Vibration is ubiquitous as a mode of haptic communication, and is used widely in handheld devices to convey events and notifications. The miniaturization of electromechanical actuators that are used to generate these vibrations has enabled designers to embed such actuators in wearable devices, conveying vibration at the wrist and other locations on the body. However, the rigid housings of these actuators mean that such wearables cannot be fully soft and compliant at the interface with the user. Fluidic textile-based wearables offer an alternative mechanism for haptic feedback in a fabric-like form factor. To our knowledge, fluidically driven vibrotactile feedback has not been demonstrated in a wearable device without the use of valves, which can only enable low-frequency vibration cues and detract from wearability due to their rigid structure. We introduce a soft vibrotactile wearable, made of textile and elastomer, capable of rendering high-frequency vibration. We describe our design and fabrication methods and the mechanism of vibration, which is realized by controlling inlet pressure and harnessing a mechanical hysteresis. We demonstrate that the frequency and amplitude of vibration produced by our device can be varied based on changes in the input pressure, with 0.3 to 1.4 bar producing vibrations that range between 160 and 260 Hz at 13 to 38 g, the acceleration due to gravity. Our design allows for controllable vibrotactile feedback that is comparable in frequency and outperforms in amplitude relative to electromechanical actuators, yet has the compliance and conformity of fully soft wearable devices.

Mechanofluidic Instability-Driven Wearable Textile Vibrotactor
Vibration is a widely used mode of haptic communication, as vibrotactile cues provide salient haptic notifications to users and are easily integrated into wearable or handheld devices. Fluidic textile-based devices offer an appealing platform for the incorporation of vibrotactile haptic feedback, as they can be integrated into clothing and other conforming and compliant wearables. Fluidically driven vibrotactile feedback has primarily relied on valves to regulate actuating frequencies in wearable devices. The mechanical bandwidth of such valves limits the range of frequencies that can be achieved, particularly in attempting to reach the higher frequencies realized with electromechanical vibration actuators ( > 100 Hz). In this paper, we introduce a soft vibrotactile wearable device, constructed entirely of textiles and capable of rendering vibration frequencies between 183 and 233 Hz with amplitudes ranging from 23 to 114 g . We describe our methods of design and fabrication and the mechanism of vibration, which is realized by controlling inlet pressure and harnessing a mechanofluidic instability. Our design allows for controllable vibrotactile feedback that is comparable in frequency and greater in amplitude relative to state-of-the-art electromechanical actuators while offering the compliance and conformity of fully soft wearable devices.

Haptic devices typically rely on rigid actuators and bulky power supply systems, limiting wearability. Soft materials improve comfort, but careful distribution of stiffness is required to ground actuation forces and enable load transfer to the skin. We present Haptiknit, an approach in which soft, wearable, knit textiles with embedded pneumatic actuators enable programmable haptic display. By integrating pneumatic actuators within high- and low-stiffness machine-knit layers, each actuator can transmit 40 newtons in force with a bandwidth of 14.5 hertz. We demonstrate the concept with an adjustable sleeve for the forearm coupled to an untethered pneumatic control system that conveys a diverse array of social touch signals. We assessed the sleeve’s performance for discriminative and affective touch in a three-part user study and compared our results with those of prior electromagnetically actuated approaches. Haptiknit improves touch localization compared with vibrotactile stimulation and communicates social touch cues with fewer actuators than pneumatic textiles that do not invoke distributed stiffness. The Haptiknit sleeve resulted in similar recognition of social touch gestures compared to a voice-coil array but represented a more portable and comfortable form factor.more » « less

People use their hands for intricate tasks like playing musical instruments, employing myriad touch sensations to inform motor control. In contrast, current prosthetic hands lack comprehensive haptic feedback and exhibit rudimentary multitasking functionality. Limited research has explored the potential of upper limb amputees to feel, perceive, and respond to multiple channels of simultaneously activated haptic feedback to concurrently control the individual fingers of dexterous prosthetic hands. This study introduces a novel control architecture for three amputees and nine additional subjects to concurrently control individual fingers of an artificial hand using two channels of context-specific haptic feedback. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) recognize subjects’ electromyogram (EMG) patterns governing the artificial hand controller. ANNs also classify the directions objects slip across tactile sensors on the robotic fingertips, which are encoded via the vibration frequency of wearable vibrotactile actuators. Subjects implement control strategies with each finger simultaneously to prevent or permit slip as desired, achieving a 94.49% ± 8.79% overall success rate. Although no statistically significant difference exists between amputees’ and non-amputees’ success rates, amputees require more time to respond to simultaneous haptic feedback signals, suggesting a higher cognitive load. Nevertheless, amputees can accurately interpret multiple channels of nuanced haptic feedback to concurrently control individual robotic fingers, addressing the challenge of multitasking with dexterous prosthetic hands.more » « less

Wearable fingertip haptic interfaces provide tac- tile stimuli on the fingerpads by applying skin pressure, linear and rotational shear, and vibration. Designing and fabricating a compact, multi-degree-of-freedom, and forceful fingertip haptic interface is challenging due to trade-offs among miniatur- ization, multifunctionality, and manufacturability. Downsizing electromagnetic actuators that produce high torques is infea- sible, and integrating multiple actuators, links, joints, and transmission elements increases device size and weight. 3-D printing enables rapid manufacturing of complex devices with minimal assembly in large batches. However, it requires a careful arrangement of material properties, geometry, scale, and printer capabilities. Here we present a fully 3-D printed, soft, monolithic fingertip haptic device based on an origami pattern known as the “waterbomb” base that embeds foldable vacuum actuation and produces 4-DoF of motion on the fingerpad with tunable haptic forces (up to 1.3 N shear and 7 N normal) and torque (up to 25 N-mm). Including the thimble mounting, the compact device is 40 mm long and 20 mm wide. This demonstrates the efficacy of origami design and soft material 3D printing for designing and rapidly fabricating miniature yet complex wearable mechanisms with force output appropriate for haptic interaction.more » « less

null (Ed.)Soft materials and compliant actuation concepts have generated new design and control approaches in areas from robotics to wearable devices. Despite the potential of soft robotic systems, most designs currently use hard pumps, valves, and electromagnetic actuators. In this work, we take a step towards fully soft robots by developing a new compliant electromagnetic actuator architecture using gallium-indium liquid metal conductors, as well as compliant permanent magnetic and compliant iron composites. Properties of the new materials are first characterized and then co-fabricated to create an exemplary biologically-inspired soft actuator with pulsing or grasping motions, similar to Xenia soft corals. As current is applied to the liquid metal coil, the compliant permanent magnetic tips on passive silicone arms are attracted or repelled. The dynamics of the robotic actuator are characterized using stochastic system identification techniques and then operated at the resonant frequency of 7 Hz to generate high-stroke (>6 mm) motions.more » « less
