  1. To make computer science (CS) more equitable, many educational efforts are shifting foci from access and content understanding to include identification, agency, and social change. As part of these efforts, we look at how learners perceive themselves in relation to what they believe CS is and what it means to participate in CS. Informed by three design lenses, unblackboxing, culturally responsive computing, and creative production, we designed a physical computing kit and activities. Drawing from qualitative analysis of interviews, artifacts, and observation of six young people in a weeklong summer workshop, we report on the experiences of two young Black women designers. We found that using these materials young people were able to: leverage personal goals and prior experiences in computing work; feel as if they were figuring out computing systems; and recognize computational technologies as created by people for particular purposes. We observed that while the mix of materials and activities created some frustration for participants, it also prompted processes of community building and inquiry. We discuss implications for design of computational tools in equity-centered CS education and pose seamfulness as an emergent heuristic when designing for learning that engages young people with the social, not just material, systems of computing.

  2. Computer science education is widely viewed as a path to empowerment for young people, potentially leading to higher education, careers, and development of computational thinking skills. However, few resources exist for people with cognitive disabilities to learn computer science. In this paper, we document our observations of a successful program in which young adults with cognitive disabilities are trained in computing concepts. Through field observations and interviews, we identify instructional strategies used by this group, accessibility challenges encountered by this group, and how instructors and students leverage peer learning to support technical education. Our findings lead to guidelines for developing tools and curricula to support young adults with cognitive disabilities in learning computer science.

  4. In a new era of digital media and democracy, there is widespread concern that technologies have incapacitated us from learning and teaching across diverse communities and perspectives. While this notion may ring true in certain contexts, this paper describes a study, “Mobile City Science,” that designed a novel learning experience in which educators and young people used mobile and place-based technologies to document and analyze the diverse perspectives of community members living in rapidly changing urban areas. The objective of this work was to teach young people digital literacies associated with “city science,” an emerging interdisciplinary field that creates data-driven approaches to complicated community issues. Participants were videotaped as they collected and analyzed information about a specific neighborhood using wearable cameras, GPS devices, heart rate monitors, and a GIS software. Early findings show that Mobile City Science uses technology to engage people with diverse perspectives around a community scale problem.

This study explores how young people, aged 14-22, employed as facilitators of math learning for younger children in an out-of-school time organization, talk with each other about their experiences as they participate in a routine known as “debriefs.” Debriefs occur between facilitation sessions and allow opportunities for youth to discuss mathematical ideas and understand their roles as facilitators. They also provide space for youth to begin planning the next facilitation. Through interaction analysis of one typical debrief session, we offer implications for understanding how debriefs contribute to the unique ways that young people develop their pedagogical approaches—a process we call “youth pedagogical development.
