A bstract A measurement of the inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV is presented. The double-differential cross sections are measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum p T and the absolute jet rapidity |y| . The anti- k T clustering algorithm is used with distance parameter of 0.4 (0.7) in a phase space region with jet p T from 97 GeV up to 3.1 TeV and |y| < 2 . 0. Data collected with the CMS detector are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb − 1 (33.5 fb − 1 ). The measurement is used in a comprehensive QCD analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order, which results in significant improvement in the accuracy of the parton distributions in the proton. Simultaneously, the value of the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass is extracted as α S ( m Z ) = 0 . 1170 ± 0 . 0019. For the first time, these data are used in a standard model effective field theory analysis at next-to-leading order, where parton distributions and the QCD parameters are extracted simultaneously with imposed constraints on the Wilson coefficient c 1 of 4-quark contact interactions.

Precision studies for string derived $$Z'$$ dynamics at the LHC
Abstract We consider $$Z'$$ Z ′ s in heterotic string derived models and study $$Z'$$ Z ′ resonant production at the TeV scale at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We use various kinematic differential distributions for the Drell–Yan process at NNLO in QCD to explore the parameter space of such models and investigate $$Z'$$ Z ′ couplings. In particular, we study the impact of Z - $$Z'$$ Z ′ kinetic-mixing interactions on forward-backward asymmetry ( $$A_{FB}$$ A FB ) and other distributions at the LHC.

Abstract A search for low-mass dilepton resonances in Higgs boson decays is conducted in the four-lepton final state. The decay is assumed to proceed via a pair of beyond the standard model particles, or one such particle and a $${\mathrm{Z}}$$ Z boson. The search uses proton–proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 , at a center-of-mass energy $$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $$ s = 13 TeV . No significant deviation from the standard model expectation is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on model-independent Higgs boson decay branching fractions. Additionally, limits on dark photon and axion-like particle production, based on two specific models, are reported.more » « less

Abstract The production of Z bosons associated with jets is measured in $$\text {p}\text {p}$$ pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ s = 13 Te V with data recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with transverse momentum $$p_{\textrm{T}} > 30\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ p T > 30 Ge V is measured for different regions of the Z boson’s $$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {Z })$$ p T ( Z ) , from lower than 10 $$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ Ge V to higher than 100 $$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ Ge V . The azimuthal correlation $$\varDelta \phi $$ Δ ϕ between the Z boson and the leading jet, as well as the correlations between the two leading jets are measured in three regions of $$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {Z })$$ p T ( Z ) . The measurements are compared with several predictions at leading and next-to-leading orders, interfaced with parton showers. Predictions based on transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and corresponding parton showers give a good description of the measurement in the regions where multiple parton interactions and higher jet multiplicities are not important. The effects of multiple parton interactions are shown to be important to correctly describe the measured spectra in the low $$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {Z })$$ p T ( Z ) regions.more » « less

null (Ed.)Abstract A search for dark matter particles is performed using events with a Z boson candidate and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 $$\,\text {Te}\text {V}$$ Te , collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 . The search uses the decay channels $${\mathrm{Z}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{e}} {\mathrm{e}} $$ Z → e e and $${\mathrm{Z}} \rightarrow {{\upmu }{}{}} {{\upmu }{}{}} $$ Z → μ μ . No significant excess of events is observed over the background expected from the standard model. Limits are set on dark matter particle production in the context of simplified models with vector, axial-vector, scalar, and pseudoscalar mediators, as well as on a two-Higgs-doublet model with an additional pseudoscalar mediator. In addition, limits are provided for spin-dependent and spin-independent scattering cross sections and are compared to those from direct-detection experiments. The results are also interpreted in the context of models of invisible Higgs boson decays, unparticles, and large extra dimensions.more » « less

A bstract Measurements of the total and differential fiducial cross sections for the Z boson decaying into two neutrinos are presented at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb − 1 . In these measurements, events are selected containing an imbalance in transverse momentum and one or more energetic jets. The fiducial differential cross section is measured as a function of the Z boson transverse momentum. The results are combined with a previous measurement of charged-lepton decays of the Z boson. The measured total fiducial cross section for events with Z boson transverse momentum greater than 200 GeV is $$ {3000}_{-170}^{+180} $$ 3000 − 170 + 180 fb.more » « less
