Straining the vanadium dimers along the rutile
CaF2, BaF2, and MgF2are low-index, infrared-transparent materials that are extensively used in optical systems. Despite their technological importance, a systematic investigation into the temperature dependence of their optical properties is lacking. In this study, spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to obtain the refractive index of monocrystalline CaF2, BaF2, and MgF2for wavelengths between 220 nm and 1700 nm, and for temperatures between 21 °C and 368 °C. The raw ellipsometric data was fit to a Sellmeier model with temperature-dependent oscillator terms to extract the real part of the refractive index of each material. The refractive index of CaF2and BaF2was observed to decrease linearly with increasing temperature, which can be largely attributed to a reduction in the mass density due to thermal expansion. In contrast, the refractive index of MgF2was found to vary nonlinearly with temperature, which suggests competing effects from the material’s electronic polarizability. The temperature-dependent refractive index data reported here provide a finely-resolved mapping of the thermo-optic coefficient for these three materials, which could inform the development of optical devices operating at elevated or unsteady temperatures.

Abstract c ‐axis can be used to tune the metal‐to‐insulator transition (MIT) of VO2but has thus far been limited to TiO2substrates. In this work VO2/MgF2epitaxial films are grown via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to strain engineer the transition temperature (T MIT). First, growth parameters are optimized by varying the synthesis temperature of the MgF2(001) substrate (T S) using a combination of X‐ray diffraction techniques, temperature dependent transport, and soft X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is determined thatT Svalues greater than 350 °C induce Mg and F interdiffusion and ultimately the relaxation of the VO2layer. Using the optimized growth temperature, VO2/MgF2(101) and (110) films are then synthesized. The three film orientations display MITs with transition temperatures in the range of 15–60 °C through precise strain engineering. -
Abstract Upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are promising candidates for photon‐driven reactions, including light‐triggered drug delivery, photodynamic therapy, and photocatalysis. Herein, we investigate the NIR‐to‐UV/visible emission of sub‐15 nm alkaline‐earth rare‐earth fluoride UCNPs (M1−
x Lnx F2+x ,MLnF) with a CaF2shell. We synthesize 8 alkaline‐earth host materials doped with Yb3+and Tm3+, with alkaline‐earth (M) spanning Ca, Sr, and Ba, MgSr, CaSr, CaBa, SrBa, and CaSrBa. We explore UCNP composition, size, and lanthanide doping‐dependent emission, focusing on upconversion quantum yield (UCQY) and UV emission. UCQY values of 2.46 % at 250 W cm−2are achieved with 14.5 nm SrLuF@CaF2particles, with 7.3 % of total emission in the UV. In 10.9 nm SrYbF:1 %Tm3+@CaF2particles, UV emission increased to 9.9 % with UCQY at 1.14 %. We demonstrate dye degradation under NIR illumination using SrYbF:1 %Tm3+@CaF2, highlighting the efficiency of these UCNPs and their ability to trigger photoprocesses. -

Abstract Resorbable glasses with nominal molar compositions of 20Na2O·30[(1−
x )CaO·x SrO]∙50P2O5, wherex = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1, were prepared and characterized. With the replacement of CaO by SrO, the molar volume, refractive index, and coefficient of thermal expansion increased, and the glass transition temperature, crystallization temperature, and viscosity decreased. The replacement of CaO by SrO decreased the dissolution rate in 37°C water by nearly an order of magnitude. Resorbable glass fibers drawn from melts of the 20Na2O·30CaO·50P2O5glass exhibited decreasing transmission of laser light (632 nm) in a predictable way as the fiber dissolved in a phosphate buffer solution. This demonstrated that these glasses could be used to produce resorbable fibers for temporary biosensing or therapeutic applications. -
Inorganic materials with short radiative decay time are highly desirable for fast optical sensors. This paper reports fast photoluminescence (PL) from a series of barium hexafluorosilicate (BaSiF 6 ) superlong nanowires with high aspect ratios, codoped with Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ ions, with a subnanosecond decay time. Solvothermally synthesized BaSiF 6 nanowires exhibit a uniform morphology, with an average diameter less than 40 nm and aspect ratios of over several hundreds, grown in the c -axis direction with {110} surfaces. The PL emission from the codoped BaSiF 6 nanowires, when excited by a 254 nm source, is dependent on Tb 3+ concentration, and the energy transfer from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ and to Eu 3+ ions allows efficient emissions in the visible spectra when excited by a near UV source. Annealing BaSiF 6 nanowires at 600 °C in a vacuum produced barium fluoride (BaF 2 ) nanowires composed of nanocrystals. Both BaSiF 6 and BaF 2 nanowires exhibit fast emissions in the visible spectra, with enhanced intensities compared with their codoped microparticle counterparts. The decay time of codoped BaSiF 6 nanowires is found to be shorter than that of codoped BaF 2 nanowires. The energy transfer is also observed in their cathodoluminescence spectra with high-energy irradiation.more » « less
