Abstract e or ), at least four jets including at least one$$\mu $$ b -tagged jet, and large missing transverse momentum is presented. Data from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$$\sqrt{s}=$$ , recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC from 2015 to 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$$\text {TeV}$$ , are analysed. Vector-like partners$$^{-1}$$ T andB of the top and bottom quarks are considered, as is a vector-likeX with charge , assuming their decay into a$$+5/3$$ W ,Z , or Higgs boson and a third-generation quark. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Upper limits on the production cross-section ofT andB quark pairs as a function of their mass are derived for various decay branching ratio scenarios. The strongest lower limits on the masses are 1.59 assuming mass-degenerate vector-like quarks and branching ratios corresponding to the weak-isospin doublet model, and 1.47$$\text {TeV}$$ (1.46$$\text {TeV}$$ ) for exclusive$$\text {TeV}$$ ($$T \rightarrow Zt$$ ) decays. In addition, lower limits on the$$B/X \rightarrow Wt$$ T andB quark masses are derived for all possible branching ratios. -
A bstract Results are presented from a search for charged-lepton flavor violating (CLFV) interactions in top quark production and decay in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The events are required to contain one oppositely charged electron-muon pair in the final state, along with at least one jet identified as originating from a bottom quark. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 , collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. This analysis includes both the production (q → e μ t) and decay (t → e μ q) modes of the top quark through CLFV interactions, with q referring to a u or c quark. These interactions are parametrized using an effective field theory approach. With no significant excess over the standard model expectation, the results are interpreted in terms of vector-, scalar-, and tensor-like CLFV four-fermion effective interactions. Finally, observed exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence levels on the respective branching fractions of a top quark to an e μ pair and an up (charm) quark of 0 . 13 × 10 − 6 (1 . 31 × 10 − 6 ), 0 . 07 × 10 − 6 (0 . 89 × 10 − 6 ), and 0 . 25 × 10 − 6 (2 . 59 × 10 − 6 ) for vector, scalar, and tensor CLFV interactions, respectively.more » « less

null (Ed.)Abstract A search for direct pair production of scalar partners of the top quark (top squarks or scalar third-generation up-type leptoquarks) in the all-hadronic $$t{\bar{t}}$$ t t ¯ plus missing transverse momentum final state is presented. The analysis of 139 $$\hbox {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 of $${\sqrt{s}=13}$$ s = 13 TeV proton–proton collision data collected using the ATLAS detector at the LHC yields no significant excess over the Standard Model background expectation. To interpret the results, a supersymmetric model is used where the top squark decays via $${\tilde{t}} \rightarrow t^{(*)} {\tilde{\chi }}^0_1$$ t ~ → t ( ∗ ) χ ~ 1 0 , with $$t^{(*)}$$ t ( ∗ ) denoting an on-shell (off-shell) top quark and $${\tilde{\chi }}^0_1$$ χ ~ 1 0 the lightest neutralino. Three specific event selections are optimised for the following scenarios. In the scenario where $$m_{{\tilde{t}}}> m_t+m_{{\tilde{\chi }}^0_1}$$ m t ~ > m t + m χ ~ 1 0 , top squark masses are excluded in the range 400–1250 GeV for $${\tilde{\chi }}^0_1$$ χ ~ 1 0 masses below 200 GeV at 95% confidence level. In the situation where $$m_{{\tilde{t}}}\sim m_t+m_{{\tilde{\chi }}^0_1}$$ m t ~ ∼ m t + m χ ~ 1 0 , top squark masses in the range 300–630 GeV are excluded, while in the case where $$m_{{\tilde{t}}}< m_W+m_b+m_{{\tilde{\chi }}^0_1}$$ m t ~ < m W + m b + m χ ~ 1 0 (with $$m_{{\tilde{t}}}-m_{{\tilde{\chi }}^0_1}\ge 5$$ m t ~ - m χ ~ 1 0 ≥ 5 GeV), considered for the first time in an ATLAS all-hadronic search, top squark masses in the range 300–660 GeV are excluded. Limits are also set for scalar third-generation up-type leptoquarks, excluding leptoquarks with masses below 1240 GeV when considering only leptoquark decays into a top quark and a neutrino.more » « less

A bstract A search for pair-produced scalar and vector leptoquarks decaying into quarks and leptons of different generations is presented. It uses the full LHC Run 2 (2015–2018) data set of 139 fb
− 1collected with the ATLAS detector in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of = 13 TeV. Scalar leptoquarks with charge −(1$$ \sqrt{s} $$ / 3)e as well as scalar and vector leptoquarks with charge +(2/ 3)e are considered. All possible decays of the pair-produced leptoquarks into quarks of the third generation (t, b ) and charged or neutral leptons of the first or second generation (e, μ, ν ) with exactly one electron or muon in the final state are investigated. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Upper limits on the production cross-section are provided for eight models as a function of the leptoquark mass and the branching ratio of the leptoquark into the charged or neutral lepton. In addition, lower limits on the leptoquark masses are derived for all models across a range of branching ratios. Two of these models have the goal of providing an explanation for the recentB -anomalies. In both models, a vector leptoquark decays into charged and neutral leptons of the second generation with a similar branching fraction. Lower limits of 1980 GeV and 1710 GeV are set on the leptoquark mass for these two models. -
A bstract A search is presented for vector-like T and B quark-antiquark pairs produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Data were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018, with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . Events are separated into single-lepton, same-sign charge dilepton, and multi-lepton channels. In the analysis of the single-lepton channel a multilayer neural network and jet identification techniques are employed to select signal events, while the same-sign dilepton and multilepton channels rely on the high-energy signature of the signal to distinguish it from standard model backgrounds. The data are consistent with standard model background predictions, and the production of vector-like quark pairs is excluded at 95% confidence level for T quark masses up to 1.54 TeV and B quark masses up to 1.56 TeV, depending on the branching fractions assumed, with maximal sensitivity to decay modes that include multiple top quarks. The limits obtained in this search are the strongest limits to date for $$ \textrm{T}\overline{\textrm{T}} $$ T T ¯ production, excluding masses below 1.48 TeV for all decays to third generation quarks, and are the strongest limits to date for $$ \textrm{B}\overline{\textrm{B}} $$ B B ¯ production with B quark decays to tW.more » « less
