Title: Time‐Temperature‐Transformation (TTT) Diagram of Battery‐Grade Li‐Garnet Electrolytes for Low‐Temperature Sustainable Synthesis
Abstract

Efficient and affordable synthesis of Li+functional ceramics is crucial for the scalable production of solid electrolytes for batteries. Li‐garnet Li7La3Zr2O12−d(LLZO), especially its cubic phase (cLLZO), attracts attention due to its high Li+conductivity and wide electrochemical stability window. However, high sintering temperatures raise concerns about the cathode interface stability, production costs, and energy consumption for scalable manufacture. We show an alternative “sinter‐free” route to stabilize cLLZO as films at half of its sinter temperature. Specifically, we establish a time‐temperature‐transformation (TTT) diagram which captures the amorphous‐to‐crystalline LLZO transformation based on crystallization enthalpy analysis and confirm stabilization of thin‐film cLLZO at record low temperatures of 500 °C. Our findings pave the way for low‐temperature processing via TTT diagrams, which can be used for battery cell design targeting reduced carbon footprints in manufacturing.

  2. Abstract

Polymer–ceramic composite electrolytes are emerging as a promising solution to deliver high ionic conductivity, optimal mechanical properties, and good safety for developing high‐performance all‐solid‐state rechargeable batteries. Composite electrolytes have been prepared with cubic‐phase Li7La3Zr2O12(LLZO) garnet and polyethylene oxide (PEO) and employed in symmetric lithium battery cells. By combining selective isotope labeling and high‐resolution solid‐state Li NMR, we are able to track Li ion pathways within LLZO‐PEO composite electrolytes by monitoring the replacement of7Li in the composite electrolyte by6Li from the6Li metal electrodes during battery cycling. We have provided the first experimental evidence to show that Li ions favor the pathway through the LLZO ceramic phase instead of the PEO‐LLZO interface or PEO. This approach can be widely applied to study ion pathways in ionic conductors and to provide useful insights for developing composite materials for energy storage and harvesting.

  3. Abstract

Highly disordered amorphous Li7La3Zr2O12(aLLZO) is a promising class of electrolyte separators and protective layers for hybrid or all‐solid‐state batteries due to its grain‐boundary‐free nature and wide electrochemical stability window. Unlike low‐entropy ionic glasses such as LixPOyNz(LiPON), these medium‐entropy non‐Zachariasen aLLZO phases offer a higher number of stable structure arrangements over a wide range of tunable synthesis temperatures, providing the potential to tune the LBU‐Li+transport relation. It is revealed that lanthanum is the active “network modifier” for this new class of highly disordered Li+conductors, whereas zirconium and lithium serve as “network formers”. Specifically, within the solubility limit of La in aLLZO, increasing the La concentration can result in longer bond distances between the first nearest neighbors of Zr─O and La─O within the same local building unit (LBU) and the second nearest neighbors of Zr─La across two adjacent network‐former and network‐modifier LBUs, suggesting a more disordered medium‐ and long‐range order structure in LLZO. These findings open new avenues for future designs of amorphous Li+electrolytes and the selection of network‐modifier dopants. Moreover, the wide yet relatively low synthesis temperatures of these glass‐ceramics make them attractive candidates for low‐cost and more sustainable hybrid‐ or all‐solid‐state batteries for energy storage.

  4. Abstract

Garnet‐type Li7La3Zr2O12(LLZO) solid‐state electrolytes hold great promise for the next‐generation all‐solid‐state batteries. An in‐depth understanding of the phase transformation during synthetic processes is required for better control of the crystallinity and improvement of the ionic conductivity of LLZO. Herein, the phase transformation pathways and the associated surface amorphization are comparatively investigated during the sol–gel and solid‐state syntheses of LLZO using in situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The combined ex situ X‐ray diffraction and in situ TEM techniques are used to reveal two distinct phase transformation pathways (precursors → La2Zr2O7 → LLZO and precursors → LLZO) and the subsequent layer‐by‐layer crystal growth of LLZO on the atomic scale. It is also demonstrated that the surface amorphization surrounding the LLZO crystals is sensitive to the postsynthesis cooling rate and significantly affects the ionic conductivity of pelletized LLZO. This work brings up a critical but often overlooked issue that may greatly exacerbate the Li‐ion conductivity by undesired synthetic conditions, which can be leveraged to ameliorate the overall crystallinity to improve the electrochemical performance of LLZO. These findings also shed light on the significance of optimizing surface structure to ensure superior performance of Li‐ion conductors.

  5. Abstract

Li2MnO3has been contemplated as a high‐capacity cathode candidate for Li‐ion batteries; however, it evolves oxygen during battery charging under ambient conditions, which hinders a reversible reaction. However, it is unclear if this irreversible process still holds under subambient conditions. Here, the low‐temperature electrochemical properties of Li2MnO3in an aqueous LiCl electrolyte are evaluated and a reversible discharge capacity of 302 mAh g−1at a potential of 1.0 V versus Ag/AgCl at −78 °C with good rate capability and stable cycling performance, in sharp contrast to the findings in a typical Li2MnO3cell cycled at room temperature, is observed. However, the results reveal that the capacity does not originate from the reversible oxygen oxidation in Li2MnO3but the reversible Cl2(l)/Cl(aq.) redox from the electrolyte. The results demonstrate the good catalytic properties of Li2MnO3to promote the Cl2/Clredox at low temperatures.
