Title: ψ(2S) Suppression in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

The production of theψ(2S)charmonium state was measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions atsNN=5.02TeV, in the dimuon decay channel. A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of theψ(2S)andJ/ψresonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the regionpT<12GeV/c. The results are compared with the corresponding measurements inppcollisions, by forming the double ratio[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]PbPb/[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]pp. It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions theψ(2S)is suppressed by a factor of2with respect to theJ/ψ. Theψ(2S)nuclear modification factorRAAwas also obtained as a function of both centrality andpT. The results show that theψ(2S)resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to3with respect topp. Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and ofRAAwith higher-pTresults at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions at the LHC.

  1. The first observation of the decayΞbψ(2S)Ξand measurement of the branching ratio ofΞbψ(2S)ΞtoΞbJ/ψΞare presented. TheJ/ψandψ(2S)mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay modes. The results are based on proton-proton colliding beam data from the LHC collected by the CMS experiment ats=13TeVin 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of140fb1. The branching fraction ratio is measured to beB(Ξbψ(2S)Ξ)/B(ΞbJ/ψΞ)=0.840.19+0.21(stat)±0.10(syst)±0.02(B), where the last uncertainty comes from the uncertainties in the branching fractions of the charmonium states. New measurements of theΞb(5945)0baryon mass and natural width are also presented, using theΞbπ+final state, where theΞbbaryon is reconstructed through the decaysJ/ψΞ,ψ(2S)Ξ,J/ψΛK, andJ/ψΣ0K. Finally, the fraction ofΞbbaryons produced fromΞb(5945)0decays is determined.

The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity,<math display='inline'><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mi>y</mi><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mo><</mo><mn>0.8</mn></math>, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of<math display='inline'><mrow><msqrt><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>NN</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>5.02</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></mrow></math>. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-<math display='inline'><mi>x</mi></math>range<math display='inline'><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>0.3</mn><mi>–</mi><mn>1.4</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo><mo>×</mo><msup><mrow><mn>10</mn></mrow><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>3</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math>. Cross sections are given in five<math display='inline'><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mi>t</mi><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo></math>intervals in the range<math display='inline'><mrow><mn>0.04</mn><mo><</mo><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mi>t</mi><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo></mrow><mo><</mo><mn>1</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mrow><mi>GeV</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math>and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a<math display='inline'><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mi>t</mi><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo></math>dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. Measurements of<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>photoproduction probe the couplings between the<math display='inline'><mi>ϕ</mi><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>1020</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></math>and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. The kaon-proton scattering occurs at energies far above those available elsewhere. We present the first measurement of coherent photoproduction of<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>pairs on lead ions in ultraperipheral collisions using the ALICE detector, including the first investigation of direct<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>production. There is significant<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>production at low transverse momentum, consistent with coherent photoproduction on lead targets. In the mass range<math display='inline'><mrow><mn>1.1</mn><mo><</mo><msub><mrow><mi>M</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>K</mi><mi>K</mi></mrow></msub><mo><</mo><mn>1.4</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo><msup><mrow><mi>c</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math>above the<math display='inline'><mi>ϕ</mi><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>1020</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></math>resonance, for rapidity<math display='inline'><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><msub><mrow><mi>y</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>K</mi><mi>K</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mo><</mo><mn>0.8</mn></mrow></math>and<math display='inline'><msub><mi>p</mi><mrow><mi>T</mi><mo>,</mo><mi>K</mi><mi>K</mi></mrow></msub><mo><</mo><mn>0.1</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>c</mi></math>, the measured coherent photoproduction cross section is<math display='inline'><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>d</mi><mi>σ</mi><mo>/</mo><mi mathvariant='normal'>d</mi><mi>y</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3.37</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.61</mn><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mtext>stat</mtext><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo><mo>±</mo><mn>0.15</mn><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mi>syst</mi><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>mb</mi></mrow></math>. The center-of-mass energy per nucleon of the photon-nucleus (Pb) system<math display='inline'><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>W</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>γ</mi><mi>Pb</mi><mo>,</mo><mi>n</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></math>ranges from 33 to 188 GeV, far higher than previous measurements on heavy-nucleus targets. The cross section is larger than expected for<math display='inline'><mi>ϕ</mi><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>1020</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></math>photoproduction alone. The mass spectrum is fit to a cocktail consisting of<math display='inline'><mi>ϕ</mi><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>1020</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></math>decays, direct<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>photoproduction, and interference between the two. The<math display='inline'><mi mathvariant='normal'>ϒ</mi><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>3</mn><mi>S</mi><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></mrow></math>meson is observed for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, with a significance above 5 standard deviations. The ratios of yields measured in Pb-Pb and<math display='inline'><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi></math>collisions are reported for both the<math display='inline'><mi mathvariant='normal'>ϒ</mi><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>2</mn><mi>S</mi><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></mrow></math>and<math display='inline'><mi mathvariant='normal'>ϒ</mi><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>3</mn><mi>S</mi><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></mrow></math>mesons, as functions of transverse momentum and Pb-Pb collision centrality. These ratios, when appropriately scaled, are significantly less than unity, indicating a suppression of<math display='inline'><mi mathvariant='normal'>ϒ</mi></math>yields in Pb-Pb collisions. This suppression increases from peripheral to central Pb-Pb collisions. stretchy='false'>→</mo><mrow><msup><mi>μ</mi><mo>+</mo></msup></mrow><mrow><msup><mi>μ</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></mrow></math>decay mode leads to a branching fraction of<math display='inline'><mo stretchy='false'>[</mo><msubsup><mn>10.1</mn><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>2.7</mn></mrow><mrow><mo>+</mo><mn>3.3</mn></mrow></msubsup><mrow><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mi>stat</mi><mo A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of theψ(2S)andJ/ψresonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the regionpT<12  GeV/c. The results are compared with the corresponding measurements inppcollisions, by forming the double ratio[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]Pb−Pb/[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]pp. It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions theψ(2S)is suppressed by a factor of∼2with respect to theJ/ψ. Theψ(2S)nuclear modification factorRAAwas also obtained as a function of both centrality andpT. The results show that theψ(2S)resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to∼3with respect topp. Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and ofRAAwith higher-pTresults at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma
