Title: Vanishing RKKY interactions in Ce-based cage compounds
Abstract We report the results of thermodynamic measurements in external magnetic field of the cubic Ce-based cage compounds CeT2Cd20(T= Ni,Pd). Our analysis of the heat-capacity data shows that the Γ7doublet is the ground state multiplet of the Ce3+ions. Consequently, for the Γ7doublet it can be theoretically shown that the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interaction between the localized Ce moments mediated by the conduction electrons, must vanish at temperatures much lower than the energy separating the ground state doublet from the first excited Γ8quartet. Our findings provide an insight as to why no long range order has been observed in these compounds down to temperatures in the milliKelvin range.  more » « less

  1. Abstract In this report, a facile wet chemical method using acetonitrile combined with thermal annealing was used to prepare Li2S‐P2S5(LPS) based glass‐ceramic electrolytes with (1 wt%, 3 wt%, and 5 wt% Ce2S3) and without Ce2S3doping. The crystal structure, ionic conductivity, and chemical stability of Li7P3S11glass‐ceramic electrolytes were examined at varying temperatures (250–350°C). The results indicated that the highest ionic conductivity of 3.15 × 10−4S cm−1for pure Li7P3S11was observed at a temperature of 325°C. By incorporating 1 wt% Ce2S3and subjecting it to a heat treatment at 250°C, the glass ceramic electrolyte attained a remarkable ionic conductivity of 7.7 × 10−4(S cm−1) at 25°C. Furthermore, it exhibited a stable and extensive electrochemical potential range, reaching up to 5 volts when compared to the Li/Li+reference electrode. By tuning the glass transition and crystallization temperature, cerium doping seems to make Li7P3S11more chemically stable, compared to its original 70Li2S‐30P2S5counterpart. According to Raman and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses, cerium doping inhibits the decomposition of highly conductive P2S74‐(pyro‐thiophosphate) to PS43−and P2S64−. Doped LPS has a greater crystallinity and more uniform microstructure than pure LPS, according to XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy analysis. Consequently, Li7P2.9Ce0.1S11electrolyte shows great potential as a solid‐state electrolyte for constructing high‐performance sulfide‐based all‐solid‐state batteries.

  2. Context.Ever since they were first detected in the interstellar medium, the radio wavelength (3.3 GHz) hyperfine-structure splitting transitions in the rotational ground state of CH were observed to show anomalous excitation. Astonishingly, this behaviour was uniformly observed towards a variety of different sources probing a wide range of physical conditions. While the observed level inversion could be explained globally by a pumping scheme involving collisions, a description of the extent of ‘over-excitation’ observed in individual sources required the inclusion of radiative processes, involving transitions at higher rotational levels. Therefore, a complete description of the excitation mechanism in the CH ground state, observed towards individual sources entails observational constraints from the rotationally excited levels of CH and in particular that of its first rotationally excited state (2Π3/2,N= 1,J= 3/2). Aims.Given the limited detections of these lines, the objective of this work is to characterise the physical and excitation properties of the rotationally excited lines of CH between the Λ-doublet levels of its2Π3/2,N= 1,J= 3/2 state near 700 MHz, and investigate their influence on the pumping mechanisms of the ground-state lines of CH. Methods. This work presents the first interferometric search for the rotationally excited lines of CH between the Λ-doublet levels of its2Π3/2,N= 1,J= 3/2 state near 700 MHz carried out using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) array towards six star-forming regions, W51 E, Sgr B2 (M), M8, M17, W43, and DR21 Main. Results. We detected the two main hyperfine structure lines within the first rotationally excited state of CH, in absorption towards W51 E. To jointly model the physical and excitation conditions traced by lines from both the ground and first rotationally excited states of CH, we performed non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) radiative transfer calculations using the code MOLPOP-CEP. These models account for the effects of line overlap and are aided by column density constraints from the far-infrared (FIR) wavelength rotational transitions of CH that connect to the ground state and use collisional rate coefficients for collisions of CH with H, H2and electrons (the latter was computed in this work using cross-sections estimated within the Born approximation). Conclusions. The non-LTE analysis revealed that physical properties typical of diffuse and translucent clouds best reproduced the higher rates of level inversion seen in the ground-state lines at 3.3 GHz, observed at velocities near 66 km s−1along the sightline towards W51 E. In contrast, the excited lines near 700 MHz were only excited in much denser environments withnH~ 105cm−3towards which the anomalous excitation in two of the three ground state lines is quenched, but not in the 3.264 GHz line. This is in alignment with our observations and suggests that while FIR pumping and line overlap effects are essential for exciting and producing line inversion in the ground state, excitation to the first rotational level is dominated by collisional excitation from the ground state. For the rotationally excited state of CH, the models indicated low excitation temperatures and column densities of 2 × 1014cm−2. Furthermore, modelling these lines helps us understand the complexities of the spectral features observed in the 532/536 GHz rotational transitions of CH. These transitions, connecting sub-levels of the first rotationally excited state to the ground state, play a crucial role in trapping FIR radiation and enhancing the degree of inversion seen in the ground state lines. Based on the physical conditions constrained, we predict the potential of detecting hyperfine-splitting transitions arising from higher rotationally excited transitions of CH in the context of their current non-detections.

