Soil pits and horizons were described and sampled as part of the Lateral Weathering project within Watershed 3, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Woodstock, NH, USA from 2018-2020. Soil pits were dug and described using NRCS methods. When possible, physical samples were archived in the Hubbard Brook Sample Archive. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Soil Acid-Base Properties and Microbial Activity, Watershed 1 and West of Watershed 6 (2015-2016)

In summer 2015 and spring 2016, researchers collected soils from the CaSiO3-enriched watershed at Hubbard Brook (W1) and from a nearby site west of the reference watershed at Hubbard Brook (W6). These soils were sampled throughout the hardwood zone of each watershed, and the sampling scheme explicitly examined pit-and-mound microtopographic gradients. These soils were analyzed for acid-base properties, net and gross N cycling rates, microbial biomass, and C cycling rates. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the US Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Overstory foliage is collected in late summer from a reference forest to the west of Watershed 6 (also referred to as Bear Brook Watershed). Concentrations of C, N, P, K, Ca, Mn, Mg, and the natural abundance of N and C isotopes (delta-15N and delta-13C) in foliage are measured. These measurements, in combination with litterfall estimates of foliar biomass, allow us to estimate the pool of nutrients in foliage. They also allow us to estimate nutrient retranslocation, using measurements of leaf litterfall chemistry. Long-term measurements continue with the aim of detecting disturbances in nutrient cycling and trends in foliar chemistry over long time scales. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). We sampled soils on watershed 5 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in 1983, prior to a whole-tree harvest conducted in the winter of 1983-84. We resampled in 1986, 1991, and 1998. All sampling was performed using a quantitative soil pit method. Samples of the combined Oi and Oe horizons; the Oa horizon; 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and >20 cm layers of mineral soil; and the C horizon were collected. Grab samples of pedogenic mineral horizons were also taken from the sides of a subset of pits in each year. Here we report soil chemistry, mass of soil, percent rock, bulk density, and organic matter. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES).
