Title: The two-photon exchange experiment at DESY
Abstract We propose a new measurement of the ratio of positron-proton to electron-proton elastic scattering at DESY. The purpose is to determine the contributions beyond single-photon exchange, which are essential for the Quantum Electrodynamic (QED) description of the most fundamental process in hadronic physics. By utilizing a 20 cm long liquid hydrogen target in conjunction with the extracted beam from the DESY synchrotron, we can achieve an average luminosity of$$2.12\times 10^{35}$$ 2.12 × 10 35  cm$$^{-2}\cdot $$ - 2 · s$$^{-1}$$ - 1  ($$\approx 200$$ 200 times the luminosity achieved by OLYMPUS). The proposed two-photon exchange experiment (TPEX) entails a commissioning run at a beam energy of 2 GeV, followed by measurements at 3 GeV, thereby providing new data up to$$Q^2=4.6$$ Q 2 = 4.6  (GeV/c)$$^2$$ 2 (twice the range of current measurements). Abstract We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive$$\rho ^0$$ ρ 0 meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160 GeV/cpolarised$$ \mu ^{+}$$ μ + and$$ \mu ^{-}$$ μ - beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0 GeV/$$c^2$$ c 2 $$< W<$$ < W < 17.0 GeV/$$c^2$$ c 2 , 1.0 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ 2 $$< Q^2<$$ < Q 2 < 10.0 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ 2 and 0.01 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ 2 $$< p_{\textrm{T}}^2<$$ < p T 2 < 0.5 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ 2 . Here,Wdenotes the mass of the final hadronic system,$$Q^2$$ Q 2 the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T the transverse momentum of the$$\rho ^0$$ ρ 0 meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($$\gamma ^*_T \rightarrow V^{ }_L$$ γ T V L ) indicate a violation ofs-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive$$\rho ^0$$ ρ 0 production.

  2. Abstract This paper presents a search for dark matter,$$\chi $$ χ , using events with a single top quark and an energeticWboson. The analysis is based on proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS experiment at$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s = 13 TeV during LHC Run 2 (2015–2018), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$$^{-1}$$ - 1 . The search considers final states with zero or one charged lepton (electron or muon), at least oneb-jet and large missing transverse momentum. In addition, a result from a previous search considering two-charged-lepton final states is included in the interpretation of the results. The data are found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions and the results are interpreted in terms of 95% confidence-level exclusion limits in the context of a class of dark matter models involving an extended two-Higgs-doublet sector together with a pseudoscalar mediator particle. The search is particularly sensitive to on-shell production of the charged Higgs boson state,$$H^{\pm }$$ H ± , arising from the two-Higgs-doublet mixing, and its semi-invisible decays via the mediator particle,a:$$H^{\pm } \rightarrow W^\pm a (\rightarrow \chi \chi )$$ H ± W ± a ( χ χ ) . Signal models with$$H^{\pm }$$ H ± masses up to 1.5 TeV andamasses up to 350 GeV are excluded assuming a$$\tan \beta $$ tan β value of 1. For masses ofaof 150 (250) GeV,$$\tan \beta $$ tan β values up to 2 are excluded for$$H^{\pm }$$ H ± masses between 200 (400) GeV and 1.5 TeV. Signals with$$\tan \beta $$ tan β values between 20 and 30 are excluded for$$H^{\pm }$$ H ± masses between 500 and 800 GeV.

  3. Abstract A search is reported for long-lived dark photons with masses between 0.1 GeV and 15 GeV, from exotic decays of Higgs bosons produced via vector-boson-fusion. Events that contain displaced collimated Standard Model fermions reconstructed in the calorimeter or muon spectrometer are probed. This search uses the full LHC Run 2 (2015–2018) data sample collected in proton–proton collisions at$$\sqrt{s}=13$$ s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139$$fb^{-1}$$ f b - 1 . Dominant backgrounds from Standard Model processes and non-collision sources are estimated using data-driven techniques. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected background. Upper limits on the Higgs boson to dark photon branching fraction are reported as a function of the dark photon mean proper decay length or of the dark photon mass and the coupling between the Standard Model and the potential dark sector. This search is combined with previous ATLAS searches obtained in the gluon–gluon fusion andWHproduction modes. A branching fraction above 10% is excluded at 95% CL for a 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying into two dark photons for dark photon mean proper decay lengths between 173 and 1296 mm and mass of 10 GeV.

Measurements are presented of the cross-section for the central exclusive production ofJ/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^- J / ψ μ + μ and\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^- ψ ( 2 S ) μ + μ processes in proton-proton collisions at\sqrt{s} = 13 \ \mathrm{TeV} s = 13 T e V with 2016–2018 data. They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity2<\eta_{\mu^±} < 4.5 2 < η μ ± < 4.5 ) and mesons in the rapidity range2.0 < y < 4.5 2.0 < y < 4.5 . The integrated cross-section results are\sigma_{J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-}(2.0 σ J / ψ μ + μ ( 2.0 < y J / ψ < 4.5 , 2.0 < η μ ± < 4.5 ) = 400 ± 2 ± 5 ± 12 p b , σ ψ ( 2 S ) μ + μ ( 2.0 < y ψ ( 2 S ) < 4.5 , 2.0 < η μ ± < 4.5 ) = 9.40 ± 0.15 ± 0.13 ± 0.27 p b , where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the luminosity determination. In addition, a measurement of the ratio of\psi(2S) ψ ( 2 S ) andJ/\psi J / ψ cross-sections, at an average photon-proton centre-of-mass energy of1\ \mathrm{TeV} 1 T e V , is performed, giving$ = 0.1763 ± 0.0029 ± 0.0008 ± 0.0039,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the knowledge of the involved branching fractions. For the first time, the dependence of theJ/\psi$ J / ψ and\psi(2S) ψ ( 2 S ) cross-sections on the total transverse momentum transfer is determined inpp p p collisions and is found consistent with the behaviour observed in electron-proton collisions.

Abstract The elliptic flow$$(v_2)$$ ( v 2 ) of$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ D 0 mesons from beauty-hadron decays (non-prompt$${\textrm{D}}^{0})$$ D 0 ) was measured in midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ s NN = 5.02  TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ D 0 mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.8)$$ ( | y | < 0.8 ) from their hadronic decay$$\mathrm {D^0 \rightarrow K^-\uppi ^+}$$ D 0 K - π + , in the transverse momentum interval$$2< p_{\textrm{T}} < 12$$ 2 < p T < 12  GeV/c. The result indicates a positive$$v_2$$ v 2 for non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ D 0 mesons with a significance of 2.7$$\sigma $$ σ . The non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ D 0 -meson$$v_2$$ v 2 is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2$$\sigma $$ σ significance in$$2< p_\textrm{T} < 8~\textrm{GeV}/c$$ 2 < p T < 8 GeV / c , and compatible with the$$v_2$$ v 2 of beauty-decay electrons. Theoretical calculations of beauty-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.
