Title: Promising Long Term Effects of ASSISTments Online Math Homework Support
Math performance continues to be an important focus for improve- ment. Many districts adopted educational technology programs to support student learning and teacher instruction. The ASSISTments program provides feedback to students as they solve homework problems and automatically prepares reports for teachers about student performance on daily assignments. During the 2018- 19 and 2019-20 school years, we conducted a large-scale randomized controlled trial to replicate the effects of ASSISTments in 63 schools in North Carolina in the US. 32 treatment schools implemented ASSISTments in 7th-grade math class- rooms. Recently, we conducted a follow-up analysis to measure the long-term effects of ASSISTments on student performance one year after the intervention, when the students were in 8th grade. The initial results suggested that implement- ing ASSISTments in 7th grade improved students’ performance in 8th grade and minority students benefited more from the intervention.  more » « less

  3. This study used nationally representative data from the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (8th-grade Science) and the 2018 National Survey of Science and Mathematics Education toward two primary purposes: (a) to examine the association between teachers’ formal (university) content preparation in science and student outcomes in science, and (b) to document the prevalence and locality of Out-of-Field (OoF) science teaching in the US. The relationship between teachers’ formal science preparation and students’ 8th-grade science outcomes was mixed across science disciplines with a statistically significant association being observed for students’ earth science outcomes. Teachers’ experience teaching science and access to science instructional materials/kits were more strongly associated with student outcomes than was their formal content preparation, with statistically significant associations observed for all student outcomes (physical science, life science, and earth science). The prevalence of OoF science teaching was higher in middle schools than in high schools, as well as more frequently occurring in historically lower achieving and impoverished educational contexts.

  4. The ability to visualize in three-dimensions has been shown to be critical to success in engineering and in mathematics. Unfortunately of all cognitive process, spatial visualization exhibits some of the most robust gender difference, favoring males. Poorly developed spatial skills among women and girls could be a hindrance as we strive to diversify engineering. A course for developing 3D spatial skills has been implemented at the university level with promising results. A spatial skills curriculum was implemented in 7th grade mathematics at a low-performing school in rural Colorado. Student outcomes on standardized mathematics tests, including the statewide assessment and a local diagnostic test for 9th grade math placement were examined for student participants as well as for a comparison group. The students who participated in the spatial skills training in 7th grade performed better on both the statewide mathematics assessment as well as on the local placement test for 9th grade mathematics. The improvements in mathematics performance were particularly strong for the girls in the study.

Administrators, educators, and stakeholders have faced the dilemma of determining the most effective type of data for informing instruction for quite some time (Pella, 2015). While the type of standardized assessment a teacher gives during instruction is often set at the district or state level, teachers often have autonomy in the formative and summative assessments that serve as the day-to-day tools in assessing a student’s progress (Abrams et al., 2016). Choices about in-class assessment and instruction are building blocks towards a student’s success on standardized assessments. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study is to explore how 4th-8th grade math teachers’ preparation and instructional practices are influenced by the types of assessments administered to their students in one school. Research questions are as follows: (a) How do 4th-8th grade math teachers describe the math assessments they use? (b) How do 4th-8th grade math teachers adjust their instructional practices as a result of their students completing formative, summative, and standardized math assessments?
