Title: Co-Production of Knowledge at Sumida Farm Trains a New Generation of Community-Engaged Scientists
The Sumida watercress farm near Pu‘uloa (Pearl Harbor), O‘ahu has been in continuous operation since 1928. This family-run farm (Figure 1a) produces 70% of the state’s watercress crop, making it critical to Hawai‘i’s food production. The farm’s watercress relies completely on water from freshwater springs. However, the amount of water flowing from the springs has declined by half over the last century as a result of groundwater pumping, climate change, and other drivers (Oki, 2005). Mo‘olelo (oral histories) published in Hawaiian language newspapers from 1834 to 1948 document the springs’ use for agriculture and recreation by Hawaiian ali‘i (chiefs) for more than 1,000 years (Engels et al., 2020).  more » « less

  1. Abstract Indigenous peoples have cultivated biodiverse agroecosystems since time immemorial. The rise of metagenomics and high‐throughput sequencing technologies in biodiversity studies has rapidly expanded the scale of data collection from these lands. A respectful approach to the data life cycle grounded in the sovereignty of indigenous communities is imperative to not perpetuate harm. In this paper, we operationalize an indigenous data sovereignty (IDS) framework to outline realistic considerations for genomic data that span data collection, governance, and communication. As a case study for this framework, we use arthropod genomic data collected from diversified and simplified farm sites close to and far from natural habitats within a historic Kānaka ʻŌiwi (Indigenous Hawaiian) agroecosystem. Diversified sites had the highest Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTU) richness for native and introduced arthropods. There may be a significant spillover effect between forest and farm sites, as farm sites near a natural habitat had higher OTU richness than those farther away. We also provide evidence that management factors such as the number of Polynesian crops cultivated may drive arthropod community composition. Through this case study, we emphasize the context‐dependent opportunities and challenges for operationalizing IDS by utilizing participatory research methods, expanding novel data management tools through the Local Contexts Hub, and developing and nurturing community partnerships—all while highlighting the potential of agroecosystems for arthropod conservation. Overall, the workflow and the example presented here can help researchers take tangible steps to achieve IDS, which often seems elusive with the expanding use of genomic data.

Abstract The importance of glacier meltwater as a source of mountain-block recharge remains poorly quantified, yet it may be essential to the integrity of alpine aquatic ecosystems by maintaining baseflow in streams and perennial flow in springs. We test the hypothesis that meltwater from alpine glaciers is a critical source of recharge for mountain groundwater systems using traditional stable isotopic source-identification techniques combined with a novel application of microbial DNA. We find that not only is alpine glacier meltwater a critical source of water for many springs, but that alpine springs primarily supported by glacial meltwater contain microbial taxa that are unique from springs primarily supported by seasonal recharge. Thus, recharge from glacial meltwater is vital in maintaining flow in alpine springs and it supports their distinct microbiomes.

Abstract Despite its location in the rain shadow of the southern Sierra Nevada, the Panamint Range hosts a complex mountain groundwater system supporting numerous springs which have cultural, historical, and ecological importance. The sources of recharge that support these quintessential desert springs remain poorly quantified since very little hydrogeological research has been completed in the Panamint Range. Here we address the following questions: (i) what is the primary source of recharge that supports springs in the Panamint Range (snowmelt or rainfall), (ii) where is the recharge occurring (mountain‐block, mountain‐front, or mountain‐system) and (iii) how much recharge occurs in the Panamint Range? We answer questions (i) and (ii) using stable isotopes measured in spring waters and precipitation, and question (iii) using a chloride mass‐balance approach which is compared to a derivation of the Maxey–Eakin equation. Our dataset of the stable isotopic composition (δ18O andδ2H) of precipitation is short (1.5 years), but analyses on spring water samples indicate that high‐elevation snowmelt is the dominant source of recharge for these springs, accounting for 57 (±9) to 79 (±12) percent of recharge. Recharge from rainfall is small but not insignificant. Mountain‐block recharge is the dominant recharge mechanism. However, two basin springs emerging along the western mountain‐front of the Panamint Range in Panamint Valley appear to be supported by mountain‐front and mountain‐system recharge, while Tule Spring (a basin spring emerging at the terminus of the bajada on the eastern side of the Panamint Range) appears to be supported by mountain‐front recharge. Calculated recharge rates range from 19 mm year−1(elevations < 1000 mrsl) to 388 mm year−1(elevations > 1000 mrsl). The average annual recharge is approximately 91 mm year−1(equivalent to 19.4 percent of total annual precipitation). We infer that the springs in the Panamint Range (and their associated ecosystems) are extremely vulnerable to changes in snow cover associated with climate change. They are heavily dependent on snowmelt recharge from a relatively thin annual snowpack. These findings have important implications for the vulnerability of desert springs worldwide.

    The increased environmental abundance of anthropogenic reactive nitrogen species (Nr = ammonium [NH4+], nitrite [NO2−] and nitrate [NO3−]) may increase atmospheric nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations, and thus global warming and stratospheric ozone depletion. Nitrogen cycling and N2O production, reduction, and emissions could be amplified in carbonate karst aquifers because of their extensive global range, susceptibility to nitrogen contamination, and groundwater-surface water mixing that varies redox conditions of the aquifer. The magnitude of N2O cycling in karst aquifers is poorly known, however, and thus we sampled thirteen springs discharging from the karstic Upper Floridan Aquifer (UFA) to evaluate N2O cycling. The springs can be separated into three groups based on variations in subsurface residence times, differences in surface–groundwater interactions, and variable dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. These springs are oxic to sub-oxic and have NO3− concentrations that range from < 0.1 to 4.2 mg N-NO3−/L and DOC concentrations that range from < 0.1 to 50 mg C/L. Maximum spring water N2O concentrations are 3.85 μg N-N2O/L or ~ 12 times greater than water equilibrated with atmospheric N2O. The highest N2O concentrations correspond with the lowest NO3− concentrations. Where recharge water has residence times of a few days, partial denitrification to N2O occurs, while complete denitrification to N2 is more prominent in springs with longer subsurface residence times. Springs with short residence times have groundwater emission factors greater than the global average of 0.0060, reflecting N2O production, whereas springs with residence times of months to years have groundwater emission factors less than the global average. These findings imply that N2O cycling in karst aquifers depends on DOC and DO concentrations in recharged surface water and subsequent time available for N processing in the subsurface.
