Title: Effective Theory of Warped Compactifications and the Implications for KKLT
Abstract We argue that effective actions for warped compactifications can be subtle, with large deviations in the effective potential from naive expectations owing to constraint equations from the higher‐dimensional metric. We demonstrate this deviation in a careful computation of the effective potential for the conifold deformation parameter of the Klebanov‐Strassler solution. The uncorrected naive effective potential for the conifold was previously used to argue that the Klebanov‐Strassler background would be destabilized by antibranes placed at the conifold infrared tip unless the flux was uncomfortably large. We show this result is too strong because the formerly neglected constraint equations eliminate the features of the potential that allowed for the instability in the de Sitter uplift of the KKLT scenario.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We consider the conundrum of generating de Sitter space from higher‐dimensional geometry, with particular attention to KKLT‐type constructions[3] and their 5d implications. We show that even in the probe approximation with small, a consistent higher‐dimensional solution requires a deformation of a modulus field playing the role of a Goldberger‐Wise stabilizing field in Randall‐Sundrum type geometries that occurs through a shift in a the throat length. We identify the light radion field that sets the length of the throat, whose origin is the dynamical conifold deformation parameter. By analyzing the theory as a 5d model of mismatched branes in AdS5 space with a GW stabilization mechanism, we show how energy (and supersymmetry breaking) is transferred to both the IR and UV regions of the throat to generate a consistent 4d de Sitter sliced geometry. This should help resolve some of the recent apparent paradoxes in explicit higher‐dimensional constructions. Moreover, the radion gives insight into the potential for the previously identified “conifold instability”. We argue that this instability would be a destabilization of the potential for the radion in KKLT, which can occur when the perturbation is too large. If indeedis too small, the radion would enter on its runaway direction and the conifold deformation would shrink to zero size. It is difficult to satisfy the required bound and a) maintain a hierarchy in the simpler CY manifolds and b) complete the cosmological phase transition into the stabilized throat, We also discuss the implications of this type of setup for supersymmetry breaking, and how multiple throats can introduce hierarchies of supersymmetry breaking masses, even in an anomaly‐mediated scenario. In an appendix we consider general compactification constraints.

  2. In this note, we prove that minimizers of convex functionals with a convexity constraint and a general class of Lagrangians can be approximated by solutions to fourth-order Abreu-type equations. Our result generalizes that of Le (Twisted Harnack inequality and approximation of variational problems with a convexity constraint by singular Abreu equations.Adv. Math.434(2023)) where the case of quadratically growing Lagrangians was treated.

  3. Geometric transitions between Calabi-Yau manifolds have proven to be a powerful tool in exploring the intricate and interconnected vacuum structure of string compactifications. However, their role in N=1, four-dimensional string compactifications remains relatively unexplored. In this work we present a novel proposal for transitioning the background geometry (including NS5-branes and holomorphic, slope-stable vector bundles) of four-dimensional, N=1 heterotic string compactifications through a conifold transition connecting Calabi-Yau threefolds. Our proposal is geometric in nature but informed by the heterotic effective theory. Central to this study is a description of how the cotangent bundles of the deformation and resolution manifolds in the conifold can be connected by an apparent small instanton transition with a 5-brane wrapping the small resolution curves. We show that by a “pair creation” process 5-branes can be generated simultaneously in the gauge and gravitational sectors and used to describe a coupled minimal change in the manifold and gauge sector. This observation leads us to propose dualities for 5-branes and gauge bundles in heterotic conifolds which we then confirm at the level of spectrum in large classes of examples. While the 5-brane duality is novel, we observe that the bundle correspondence has appeared before in the target space duality exhibited by (0, 2) gauged linear sigma models. Thus our work provides a geometric explanation of (0, 2) target space duality.

  4. Abstract Kinematic simulation of planar n-bar mechanisms has been an intense topic of study for several decades now. However, a large majority of efforts have focused on position analysis of such mechanisms with limited links and joint types. This article presents a novel, unified approach to the analysis of geometric constraints of planar n-bar mechanisms with revolute joint (R-joint), prismatic joint (P-joint), and rolling joint. This work is motivated by a need to create and program a system of constraint equations that deal with different types of joints in a unified way. A key feature of this work is that the rolling joint constraints are represented by four-point models, which enables us to use the well-established undirected graph rigidity analysis algorithms. As a result, mechanisms with an arbitrary combination of revolute-, prismatic joints, and wheel/gear/wheel-belt chains without any limitations on their actuation scheme can be analyzed and simulated efficiently for potential implementation in interactive computer software and large-scale data generation.

  5. Abstract LetXbe a compact, Kähler, Calabi‐Yau threefold and suppose , for , is a conifold transition obtained by contracting finitely many disjoint curves inXand then smoothing the resulting ordinary double point singularities. We show that, for sufficiently small, the tangent bundle admits a Hermitian‐Yang‐Mills metric with respect to the conformally balanced metrics constructed by Fu‐Li‐Yau. Furthermore, we describe the behavior of near the vanishing cycles of as .
