Title: Yet Another Case of Lithium Metal Atoms and Germanium Atoms Sharing Chemistry in the Solid State: Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Ba 2 LiGe 3
Abstract Several Ba−Li−Ge ternary phases are known and structurally characterized, including the title compound Ba2LiGe3. Its structure is reported to contain [Ge6]10−anions that exhibit delocalized bonding with a Hückel‐like aromatic character. The Ge atoms are in the same plane with the Li atoms, and if both types of atoms are considered as covalently bonded, [LiGe3]4−honeycomb‐like layers will result. The latter are separated by slabs of Ba2+cations. However, based on the systematic work detailed herein, it is necessary to re‐evaluate the phase as Ba2Li1−xGe3+x(x<0.05). Although small, the homogeneity range is clearly demonstrated in the gradual change of the unit cell for four independent samples. Subsequent characterization by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction methods shows that the Ba2Li1−xGe3+xstructure, responds to the varied number of valence electrons and the changes are most pronounced for the refined lengths of the Li−Ge and Ge−Ge bonds. Indirectly, the changes in the Ge−Li/Ge distances within layers affect the stacking too, and these changes can be correlated to the variation of thec‐cell parameter. Chemical bonding analysis based on TB‐LMTO‐ASA level calculations affirms the notion for covalent character of the Ge−Ge bonds; the Ba−Ge and Li−Ge interactions also show some degree of covalency.  more » « less

  1. Clathrate phases with crystal structures exhibiting complex disorder have been the subject of many prior studies. Here we report syntheses, crystal and electronic structure, and chemical bonding analysis of a Li-substituted Ge-based clathrate phase with the refined chemical formula Ba8Li5.0(1)Ge41.0, which is a rare example of ternary clathrate-I where alkali metal atoms substitute framework Ge atoms. Two different synthesis methods to grow single crystals of the new clathrate phase are presented, in addition to the classical approach towards polycrystalline materials by combining pure elements in desired stoichiometric ratios. Structure elucidations for samples from different batches were carried out by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction methods. The ternary Ba8Li5.0(1)Ge41.0 phase crystallizes in the cubic type-I clathrate structure (space group no. 223, a  10.80 Å), with the unit cell being substantially larger compared to the binary phase Ba8Ge43 (Ba8□3Ge43, a  10.63 Å). The expansion of the unit cell is the result of the Li atoms filling vacancies and substituting atoms in the Ge framework, with Li and Ge co-occupying one crystallographic (6c) site. As such, the Li atoms are situated in four-fold coordination environment surrounded by equidistant Ge atoms. Analysis of chemical bonding applying the electron density/ electron localizability approach reveals ionic interaction of barium with the Li–Ge framework, while the lithium-germanium bonds are strongly polar covalent.

  2. Reported is the synthesis of a new polar intermetallic phase, Ca4CdIn2Ge4, crystals of which can be readily obtained employing the In‐flux method. The structure and the chemical composition of the new compound are established based on single‐crystal X‐Ray diffraction and energy‐dispersive X‐Ray spectroscopy data. Ca4CdIn2Ge4crystallizes in a monoclinic crystal system with the space groupC2/m(no. 12) with lattice parametersa = 16.7383(12) Å,b = 4.4235(3) Å,c = 7.4322(5) Å, andβ = 106.560(1)°. The structure can formally be classified as a variant of the Mg5Si6structure type (Pearson symbolmS22). Considering the InGe and CdGe interactions as mostly covalent, the polyanionic substructure can be rationalized as consisting of ribbons of edge‐shared [InGe4] tetrahedra connected by Ge2dimers and bridged by Cd atoms in nearly square‐planar environment. Chemical bonding analysis based on TB‐LMTO‐ASA calculations affirms the notion for covalent character of the GeGe bonding with the dimers. The calculations also show that the bonding in the tetrahedra is more covalent in character than the bonding in square‐planar fragments, with the CaGe interactions being the least covalent among all interactions, though not exactly ionic.

  3. Abstract Amorphous thin films of Ti doped GeO2are of interest for coatings of the mirrors in gravitational wave detectors (GWDs) due to their low internal friction (Vajenteet al2021Phys. Rev. Lett.127071101). The addition of Ti to amorphous GeO2(a-GeO2) enables tailoring of the optical and structural properties of the mixtures. However, the specific modifications that occur in the amorphous network with the addition of Ti are not known. In this work, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to identify modifications to the bonding of Ge and Ti atoms in mixtures of Ti dopeda-GeO2with different Ti cation content. The formation of (Ti–O–Ge) bonds is evidenced from: (1) the presence of a peak which intensity increases with Ti content and causes a shift to lower binding energy (BE) of the core level O 1speak; (2) the shift to higher BE of the Ti 2p3/2peak and a decrease in the energy split; and (3) the shift to lower BE of the Ge 3d5/2peak and increase in the energy split. These changes reflect modifications to the bonding when Ge replaces Ti in Ti–O–Ti bonds and Ti replaces Ge in Ge–O–Ge bonds due to their difference in electronegativity. A decrease in the O–O nearest-neighbour distance due to the incorporation of Ti atom is also observed from the broadening of the valence band spectra. The results show the 0.44 Ti dopeda-GeO2mixture has a balance between the (Ti–O–Ge) and the (Ge–O–Ge) networks, not observed in Ti poor and Ti rich mixtures. This finding could have important consequences in the optimisation of amorphous Ti dopeda-GeO2mixtures for low internal friction coatings of GWDs.

  4. Abstract During the search for transition metal‐free alkyne hydrogenation catalysts, two new ternary Ca−Ga−Ge phases, Ca2Ga4Ge6(Cmc21, a=4.1600(10) Å, b=23.283(5) Å, c=10.789(3) Å) and Ca3Ga4Ge6(C2/m, a=24.063(2) Å, b=4.1987(4) Å, c=10.9794(9) Å, β=91.409(4)°), were discovered. These compounds are isostructural to the previously established Yb2Ga4Ge6and Yb3Ga4Ge6analogues, and according to Zintl‐Klemm counting rules, consist of anionic [Ga4Ge6]4−and [Ga4Ge6]6−frameworks in which every Ga and Ge atom would have a formal octet with no Ga−Ga or Ga−Ge π‐bonding. These compounds are metallic, based on temperature dependent electrical resistivity and thermopower measurements for Ca3Ga4Ge6, along with density functional theory calculations for both phases. Unlike the highly active 13‐layer trigonal CaGaGe phase, these new compounds exhibit minimal activity in the semi/full alkyne hydrogenation of phenylacetylene, which is consistent with previous observations that the lack of a formal octet for framework atoms is essential for catalysis in these Zintl‐Klemm compounds.

  5. Abstract Li+and Bi3+(at 1:1 ratio) substitution of Pb2+in the model compound PbZrO3is investigated. It is found that [Pb1−x(Li1/2Bi1/2)x]ZrO3ceramics remain phase pure of orthorhombic perovskite atx = 0.05, are almost phase pure atx = 0.10 and 0.15, and contain minor amounts of impurity phases atx = 0.20. The substitution allows the ceramics to be sintered to a high density at reduced temperatures, and at the same time, significantly enhances the dielectric breakdown strength. At 160°C when reversible antiferroelectric (AFE)–ferroelectric (FE) phase transitions are observed in all compositions, the chemical substitution is shown to reduce the electric hysteresis, increase the energy storage density, and improve the energy efficiency. The results will help design future high‐performance ceramics for energy storage capacitors. It is further observed that the (Li1/2Bi1/2) substitution of Pb in PbZrO3weakly impacts the dielectric behavior of the ceramics: The temperature at dielectric maximum,Tm, varies within a narrow range of 232.4–237.6°C; the relaxation parameter in the paraelectric phase,γ, stays close to unity and barely changes; and the diffuseness parameter of the phase transition atTm,d, remains low. Defect dipoles of preferably along 〈1 1 0〉 directions are proposed to explain the un‐disrupted long‐range AFE order in the [Pb1−x(Li1/2Bi1/2)x]ZrO3ceramics.
