Abstract Objective: Water plays a critical role in the production of food and preparation of nutritious meals, yet few studies have examined the relationship between water and food insecurity. The primary objective of this study, therefore, was to examine how experiences of household water insecurity (HWI) relate to experiences of household food insecurity (HFI) among a pastoralist population living in an arid, water-stressed region of northern Kenya. Design: We implemented the twelve-item Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE, range 0–36) Scale and the nine-item Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS, range 0–27) in a cross-sectional survey to measure HWI and HFI, respectively. Data on socio-demographic characteristics and intake of meat and dairy in the prior week were collected as covariates of interest. Setting: Northern Kenya, June–July 2019. Participants: Daasanach pastoralist households ( n 136) from seven communities. Results: In the prior 4 weeks, 93·4 % and 98·5 % of households had experienced moderate-to-severe HWI and HFI, respectively. Multiple linear regression analyses indicated a strong association between HWI and HFI. Each point higher HWISE score was associated with a 0·44-point (95 % CI: 0·22, 0·66, P = 0·003) higher HFIAS score adjusting for socio-economic status and other covariates. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate high prevalence and co-occurrence of HWI and HFI among Daasanach pastoralists in northern Kenya. This study highlights the need to address HWI and HFI simultaneously when developing policies and interventions to improve the nutritional well-being of populations whose subsistence is closely tied to water availability and access.

The dietary impacts of drought in a traditional pastoralist economy
Arid pastoralism is often understood as an adaptive strategy to marginal environments. As pastoralists become increasingly market integrated, novel dietary preferences and access to low quality market foods can erode traditional diets. These market‐based dietary shifts are particularly problematic during sustained drought, where reductions in traditional foods make pastoralists increasingly reliant on a cash economy. Among the Himba of the Kunene region in Namibia, colonial policies prohibiting access to livestock markets inhibit access to a cash‐based economy, leaving them vulnerable to food insecurity when nontraditional foods are needed to supplement traditional lifeways during drought. To understand the impacts of long‐term drought on diet and food insecurity, we collected longitudinal survey data on diet breadth and food insecurity across 4 years during a multi‐year drought.Participants completed a five‐item food insecurity survey and recalled diet breadth survey over the course of 4 years. Additionally, women completed a short survey of recent stressors, including health and resource stressors . We used a set of multilevel models to estimate changes in food insecurity items and diet breadth changes over the course of the study period.Multilevel models predicted score outcomes, as well as individual item responses, by year of data collection. Results indicate a 43% increase in average food insecurity and a 15% decline in average diet breadth over the study period. Dietary recall indicates that drought caused a reduction in sour milk intake, and an increase in nontraditional foods, but no change in meat or maize consumption.Conclusions Sustained drought in the Kunene region is having long‐term impacts on food insecurity, which could result in dietary shifts that outlast the current period of drought. We consider the implications of this change, especially as it relates to increasing market integration and reliance on a cash‐based over a subsistence‐based economy.

Prevailing theories about animal foraging behaviours and the food webs they occupy offer divergent predictions about whether seasonally limited food availability promotes dietary diversification or specialization. Emphasis on how animals compete for food predominates in work on the foraging ecology of large mammalian herbivores, whereas emphasis on how the diversity of available foods generally constrains dietary opportunity predominates work on entire food webs. Reconciling predictions about what promotes dietary diversification is challenging because species’ different body sizes and mobilities modulate how they seek and compete for resources—the mechanistic bases of common predictions may not pertain to all species equally. We evaluated predictions about five large-herbivore species that differ in body size and mobility in Yellowstone National Park using GPS tracking and dietary DNA. The data illuminated remarkably strong and significant correlations between body size and five key indicators of diet seasonality (R2= 0.71–0.80). Compared to smaller species, bison and elk showed muted diet seasonality and maintained access to more unique foods when winter conditions constrained food availability. Evidence from GPS collars revealed size-based differences in species’ seasonal movements and habitat-use patterns, suggesting that better accounting for the allometry of foraging behaviours may help reconcile disparate ideas about the ecological drivers of seasonal diet switching.more » « less

