Abstract Sterilization of skin prior to surgery is challenged by the reservoir of bacteria that resides in hair follicles. Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) have been proposed as a method to treat and deactivate these bacteria as atmospheric plasmas are able to penetrate into structures and crevices with dimensions similar to those found in hair follicles. In this paper, we discuss results from a computational investigation of an APPJ sustained in helium flowing into ambient air, and incident onto a layered dielectric similar to human skin in which there are idealized hair follicles. We found that, depending on the location of the follicle, the bulk ionization wave (IW) incident onto the skin, or the surface IW on the skin, are able to launch IWs into the follicle. The uniformity of treatment of the follicle depends on the location of thefirst entryof the plasma into the follicle on the top of the skin. Typically, only one side of the follicle is treated on for a given plasma pulse, with uniform treatment resulting from rastering the plasma jet across the follicle over many pulses. Plasma treatment of the follicle is sensitive to the angle of the follicle with respect to the skin, width of the follicle pocket, conductivity of the dermis and thickness of the underlying subcutaneous fat layer, the latter due to the change in capacitance of the tissue.

What Can a Robot’s Skin Be? Designing Texture-changing Skin for Human–Robot Social Interaction
Biological skin has numerous functions like protection, sensing, expression, and regulation. On the contrary, a robot’s skin is usually regarded as a passive and static separation between the body and environment. In this article, we explore the design opportunities of a robot’s skin as a socially expressive medium. Inspired by living organisms, we discuss the roles of interactive robotic skin from four perspectives: expression, perception, regulation, and mechanical action. We focus on the expressive function of skin to sketch design concepts and present a flexible technical method for embodiment. The proposed method integrates pneumatically actuated dynamic textures on soft skin, with forms and kinematic patterns generating a variety of visual and haptic expressions. We demonstrate the proposed design space with six texture-changing skin prototypes and discuss their expressive capacities.

Bioelectronic devices and components made from soft, polymer-based and hybrid electronic materials form natural interfaces with the human body. Advances in the molecular design of stretchable dielectric, conducting and semiconducting polymers, as well as their composites with various metallic and inorganic nanoscale or microscale materials, have led to more unobtrusive and conformal interfaces with tissues and organs. Nonetheless, technical challenges associated with functional performance, stability and reliability of integrated soft bioelectronic systems still remain. This Review discusses recent progress in biomedical applications of soft organic and hybrid electronic materials, device components and integrated systems for addressing these challenges. We first discuss strategies for achieving soft and stretchable devices, highlighting molecular and materials design concepts for incorporating intrinsically stretchable functional materials. We next describe design strategies and considerations on wearable devices for on-skin sensing and prostheses. Moving beneath the skin, we discuss advances in implantable devices enabled by materials and integrated devices with tissue-like mechanical properties. Finally, we summarize strategies used to build standalone integrated systems and whole-body networks to integrate wearable and implantable bioelectronic devices with other essential components, including wireless communication units, power sources, interconnects and encapsulation.more » « less

The investigation of gene regulation therapeutics for the treatment of skin‐related diseases is rarely explored in part due to inefficient systemic delivery. In this study, a bottlebrush polymer‐antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) conjugate, termed pacDNA, designed to target IL‐17 receptor A (IL‐17RA), which is involved in psoriasis pathogenesis is presented. Systemic administration of pacDNA led to its accumulation in epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis of mouse skin, reduced IL‐17RA gene expression in skin, and significantly reversed the development of imiquimod (IMQ)‐induced psoriasis in a mouse model. These findings highlight the potential of the pacDNA as a promising nanoconstruct for systemic oligonucleotide delivery to the skin and for treating psoriasis and other skin‐related disorders through systemic administration.more » « less

This study explored the feasibility of using fish skin bandages as a therapeutic option for third-degree skin burns. Following the California wildfires, clinical observations of animals with third-degree skin burns demonstrated increased comfort levels and reduced pain when treated with tilapia fish skin. Despite the promises of this therapy, there are few studies explaining the healing mechanisms behind the application of tilapia fish skin. In this study, mice with third-degree burns were treated with either a hydrocolloid adhesive bandage (control) (n = 16) or fish skin (n = 16) 7 days post-burn. Mice were subjected to histologic, hematologic, molecular, and gross evaluation at days 7, 16, and 28 post-burn. The fish skin offered no benefit to overall wound closure compared to hydrocolloids. Additionally, we detected no difference between fish skin and control treatments in regard to hypermetabolism or hematologic values. However, the fish skin groups exhibited 2 times more vascularization and 2 times higher expression of antimicrobial defensin peptide in comparison to controls. Proteomic analysis of the fish skin revealed the presence of antimicrobial peptides. Collectively, these data suggest that fish skin can serve as an innovative and cost-effective therapeutic alternative for burn victims to facilitate vascularization and reduce bacterial infection.more » « less

To investigate the well-observed racial disparities in computer vision systems that analyze images of humans, researchers have turned to skin tone as a more objective annotation than race metadata for fairness performance evaluations. However, the current state of skin tone annotation procedures is highly varied. For instance, researchers use a range of untested scales and skin tone categories, have unclear annotation procedures, and provide inadequate analyses of uncertainty. In addition, little attention is paid to the positionality of the humans involved in the annotation process—both designers and annotators alike—and the historical and sociological context of skin tone in the United States. Our work is the first to investigate the skin tone annotation process as a sociotechnical project. We surveyed recent skin tone annotation procedures and conducted annotation experiments to examine how subjective understandings of skin tone are embedded in skin tone annotation procedures. Our systematic literature review revealed the uninterrogated association between skin tone and race and the limited effort to analyze annotator uncertainty in current procedures for skin tone annotation in computer vision evaluation. Our experiments demonstrated that design decisions in the annotation procedure such as the order in which the skin tone scale is presented or additional context in the image (i.e., presence of a face) significantly affected the resulting inter-annotator agreement and individual uncertainty of skin tone annotations. We call for greater reflexivity in the design, analysis, and documentation of procedures for evaluation using skin tone.more » « less
