This is the third edition of the NSF Science Plan for the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI). It was developed to focus natural hazards research on some of the major challenges communities face as they work to enhance their resilience to natural hazard events. It provides information for researchers, funding agencies, practitioners, students, and the public on the critical research needs and the process of conducting multi-hazard research to advance hazards engineering practice and community resilience. The Science Plan provides Grand Challenges and Key Research Questions.

Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure, Five-Year Science Plan, Multi-Hazard Research to Make a More Resilient World, First Edition
The NHERI Five-Year Science Plan is posed as a set of three Grand Challenges with five Key Research Questions to guide NHERI research. The research will deliver technical breakthroughs to improve the resilience and sustainability of existing and future civil infrastructure, also known as the built environment. High priority research subject areas are also provided for each of the key research questions to assist future researchers in achieving Grand Challenges.

Technology transfer entails the systematic transference of scientific research results to practical tasks. The research product may be a novel design, an effective process, a tool or a set of tools. Effective technology transfer depends on many factors. It includes recognizing a gap in knowledge, focusing on the end user’s needs, long-term planning, effective communication and collaboration between researchers, standards organizations, and potential users, and a successful reduction of the knowledge or training burden required by the user. This Research Topic provides five examples of robust technology transfer from researchers seeking to mitigate the effect of natural hazards on the built and natural environment—transfers of knowledge that will significantly advance our nation’s resilience in the face of growing natural hazard threats. In 2016, the National Science Foundation established the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) network. NHERI provides engineering and social science researchers with access to a world-class research infrastructure to support their efforts to improve the resilience and sustainability of the nation’s civil, natural and social infrastructure against earthquakes, windstorms and associated natural hazards such as tsunami and storm surge in coastal areas. Supported by the National Science Foundation, NHERI is a nation-wide network that consists of 12 university-based, shared-use experimental facilities, a computational modeling and simulation center, and a shared community cyber-infrastructure.more » « less

Overall, Nickola C; Simpson, Jeffry A; Lavner, Justin A (Ed.)Attachment theory is a dominant theoretical framework guiding research on close relationships across the lifespan. Research on the role of attachment in family relationships, in particular, has been highly generative, resulting in a large empirical base spanning over five decades. In this chapter, we review evidence from the attachment literature addressing key questions in family relationships research including the developmental origins, legacy, and stability of children’s early relationships with parents. Evidence from meta-analytic and large-sample research reviewed in this chapter generally provides support for the key tenets of attachment theory as they pertain to early parent-child attachment relationships. However, throughout the chapter, we note important gaps in the current empirical base and offer suggestions for future research. In addition, we discuss how greater connection between different perspectives and approaches to studying close relationships can advance understanding of the role of attachment in family, as well as romantic, relationships.more » « less

Ethics and social responsibility are often viewed as key areas of concern for many engineering educators and professional engineers. Thus, it is important to consider how students and professionals understand and navigate ethical issues, explore how such perceptions and abilities change over time, and investigate if certain types of interventions and experiences (e.g., coursework, training, service activities, etc.) impact individual participants. The breadth of engineering as a profession also raises questions about how ethics and social responsibility are understood across a wide range of disciplines, subfields, and industry sectors. Recognizing a need for more empirical research to address such questions, our research team carried out a five year, longitudinal, mixed-methods study to explore students’ perceptions of ethics and social responsibility. This study relied on repeated use of quantitative measures related to ethics, along with qualitative interviews to explore how students’ perceptions of these issues change across time, between institutions, and in response to participation in certain experiences. Additionally, we are now initiating a follow-on study where we will collect survey and interview data from our previous participants now that most of them are in full-time job roles and/or pursuing graduate degrees, as well as from a new group of early career engineers to enlarge our sample. In this paper, we first give an overview of key research findings from our ongoing research that have been published or are under review. The second major part of this paper delves into some specific theoretical and methodological questions and challenges associated with our research. This paper will likely be of interest to educators and researchers who are involved with developing and/or evaluating ethical capabilities among engineering students.more » « less
