Abstract There is a strong impetus to establish a circular phosphorus economy by securing internally renewable phosphate (Pi) resources for use as agricultural fertilizers. Reversible Piadsorption technologies such as ion exchange can remove and recover Pifrom water/wastewater for reuse. However, existing reversible adsorbents cannot effectively discriminate against arsenate (As(V)) due to the similarity between As(V) and Pichemical structure. If As(V) is co‐recovered with Pi, the value of the recovered products for agricultural reuse is low. The objective of this study was to construct an immobilized phosphate‐binding protein (PBP)‐based Piremoval and recovery system and analyze its selectivity for Piadsorption in the presence of As(V). A range of conditions was tested, including independent, sequential, and simultaneous exposure of the two oxyanions to immobilized PBP (PBP resin). The purity of the recovered Piproduct was assessed after inducing controlled desorption of the adsorbed oxyanions at high pH (pH 12.5). Piconstituted more than 97% of the adsorbed oxyanions in the recovered product, even when As(V) was initially present at twofold higher concentrations than Pi. Therefore, PBP resin has potential to selectively remove Pi, as well as release high‐purity Pifree of As(V) contamination suitable for subsequent agricultural reuse. Practitioner pointsExisting reversible phosphate (Pi) adsorbents cannot effectively discriminate against arsenate (As(V)) due to the similarity in their chemical structure.Co‐recovery of As(V) with Pican reduce the recovered product's reuse as a fertilizer. An immobilized phosphate‐binding protein (PBP)‐based system can be highly selective for Pieven in the presence of As(V).Piconstituted more than 97% of the recovered product, even when As(V) was present at 2‐fold higher concentrations than Pi.Immobilized PBP offers advantages over existing Piadsorbents by providing high‐purity Piproducts free of As(V) contamination for reuse.

A forward reconstruction, holographic method to overcome the lens effect during 3D detection of semi-transparent, non-spherical particles
Suspensions of semi-transparent particles such as polystyrene microparticles are commonly used as model systems in the study of micro-rheology, biology, and microfluidics.

Abstract We report the synthesis, X‐ray crystal structure, and molecular recognition properties of pillar[n]arene derivativeP[6]AS, which we refer to as Pillar[6]MaxQ along with analoguesP[5]ASandP[7]AStoward guests1–18. The ultratight binding affinity ofP[5]ASandP[6]AStoward quaternary (di)ammonium ions renders them prime candidates for in vitro and in vivo non‐covalent bioconjugation, for imaging and delivery applications, and as in vivo sequestration agents.more » « less

Biodiversity datasets, or descriptions of biodiversity datasets, are increasingly available through open digital data infrastructures such as Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF, https://gbif.org), Integrated Digitized Biocollections (iDigBio, https://www.idigbio.org) and the Biological Collection Access Service (BioCASE, http://www.biocase.org).
However, little is known about how these networks, and the data accessed through them, change over time. This dataset provide snapshots of the biodiversity dataset graphs as tracked by Preston (https://github.com/bio-guoda/preston , https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1410543 ).
The rdf/nquad and tsv snapshots were generated using the respective commands:
preston ls | bzip2 > preston-ls.nq.bz2
and
preston ls --log tsv | bzip2 > preston-ls.tsv.bz2
For convenience, the first 100 uncompressed entries of both files are included, as well as the sha256 hashes of the content of the files.
more » « less

Our understanding of phosphorus (P) dynamics in the deep subseafloor environment remains limited. Here we investigate potential microbial P uptake mechanisms in oligotrophic marine sediments beneath the North Atlantic Gyre and their effects on the relative distribution of organic P compounds as a function of burial depth and changing redox conditions. We use metagenomic analyses to determine the presence of microbial functional genes pertaining to P uptake and metabolism, and solution 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 31 P NMR) to characterize and quantify P substrates. Phosphorus compounds or compound classes identified with 31 P NMR include inorganic P compounds (orthophosphate, pyrophosphate, polyphosphate), phosphonates, orthophosphate monoesters (including inositol hexakisphosphate stereoisomers) and orthophosphate diesters (including DNA and phospholipid degradation products). Some of the genes identified include genes related to phosphate transport, phosphonate and polyphosphate metabolism, as well as phosphite uptake. Our findings suggest that the deep sedimentary biosphere may have adapted to take advantage of a wide array of P substrates and could play a role in the gradual breakdown of inositol and sugar phosphates, as well as reduced P compounds and polyphosphates.more » « less

Abstract Background and objectivesThe coproduct of ethanol industry, dried distiller's grains with solubles (DDGS), has phosphorus content in excess of the animal diet requirement, which leads to excess P in manure and causes environmental concerns. The objective of this study is to determine the technical and economic feasibility of recovering this excess P as a coproduct. FindingsThe amount of P was observed to reduce from 9.26 to 3.25 mg/g (db) of DDGS, which is consistent with the animal diet requirement of 3–4 mg P/g animal diet. For an existing dry grind plant of 40 million gallon ethanol capacity, an additional fixed cost of $5.7 million was estimated, with an operating cost increase of $1.29 million/year. ConclusionsThe total phosphorus recovered from the plant was estimated as 1,676 kg P/day, with an estimated operating cost of $2.33/kg P recovered. Significance and noveltyApproximately 37 million MT of DDGS is produced annually as animal food containing excess P, which is a serious concern for the environment. This study provides with an economically feasible solution to recover the excess P as a coproduct, which has a potential to be used as fertilizer on more than 56,000 acres of land annually, growing corn and soybean.more » « less