ABSTRACT Gaining a more complete understanding of a species' dietary variability is crucial to properly discern distribution, population growth trends, and conservation actions. Endangered mountain gorillas live in topographically complex forests covering a wide elevational range and diverse habitat matrices. Since 1967, mountain gorillas have been studied at high elevations in the southwest of the Volcanoes National Park (VNP) in Rwanda, where groups use different compositions of habitats and have been growing at higher rates than groups in the northeast VNP region, which is characterized by lower elevations. Building on previous efforts, we describe dietary variability among VNP mountain gorilla groups by integrating data from groups ranging in the northeast VNP. We assessed and compared nutritional components of key foods (making up 80% of the diet) to better understand whether variation in diet quality could be linked to within‐population growth differences. Feeding and ranging data were collected between November 2019 and December 2022, using long‐term monitoring data, group scans, and focal animal sampling. To compare diet quality, we combined nutritional values from newly collected food plants and previously collected and assessed food plant samples using comparable field and laboratory methods. We recorded 57 new foods for the study population. Groups in the southwest (N = 8) and the northeast (N = 4) regions of VNP used different vegetation zones, and there was high dietary variability with low diet overlap among these regions. Although northeast groups rely on more diverse diets, key foods (making up ~80% of the diet) had comparable nutrient concentrations to southwest groups. This suggests that diet quality is unlikely to be a main driver of observed heterogeneous population growth. For follow‐up research, we discuss alternative explanations linked to food distribution, biomass, and energy expenditure to access foods. Our findings add important information for future habitat suitability assessments essential for mountain gorilla conservation management and habitat restoration and expansion efforts.more » « less

Abstract Growing evidence suggests that organisms with narrow niche requirements are particularly disadvantaged in small habitat patches, typical of fragmented landscapes. However, the mechanisms behind this relationship remain unclear. Dietary specialists may be particularly constrained by the availability of their food resources as habitat area shrinks. For herbivorous insects, host plants may be filtered out of small habitat fragments by neutral sampling processes and deterministic plant community shifts due to altered microclimates, edge effects and browsing by ungulates.We examined the relationship between forest fragment area and the abundance of dietary‐specialist and dietary‐generalist larval Lepidoptera (caterpillars) and their host plants in the northeastern USA. We surveyed caterpillars and their host plants over 3 years in equal‐sized plots within 32 forest fragments varying in area between 3 and 1014 ha. We tested whether the abundances and species richness of dietary specialists increased more than those of dietary generalists with increasing fragment area and, if so, whether the difference could be explained by reduced host plant availability or increased browsing by white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).The overall abundance of dietary specialists was positively related to fragment area; the relationship was substantially weaker for dietary generalists. There was notable variation among species within diet breadth groups, however. There was no effect of fragment area on the diversity of dietary‐specialist or dietary‐generalist caterpillars. Deer activity was not related to the abundances of either dietary‐generalist or dietary‐specialist caterpillars.Plant community composition was strongly associated with fragment area. Larger fragments were more likely to include host plants for both dietary‐specialist and dietary‐generalist caterpillars. Deer activity was correlated with decreased host plant availability for both groups, with a slightly stronger impact on host plants of dietary specialists. Although dietary specialists were more likely to lack host plants in fragments, the relationship between fragment area and host availability did not depend on caterpillar diet breadth.This study provides further evidence that decreasing patch area disproportionately impacts specialist consumers. Because this relationship was derived from equal‐sized plots, it is robust to some criticisms levelled at fragmentation research. The mechanisms for specialist consumer declines, however, remain elusive.more » « less

Abstract Small-scale farmers make up the majority of farmers worldwide yet experience particularly high rates of food insecurity. A growing body of literature explores pathways to food and nutrition security among small-scale farmers but has yet to reach consensus on the most effective pathways (e.g., crop specialization for market sale versus on-farm crop diversification for home consumption) to improve livelihoods. Using structural equation modelling (SEM) based on data drawn from the 2015/16 Uganda National Panel Survey, this study considers how farm and household characteristics including gender, age, education, farm size, region, and off-farm income relate to market engagement (farm sales, market purchases) and on-farm crop diversity (Simpson’s diversity). We then further examine how market engagement and on-farm crop diversity relate to household livelihood outcomes including dietary diversity and food security (number of food secure months). Findings suggest that both higher levels of market engagement and on-farm crop diversity are associated with increased dietary diversity. Higher levels of crop diversity—whether for market sale or for self-consumption—are strongly associated with improved food security. Market engagement is positively associated with increased dietary diversity, and this association is particularly strong for market purchases. Together, these findings highlight the potential for both market-based strategies and on-farm crop diversity to contribute to food security goals in Uganda, providing further evidence that these strategies can be complementary.more » « less
