Abstract Cocrystallizations of diboronic acids [1,3‐benzenediboronic acid (1,3‐bdba), 1,4‐benzenediboronic acid (1,4‐bdba) and 4,4’‐biphenyldiboronic acid (4,4’‐bphdba)] and bipyridines [1,2‐bis(4‐pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) and 1,2‐bis(4‐pyridyl)ethane (bpeta)] generated the hydrogen‐bonded 1 : 2 cocrystals [(1,4‐bdba)(bpe)2] (1), [(1,4‐bdba)(bpeta)2] (2), [(1,3‐bdba)(bpe)2(H2O)2] (3) and [(1,3‐bdba)(bpeta)2(H2O)] (4), wherein 1,3‐bdba involved hydrated assemblies. The linear extended 4,4’‐bphdba exhibited the formation of 1 : 1 cocrystals [(4,4'‐bphdba)(bpe)] (5) and [(4,4'‐bphdba‐me)(bpeta)] (6). For 6, a hemiester was generated by an in‐situ linker transformation. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction revealed all structures to be sustained by B(O)−H⋅⋅⋅N, B(O)−H⋅⋅⋅O, Ow−H⋅⋅⋅O, Ow−H⋅⋅⋅N, C−H⋅⋅⋅O, C−H⋅⋅⋅N, π⋅⋅⋅π, and C−H⋅⋅⋅π interactions. The cocrystals comprise 1D, 2D, and 3D hydrogen‐bonded frameworks with components that display reactivities upon cocrystal formation and within the solids. In 1 and 3, the C=C bonds of the bpe molecules undergo a [2+2] photodimerization. UV radiation of each compound resulted in quantitative conversion of bpe into cyclobutane tpcb. The reactivity involving 1 occurred via 1D‐to‐2D single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal (SCSC) transformation. Our work supports the feasibility of the diboronic acids as formidable structural and reactivity building blocks for cocrystal construction.

In the title compound, C10H8N2·2C6H5NO3, 4-nitrophenol and 4,4′-bipyridine crystallized together in a 2:1 ratio in the space groupP21/n. There is a hydrogen-bonding interaction between the nitrogen atoms on the 4,4′-bipyridine molecule and the hydrogen atom on the hydroxyl group on the 4-nitrophenol, resulting in trimolecular units. This structure is a polymorph of a previously reported structure [Nayak & Pedireddi (2016).Cryst. Growth Des.16, 5966–5975], which differs mainly due to a twist in the 4,4′-bipyridine molecule.more » « less

Abstract Thesynandantiisomers of [FeIV(O)(TMC)]2+(TMC=tetramethylcyclam) represent the first isolated pair of synthetic non‐heme oxoiron(IV) complexes with identical ligand topology, differing only in the position of the oxo unit bound to the iron center. Both isomers have previously been characterized. Reported here is that thesynisomer [FeIV(Osyn)(TMC)(NCMe)]2+(2) converts into itsantiform [FeIV(Oanti)(TMC)(NCMe)]2+(1) in MeCN, an isomerization facilitated by water and monitored most readily by1H NMR and Raman spectroscopy. Indeed, when H218O is introduced to2, the nascent1becomes18O‐labeled. These results provide compelling evidence for a mechanism involving direct binding of a water moleculetransto the oxo atom in2with subsequent oxo–hydroxo tautomerism for its incorporation as the oxo atom of1. The nonplanar nature of the TMC supporting ligand makes this isomerization an irreversible transformation, unlike for their planar heme counterparts.more » « less

Abstract Abundant transition metal borides are emerging as substitute electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts for noble metals. Herein, an unusual canonic‐like behavior of theclattice parameter in the AlB2‐type solid solution Cr1–xMoxB2(x= 0, 0.25, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.75, 1) and its direct correlation to the HER activity in 0.5 M H2SO4solution are reported. The activity increases with increasingx, reaching its maximum atx= 0.6 before decreasing again. At high current densities, Cr0.4Mo0.6B2outperforms Pt/C, as it needs 180 mV less overpotential to drive an 800 mA cm−2current density. Cr0.4Mo0.6B2has excellent long‐term stability and durability showing no significant activity loss after 5000 cycles and 25 h of operation in acid. First‐principles calculations have correctly reproduced the nonlinear dependence of theclattice parameter and have shown that the mixed metal/B layers, such as (110), promote hydrogen evolution more efficiently forx= 0.6, supporting the experimental results.more » « less

The investigation of the coordination chemistry of rare-earth metal complexes with cyanide ligands led to the isolation and crystallographic characterization of the Ln III cyanotriphenylborate complexes dichlorido(cyanotriphenylborato-κ N )tetrakis(tetrahydrofuran-κ O )lanthanide(III), [ Ln Cl 2 (C 19 H 15 BN)(C 4 H 8 O) 4 ] [lanthanide ( Ln ) = dysprosium (Dy) and yttrium Y)] from reactions of LnCl 3 , KCN, and NaBPh 4 . Attempts to independently synthesize the tetraethylammonium salt of (NCBPh 3 ) − from BPh 3 and [NEt 4 ][CN] in THF yielded crystals of the phenyl-substituted cyclic borate, tetraethylazanium 2,2,4,6-tetraphenyl-1,3,5,2λ 4 ,4,6-trioxatriborinan-2-ide, C 8 H 20 N + ·C 24 H 20 B 3 O 3 − or [NEt 4 ][B 3 (μ-O) 3 (C 6 H 5 ) 4 ]. The mechanochemical reaction of BPh 3 and [NEt 4 ][CN] without solvent produced crystals of tetraethylazanium cyanodiphenyl-λ 4 -boranyl diphenylborinate, C 8 H 20 N + ·C 25 H 20 B 2 NO − or [NEt 4 ][NCBPh 2 (μ-O)BPh 2 ]. Reaction of BPh 3 and KCN in THF in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand (crypt) led to a crystal of bis[(2.2.2-cryptand)potassium] 2,2,4,6-tetraphenyl-1,3,5,2λ 4 ,4,6-trioxatriborinan-2-ide cyanomethyldiphenylborate tetrahydrofuran disolvate, 2C 18 H 36 KN 2 O 6 + ·C 24 H 20 B 3 O 3 − ·C 14 H 13 BN − ·2C 4 H 8 O or [K(crypt)] 2 [B 3 (μ-O) 3 (C 6 H 5 ) 4 ][NCBPh 2 Me]·2THF. The [NCBPh 2 (μ-O)BPh 2 ] 1− and (NCBPh 2 Me) 1− anions have not been structurally characterized previously. The structure of 1-Y was refined as a two-component twin with occupancy factors 0.513 (1) and 0.487 (1). In 4 , one solvent molecule was disordered and included using multiple components with partial site-occupancy factors.more » « less
