Title: Introduction of a (Ph 3 P) 2 Pt group into the rim of an open-cage fullerene by breaking a carbon–carbon bond
Treatment of an open-cage fullerene, designated as MMK-9, with (Ph 3 P) 4 Pt in toluene solution at room temperature allows a (PPh 3 ) 2 Pt unit to be incorporated into the rim of the cage so that it becomes an integral part of the carbon cage skeleton. The structure of the adduct has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and reveals that the platinum atom has planar PtC 2 P 2 coordination, rather than the usual η 2 -bonding to an intact C–C double bond of the fullerene.  more » « less

  1. Abstract

We present candidate structures for the most stable isomers for the VSc2N@C70, VSc2N@C76, VSc2N@C78, and VSc2N@C80using a systematic procedure that involves all possible isomers of the host fullerene cages. Subsequently, a detailed investigation of structural and electronic properties of the lowest energy isomers is performed using density functional theory in combination with large polarized Gaussian basis sets. The search correctly identifies the experimentally observed VSc2N@C80isomer as the most stable structure. The structural analysis shows that only VSc2N@C70has a non‐IPR cage among the four endohedral fullerenes. Respectively, VSc2N@C70and VSc2N@C76have nearly degenerate spin states with total spinS= 0 andS= 1. All the lowest energy cages are energetically stable and show significant electron accepting capacity comparable to C60.

  2. Abstract

The discovery of borospherenes unveiled the capacity of boron to form fullerene-like cage structures. While fullerenes are known to entrap metal atoms to form endohedral metallofullerenes, few metal atoms have been observed to be part of the fullerene cages. Here we report the observation of a class of remarkable metallo-borospherenes, where metal atoms are integral parts of the cage surface. We have produced La3B18and Tb3B18and probed their structures and bonding using photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Global minimum searches revealed that the most stable structures of Ln3B18are hollow cages withD3hsymmetry. The B18-framework in the Ln3B18cages can be viewed as consisting of two triangular B6motifs connected by three B2units, forming three shared B10rings which are coordinated to the three Ln atoms on the cage surface. These metallo-borospherenes represent a new class of unusual geometry that has not been observed in chemistry heretofore.

  3. We have investigated spin related processes in fullerene C 60 devices using several experimental techniques, which include magnetic field effect of photocurrent and electroluminescence in C 60 -based diodes; spin polarized carrier injection in C 60 -based spin-valves; and pure spin current generation in NiFe/C 60 /Pt trilayer devices. We found that the ‘curvature-related spin orbit coupling’ in C 60 plays a dominant role in the obtained spin-related phenomena. The measured magneto-photocurrent and magneto-electroluminescence responses in C 60 diodes are dominated by the difference in the g -values of hole and electron polarons in the fullerene molecules. We also obtained giant magneto-resistance of ∼10% at 10 K in C 60 spin-valve devices, where spin polarized holes are injected into the C 60 interlayer. In addition, using the technique of spin-pumping in NiFe/C 60 /Pt trilayer devices with various C 60 interlayer thicknesses we determined the spin diffusion length in C 60 films to be 13 ± 2 nm at room temperature.

Abstract The nature of the actinide-actinide bonds is of fundamental importance to understand the electronic structure of the 5 f elements. It has attracted considerable theoretical attention, but little is known experimentally as the synthesis of these chemical bonds remains extremely challenging. Herein, we report a strong covalent Th-Th bond formed between two rarely accessible Th 3+ ions, stabilized inside a fullerene cage nanocontainer as Th 2 @ I h (7)-C 80 . This compound is synthesized using the arc-discharge method and fully characterized using several techniques. The single-crystal X-Ray diffraction analysis determines that the two Th atoms are separated by 3.816 Å. Both experimental and quantum-chemical results show that the two Th atoms have formal charges of +3 and confirm the presence of a strong covalent Th-Th bond inside I h (7)-C 80 . Moreover, density functional theory and ab initio multireference calculations suggest that the overlap between the 7 s /6 d hybrid thorium orbitals is so large that the bond still exists at Th-Th separations larger than 6 Å. This work demonstrates the authenticity of covalent actinide metal-metal bonds in a stable compound and deepens our fundamental understanding of f element metal bonds.

A new isolation protocol was recently reported for highly purified metallic FullertubesD5h‐C90,D3d‐C96, andD5d‐C100,which exhibit unique electronic features. Here, we report the oxygen reduction electrocatalytic behavior of C60, C70(spheroidal fullerenes), and C90, C96, and C100(tubular fullerenes) using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. C96(a metal‐free catalyst) displayed remarkable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, with an onset potential of 0.85 V and a halfway potential of 0.75 V, which are close to the state‐of‐the‐art Pt/C benchmark catalyst values. We achieved an excellent power density of 0.75 W cm−2using C96as a modified cathode in a proton‐exchange membrane fuel cell, comparable to other recently reported efficient metal‐free catalysts. Combined band structure (experimentally calculated) and free‐energy (DFT) investigations show that both favorable energy‐level alignment active catalytic sites on the carbon cage are responsible for the superior activity of C96.
