Context Bees are the most important pollinators of crops worldwide. For most bees, patches of semi-natural habitat within or adjacent to crops can provide important nesting and food resources. Despite this, land cover change is rapidly reducing the abundance of semi-natural habitat within agroecological landscapes, with potentially negative consequences for bee communities and the services they provide. Objectives Identify how the availability of semi-natural habitat impacts bee communities across biogeographic regions, which may reveal commonalities and key governing principles that transcend a single region or taxa. Methods We analyze and compare the drivers of bee community composition in cotton fields within Brazil and the U.S. to reveal how land cover and land cover change impact bee community composition across these two regions. Results We show that the most critical factors impacting bee communities in cotton agroecosystems are the same in Brazil and the U.S.: bee abundance increases with cotton bloom density and the abundance of semi-natural habitat. Further, the loss of semi-natural habitat over a 5-year period negatively impacts bee abundance in both agroecosystems. Conclusions Given the importance of bee abundance for the provision of pollination service in cotton plants, our findings highlight the significance of small semi-natural habitat fragments in supporting key ecosystem service providers for both tropical and temperate cotton agroecological systems. We underscore the important role that local land managers play in biodiversity conservation, and the potential contribution they can make to pollination provision by supporting agricultural landscapes that conserve fragments of semi-natural habitat.

A sustainability framework based on threats, consequences, and solutions (TCS) for managing watershed commons
Sustainable management of common pool resources requires local information and participation. We develop a framework for managing commons based on threats, consequences, and solutions (TCS). The status of the community’s interaction with their local commons is critical in developing viable solutions to avoiding the loss of natural resources, enhancing the benefits they provide, and sustaining the functions they perform. Threats to natural resources, the consequences of their depletion, and the solutions local communities perceive as most effective to prevent this loss are assessed as related to socioeconomic and landscape factors to develop strategies for the resilience of commons. Communities and representative stakeholders (224 respondents) participated in a survey in Honduras’s Lake Yojoa watershed. The community’s perception was also evaluated for impacts of changes in land use and climate on local commons. An ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to determine the effect of land use, geographic, and demographic factors on community perceptions. Distance to the lake, landcover percentages, slope, type of work, age, and importance of tourism were significant in influencing community interaction and perception of TCS. The involvement of communities in deriving knowledge on TCS is critical to increasing the resilience of local commons to emerging threats.

Lake Victoria has experienced progressive eutrophication which has exacerbated the proliferation of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs). Fueled by anthropogenic nutrient loadings and climate change, these cHABs are increasing in distribution, duration, and frequency, particularly in areas such as the Winam Gulf. With limited resources and infrastructure, local communities have been left vulnerable as they rely on the lake for water for domestic use. Our study presents the results of a localized survey on how small-scale fishing communities perceive and respond to the threat of cHABs in the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria, Kenya. We used a mixed-methods approach of quantitative and qualitative data-gathering techniques to elucidate the perceptions and consequences of cHABs in local communities. Our results demonstrate most (93.67%) respondents were aware of cHABs in the lake, but were not knowledgeable of cHAB threats to human and animal health. Respondents noted that fish catches decreased during cHABs, with this economic consequence serving as a primary concern of communities. Notably, respondents altered their use of lake water during perceived cHAB events and relied on other means of water treatment or alternative water sources. Overall, cHAB information was selfsourced or passed on from community elders, with no public mechanism for adequate cHAB risk communication. Lake Victoria serves as a critical resource to the Eastern African region and requires a concerted cHAB response effort. Therefore, we recommend the development of a public awareness program to reduce cHAB exposure in these at-risk communities.more » « less

Post-industrial communities across the world are transitioning from industrial economies and identities to an uncertain future. Their successful transitions depend on communities’ abilities to navigate change and maintain a quality of life, or their community’s resilience. Previous scholarship offers resources and capabilities that facilitate or inhibit community resilience such as leadership, social capital, and information. However, collective memory is not well integrated within the community resilience literature. Drawing on data from interviews with 33 community leaders in the town of Anaconda, Montana, we illuminate the impact of collective memory on community resilience. The Anaconda Smelter Stack stands out as a specific landmark and prominent feature of the built environment that perpetuates particular collective memories in Anaconda. We find that collective memory is an integral part of community resilience, where memories can aid in a community’s recovery and rebuilding or constrain thinking and divide viewpoints. We argue that ignoring collective memory’s connections to resilience can undermine efforts to face changes in these communities.more » « less

Functional diversity is expected to decrease following land conversion. Empirically, however, the consequences of such changes are highly variable. One possible explanation is that the magnitude and direction of functional diversity change depends on how agricultural land conversion interacts with the original determinants of community assembly (e.g., temperature and elevation gradients). We compared the functional structure of 50 Anolis lizard communities on the island of Hispaniola in both forested and deforested habitats along an elevation gradient, as elevation often determines community composition. We used morphological measurements of body size, limb and tail length, and toepad width to capture ecomorphological aspects of functional diversity. These traits are strongly linked to habitat use which has been shown to be the primary axis of niche partitioning in anoles. We found that deforestation had little effect on functional (morphological) richness at low elevations but increased functional richness and evenness at high elevations, where natural communities are depauperate due to thermal constraints. Simultaneously, deforestation reduced spatial turnover and eliminated morphologically peripheral species. These results suggest that how land conversion affects communities depends on whether it relaxes or reinforces a community’s dominant environmental filters: at high elevations, as deforestation increases daytime temperatures, the filters that typically shape these communities are relaxed, allowing them to functionally resemble low elevation communities. While this enriches high-elevation communities, it also removes morphologically unique species and homogenizes diversity across elevations. Our results highlight that how land conversion reorganizes the functional structure of a community depends on that community’s environmental context.more » « less
