Title: Understanding Consumer Adoption of Light-Duty Electric Vehicles: An Interdisciplinary Literature Review

The present paper focuses on the adoption of light-duty electric vehicles (EVs), encompassing a comprehensive review and summary analysis of the existing research in the field to identify forthcoming research directions. An emerging interest in understanding factors that influence and accelerate the widespread adoption of EVs has produced insightful research from a variety of disciplines including transportation, natural resources, and social sciences. Considering the vast variety of research endeavors, it is important to establish a baseline understanding of consumer EV adoption to provide an agenda for future research needed to advance current knowledge. This review focuses on aggregating insights gained from 437 research articles across disciplines. Specifically, we systematically reviewed journal articles on EV adoption with the goal of identifying theories used to understand EV adoption, methods by which data was collected, and key findings related to perceived advantages of, and barriers to, EV adoption. Our results help draw an overarching picture of the state of the art in research on EV adoption across disciplines, and identify remaining gaps. We conclude by showing an evolution of methodological practices in EV research and suggesting potential avenues for future research that may be of interest to both academics and practitioners interested in accelerating the widespread adoption of electrified transportation by consumers.

  1. The rise of Electric Vehicles (EVs) has presented a promising solution to the environmental and resource challenges posed by conventional combustion engine vehicles. With their potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance air quality, the adoption of EVs is essential for a more sustainable future. However, despite their benefits, widespread adoption remains limited. Thus, understanding the key factors that impact consumer adoption is crucial for promoting their use. This study aims to identify and analyze the various determinants that influence EV adoption, including social and demographic, political, economic, technological, and environmental factors. The findings offer valuable insights into the most significant barriers to EV adoption and provide potential strategies to encourage their use. Furthermore, this study examines the feasibility and sustainability of integrating EVs with public transportation via park-and-ride stations, emphasizing the importance of promoting sustainable transportation given the continued reliance on personal vehicles for park-and-ride travel.

  2. Abstract

Summary: The automotive industry's shift to electric vehicles (EVs) faces persistent barriers in pricing, financing, and charging infrastructure, particularly affecting low-income and disadvantaged individuals. These hurdles pose challenges to achieving US decarbonization goals and hinder the development of a sustainable and electrified transportation sector. Global disruptions in the supply chain, driven by the pandemic and geopolitical tensions, exacerbate these challenges, keeping EV purchase prices elevated. Key disruptors include critical mineral scarcity, semiconductor shortages, and international trade and COVID-19-related restrictions, complicating efforts to overcome adoption hurdles. Methods/Design: Conducting a systematic review using Google Scholar and ScienceDirect, we focused on articles related to EV supply chain disruptions, equity, and adoption barriers published in English post-2009. We analyzed 130 articles for topical focus and key findings. Synthesis and Discussion: Our exploration reveals insights into the challenges of electrifying the transportation sector while addressing equity concerns. Proposing a systemic equity framework, we advocate for the simultaneous and effective administration of resources, policies, and cultural considerations for systematically marginalized communities. This holistic approach aims to navigate the complexities of the EV supply chain, fostering a future marked by equitable transport electrification. The intersection of equity issues with supply chain challenges emphasizes the timeliness and importance of this academic examination. Our contribution to the ongoing discourse on achieving a sustainable and inclusive transition to EVs delves into the dynamics of these challenges, highlighting the need for comprehensive solutions.

  3. Many rapidly developing countries around the world are at a crossroads when it comes to transportation, air quality, and sustainability. Indeed, the challenges presented by vehicular growth in India have motivated the search for sustainable transportation solutions. One solution constitutes ridehailing services, which are expected to reduce car ownership and provide affordable means of transportation. Another key solution is the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), which are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emission and address the growing demand for sustainable urban mobility. Using a unique survey data set collected in 2018 from a sample of 43,000 respondents spread across 20 cities in India, this paper attempts to shed light on the factors that affect adoption of on-demand transportation services and EVs in India. In particular, not only does this paper consider the socio-economic and demographic variables that affect these behavioral choices, but the modeling framework adopted in this study places a special emphasis on representing the important role played by attitudes, values, and perceptions in determining adoption of on-demand transportation services and EVs. It is observed that attitudes and values significantly affect the use of on-demand transportation services and EV ownership, suggesting that information campaigns and free trials/demonstrations would help advance the adoption of sustainable transportation modes. The model results help in the identification of policy options and infrastructure investments that can advance a sustainable transportation future in India.

  4. The development of new technologies is increasing transportation electrification and electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to become even more popular in coming years. High EV adoption rates can increase the potential to use EVs as an energy resource and operate in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H). This paper focuses on the resilience analysis of using EVs and roof-top solar photovoltaic systems (PVs) to provide power support in network microgrids (MGs) experiencing an outage due to extreme weather conditions. To determine the effectiveness of using EVs and PVs as backup energy resources, a set of resilience metrics are evaluated for different cases and duration. Simulation results show that the management of EVs and PVs in residential networked MGs could provide power support for several hours during the restoration of a distribution system experiencing an outage.

  5. Abstract

In the last three decades, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become one of the most influential technologies in the world, allowing the widespread adoption of consumer electronics and now electric vehicles (EVs), a key technology for tackling climate change. Decades of research in both academia and industry have led to the development of diverse chemistries for LIB components, aligning these technological advancements with global carbon neutrality goals. In this article, we discuss the fundamental materials chemistries employed in LIBs for EVs, focusing on how materials-level properties influence the electrochemical performance of the battery. We elaborate on factors such as supply-chain sustainability, raw materials availability, and geopolitical influences that shape the market dynamics of these battery materials. Additionally, we delve into current innovative materials design strategies aimed at enhancing the performance of LIBs, with a focus on improving energy density, safety, stability, and fast-charging capabilities. Finally, we offer our insights into the future trajectory of EV batteries, considering the ongoing research trends and evolving landscape of EVs in the context of global efforts toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation system.
