Ridesourcing advocates and companies promise many benefits to cities, such as increased accessibility, a solution to the last-mile transit problem, and even reduced need for automobiles. However, an important body of research has indicated that ridesourcing is more heavily used by more privileged consumers and in more affluent and whiter neighborhoods. Questions have also emerged about the effects of ridesourcing on public transportation. This study builds on a mobility disparities perspective by analyzing ridesourcing in the context of urban inequality, including gentrification and displacement. Using a large data set from the Chicago area, this study shows that ridesourcing is associated with areas that have seen rising rents and have become whiter and more educated. The results also show that ridesourcing is more prevalent in areas that are accessible by public transportation. Although the causal relationship between ridesourcing and gentrification is complex, the study suggests a new direction in the literature that embeds the analysis of ridesourcing in the broader frameworks of unequal urban development and neoliberalization. The study also suggests policy approaches that could help to reduce some of the connections between ridesourcing and urban inequity.

What Are the Relationships between Public Transit and Gentrification Progress? An Empirical Study in the New York–Northern New Jersey–Long Island Areas
Transit-oriented development has been a widely accepted tool among transportation planning practitioners; however, there are concerns about the risk of increasing residential property values leading to gentrification or displacements. Therefore, it is critical to provide precise investigations of the relationships between public transit and gentrification. Although numerous studies have explored this topic, few have discussed these relationships based on detailed measurements of gentrification from a regional perspective. This study aims to fill the research gap by measuring the gentrification subcategories through a hierarchical definition based on data in the New York–Northern New Jersey–Long Island areas and applying the transit desert concept as the measurement of transit services. Through multinomial logistic regression and machine-learning approaches, findings indicate that the rate of transit deserts in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods is higher than the others. In addition, the impacts of transit services are significant in gentrification but insignificant in super-gentrification. These findings can advance the knowledge of the role of the transit service in different gentrification progresses. Based on these findings, policymakers need to be careful when allocating public transit budgets and note the effects of these investments on neighborhoods with different socioeconomic statuses.

Public transit systems are crucial to mobility and access in cities throughout the world. This article addresses the importance of these transit systems in San Antonio, Texas. We show how transit systems exacerbate race and class inequality and the accessibility of city spaces with a focus on San Antonio’s buses. Using mixed methods (surveys, interviews, ethnography, and document analysis) we illustrate that poor and working-class Latinx communities experience reduced access to resource rich areas of the city when they are dependent upon the city’s public transportation. To better describe this experience we use the concepts, enclaves of exclusion and enclaves of inaccessibility. Our findings show that mobility through San Antonio for poor and working class Latinxs is limited especially for people in these communities who rely on public transit. This experience with these public transit systems often renders them as individuals who do not belong in certain neighborhoods, and ultimately reinforces the longstanding histories of race and class segregation in San Antonio.more » « less

This article tests the hypothesis that low-income residents disproportionately move out of neighbourhoods in close proximity to new rail transit stations. This transit-induced gentrification scenario posits that the development of rail transit will place an upward pressure on land and housing values and that higher-income residents will outbid low-income residents for this new amenity. The most transit-dependent population may therefore be displaced from the most accessible locations, forming a paradox in the investment in new transit systems. We test this hypothesis using the Panel Study on Income Dynamics (PSID) dataset to trace the out-migration of residents across the United States from census tracts within five years of the opening of a new station, between 1970 and 2014. We find that low-income individuals are more likely to move, regardless of their neighbourhood. However, we do not find significant evidence that low-income individuals are more likely to move out of transit neighbourhoods, after controlling for both individual and other neighbourhood characteristics. The odds of moving out of a transit neighbourhood for low-income residents is statistically insignificant. In other words, they do not have a heightened probability of leaving new transit neighbourhoods compared with other residents. Our results are robust across decades, when examining renters alone, for different time spans and for varying definitions of transit neighbourhoods. We further find that those living in transit neighbourhoods are not more likely to live in a crowded dwelling. Our results therefore suggest that, on average, across the nation, low-income residents do not disproportionately exit new transit neighbourhoods.more » « less

This paper analyzes the geography of super-gentrification in US cities, the further intensification of class upgrading after a neighborhood has already been gentrified. Building a national longitudinal tract database of gentrification intensity indicators, we analyze where this process has occurred across the 45 most populous metropolitan regions. We develop a method for quantifying metro-specific gentrification indices, then compare the class and racial demographics of super-gentrified tracts against other kinds of affluent places. We also interpret these national patterns with a case study of gentrification’s broader geographies in the New York City metropolitan region. While super-gentrification is most commonly researched in global mega-cities, we found a wider geography, including substantial suburban and smaller city patterns. We also found that supergentrified neighborhoods are less racially diverse than other gentrified neighborhoods, and are more demographically similar to historically affluent (but not recently gentrified) neighborhoods. The study contributes to a national comparative analysis of gentrification intensity patterns, and a longitudinal analysis of what happens after a neighborhood has already been gentrified.more » « less
