Vanuatubasis Ober & Staniczek, 2009 is an endemic genus of damselfly found on the island archipelago of Vanuatu. Previously only three species were assigned to the genus. Here, all known species ofVanuatubasis are formally described and treated, including the association of females for known species. The following new congeners are also described:V. discontinua sp. nov. ,V. evelynae sp. nov. ,V. insularivorum sp. nov. ,V. kapularum sp. nov. ,V. nunggoli sp. nov. ,V. rhomboides sp. nov. , andV. xanthochroa sp. nov. from material collected across six different islands. An illustrated key to both males and females of all species withinVanuatubasis is provided as well as distributions for all known species. -
Abstract Four species of the genus
Wrangelia are presently known from the western Atlantic Ocean:W. argus ,W. bicuspidata ,W. penicillata, andW. gordoniae , with the first three historically being reported from Bermuda. Morphological and molecular barcode (COI‐5P) and phylogenetic analyses used in this study (SSU, LSU,rbc L) indicated eight species groupings ofWrangelia in Bermuda, excluding two of the historically recognized species, retaining onlyW. argus while adding seven new species, of which six are formally described. What had been historically reported asW. penicillata from Bermuda was shown to be distinct from Mediterranean Sea specimens (type locality) and was shown to be a mixture ofW. hesperia sp. nov. andW. incrassata sp. nov. Along with these two, three other new species (W. laxa sp. nov.,W. ryancraigii sp. nov., andW. secundiramea sp. nov.) have complete rhizoidal cortication tightly covering axial cells of indeterminate axes below the apices, distinguishing them from the two local incompletely corticated congenersW. argus andW. abscondita sp. nov., the latter a morphologically cryptic sister species withW. bicuspidata from the Caribbean Sea. Only one of the new species,W. ryancraigii , has thus far been observed in the mesophotic zone off the Bermuda platform, and it is morphologically cryptic with the euphotic zone'sW. laxa . -
Messor is a diverse genus of Myrmicinae with 168 extant species and subspecies. In the Mediterranean, some of its taxa historically were classified as members of theMessor instabilis group (sensu Santschi), of which 19 are known from the eastern Mediterranean. Here, theMessor semirufus complex of the Balkan Peninsula that assembles a distinct subsection of members of theinstabilis group is defined and treated. In total, five species are recorded, including three that are new.Messor atanassovii Atanassov, 1982 is redescribed and confirmed for Bulgaria (Thracian Plain, Struma, and Mesta Valley, Pirin Mt., and Eastern Rhodopi) and Greece (Epirus, Ionian Islands, Central and Eastern Macedonia, and Thraki). Three species are described as new to science:Messor danaes Salata, Georgiadis & Borowiec,sp. nov. (Cyclades: Serifos),Messor kardamenae Salata & Borowiec,sp. nov. (Dodecanese: Kos, Nisyros, Rhodes, and Tilos), andMessor veneris Salata, Georgiadis & Borowiec,sp. nov. (Cyclades: Milos). The fifth member of the complex,Messor creticus Borowiec & Salata, 2019, maintains its status of Cretan endemic. -
Molecular systematic studies of the anthozoan class Octocorallia have revealed widespread incongruence between phylogenetic relationships and taxonomic classification at all levels of the Linnean hierarchy. Among the soft coral taxa in order Malacalcyonacea, the family Alcyoniidae and its type genus
Alcyonium have both been recognised to be highly polyphyletic. A recent family-level revision of Octocorallia established a number of new families for genera formerly considered to belong to Alcyoniidae, but revision ofAlcyonium is not yet complete. Previous molecular studies have supported the placement ofAlcyonium verseveldti (Benayahu, 1982) in family Cladiellidae rather than Alcyoniidae, phylogenetically distinct from the other three genera in that family. Here we describe a new genus,Ofwegenum gen. nov. to accommodateO. verseveldti comb. nov. and three new species of that genus,O. coronalucis sp. nov. ,O. kloogi sp. nov. , andO. colli sp. nov. , bringing the total number of species in this genus to four.Ofwegenum gen. nov. is a rarely encountered genus so far known from only a few locations spanning the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. We present the morphological characters of each species and use molecular data from both DNA barcoding and target-enrichment of conserved elements to explore species boundaries and phylogenetic relationships within the genus. -
Species of the genus
Lathrobium Gravenhorst (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Paederinae) from North America north of Mexico are reviewed and 41 species are recognized. Morphology and mitochondrial COI sequence data were used to guide species designations in three flightless lineages endemic to the southern Appalachian Mountains, a biologically diverse region known for cryptic diversity. Using a combination of phylogeny, algorithm-based species delimitation analyses, and genitalic morphology, five new cryptic species are described and possible biogeographic scenarios for their speciation hypothesized:L. balsamense Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. ,L. camplyacra Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. ,L. islae Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. ,L. lividum Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. ,L. smokiense Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. Five additional species are described:L. absconditum Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. ,L. hardeni Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. ,L. lapidum Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. ,L. solum Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. , andL. thompsonorum Haberski & Caterino,sp. nov. Two species are transferred fromLathrobium toPseudolathra Casey:Pseudolathra parcum (LeConte, 1880),comb. nov. andPseudolathra texana (Casey, 1905),comb. nov. Twenty-six names are reduced to synonymy. Lectotypes are designated for 47 species. Larvae are described where known, and characters of possible diagnostic value are summarized. Species diagnoses, distributions, illustrations of male and female genitalia, and a key toLathrobium species known from the Nearctic region (including several introduced species) are provided.