  3. Abstract Integrated optomechanical systems are a leading platform for manipulating, sensing, and distributing quantum information, but are limited by residual optical heating. Here, we demonstrate a two-dimensional optomechanical crystal (OMC) geometry with increased thermal anchoring and a mechanical mode at 7.4 GHz, well aligned with the operation range of cryogenic microwave hardware and piezoelectric transducers. The eight times better thermalization than current one-dimensional OMCs, large optomechanical coupling rates,g0/2π  ≈  880 kHz, and high optical quality factors,Qopt = 2.4 × 105, allow ground-state cooling (nm = 0.32) of the acoustic mode from 3 K and entering the optomechanical strong-coupling regime. In pulsed sideband asymmetry measurements, we show ground-state operation (nm < 0.45) at temperatures below 10 mK, with repetition rates up to 3 MHz, generating photon-phonon pairs at  ≈ 147 kHz. Our results extend optomechanical system capabilities and establish a robust foundation for future microwave-to-optical transducers with entanglement rates exceeding state-of-the-art superconducting qubit decoherence rates.

  4. Abstract Li+and Bi3+(at 1:1 ratio) substitution of Pb2+in the model compound PbZrO3is investigated. It is found that [Pb1−x(Li1/2Bi1/2)x]ZrO3ceramics remain phase pure of orthorhombic perovskite atx = 0.05, are almost phase pure atx = 0.10 and 0.15, and contain minor amounts of impurity phases atx = 0.20. The substitution allows the ceramics to be sintered to a high density at reduced temperatures, and at the same time, significantly enhances the dielectric breakdown strength. At 160°C when reversible antiferroelectric (AFE)–ferroelectric (FE) phase transitions are observed in all compositions, the chemical substitution is shown to reduce the electric hysteresis, increase the energy storage density, and improve the energy efficiency. The results will help design future high‐performance ceramics for energy storage capacitors. It is further observed that the (Li1/2Bi1/2) substitution of Pb in PbZrO3weakly impacts the dielectric behavior of the ceramics: The temperature at dielectric maximum,Tm, varies within a narrow range of 232.4–237.6°C; the relaxation parameter in the paraelectric phase,γ, stays close to unity and barely changes; and the diffuseness parameter of the phase transition atTm,d, remains low. Defect dipoles of preferably along 〈1 1 0〉 directions are proposed to explain the un‐disrupted long‐range AFE order in the [Pb1−x(Li1/2Bi1/2)x]ZrO3ceramics.

  5. Abstract Diboson production in association with jets is studied in the fully leptonic final states, pp → (Z/γ*)(Z/γ*) + jets → 2ℓ2ℓ′ + jets, (ℓ,ℓ′ = e orμ) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Differential distributions and normalized differential cross sections are measured as a function of jet multiplicity, transverse momentumpT, pseudorapidityη, invariant mass and ∆ηof the highest-pTand second-highest-pTjets, and as a function of invariant mass of the four-lepton system for events with various jet multiplicities. These differential cross sections are compared with theoretical predictions that mostly agree with the experimental data. However, in a few regions we observe discrepancies between the predicted and measured values. Further improvement of the predictions is required to describe the ZZ+jets production in the whole phase space.
