Abstract In this paper, we study the superconvergence of the semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for linear hyperbolic equations in one spatial dimension. The asymptotic errors in cell averages, downwind point values, and the postprocessed solution are derived for the initial discretization by Gaussian projection (for periodic boundary condition) or Cao projection Cao et al. (SIAM J. Numer. Anal.5, 2555–2573 (2014)) (for Dirichlet boundary condition). We proved that the error constant in the superconvergence of order$$2k+1$$ for DG methods based on upwind-biased fluxes depends on the parity of the orderk. The asymptotic errors are demonstrated by various numerical experiments for scalar and vector hyperbolic equations.

Long‐time asymptotics and the radiation condition with time‐periodic boundary conditions for linear evolution equations on the half‐line and experiment
Abstract The asymptotic Dirichlet‐to‐Neumann (D‐N) map is constructed for a class of scalar, constant coefficient, linear, third‐order, dispersive equations with asymptotically time/periodic Dirichlet boundary data and zero initial data on the half‐line, modeling a wavemaker acting upon an initially quiescent medium. The large time asymptotics for the special cases of the linear Korteweg‐de Vries and linear Benjamin–Bona–Mahony (BBM) equations are obtained. The D‐N map is proven to be unique if and only if the radiation condition that selects the unique wave number branch of the dispersion relation for a sinusoidal, time‐dependent boundary condition holds: (i) for frequencies in a finite interval, the wave number is real and corresponds to positive group velocity, and (ii) for frequencies outside the interval, the wave number is complex with positive imaginary part. For fixed spatial location , the corresponding asymptotic solution is (i) a traveling wave or (ii) a spatially decaying, time‐periodic wave. The linearized BBM asymptotics are found to quantitatively agree with viscous core‐annular fluid experiments.

Abstract We consider the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians on a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary and prove two-term asymptotics for their Riesz means of arbitrary positive order. Moreover, when the underlying domain is convex, we obtain universal, non-asymptotic bounds that correctly reproduce the two leading terms in the asymptotics and depend on the domain only through simple geometric characteristics. Important ingredients in our proof are non-asymptotic versions of various Tauberian theorems.more » « less

Tobias Ekholm (Ed.)We prove nonlinear asymptotic stability of a large class of monotonic shear flows among solutions of the 2D Euler equations in the channel $$\mathbb{T}\times[0,1]$$. More precisely, we consider shear flows $(b(y),0)$ given by a function $$b$$ which is Gevrey smooth, strictly increasing, and linear outside a compact subset of the interval $(0,1)$ (to avoid boundary contributions which are incompatible with inviscid damping). We also assume that the associated linearized operator satisfies a suitable spectral condition, which is needed to prove linear inviscid damping. Under these assumptions, we show that if $$u$$ is a solution which is a small and Gevrey smooth perturbation of such a shear flow $(b(y),0)$ at time $t=0$, then the velocity field $$u$$ converges strongly to a nearby shear flow as the time goes to infinity. This is the first nonlinear asymptotic stability result for Euler equations around general steady solutions for which the linearized flow cannot be explicitly solved.more » « less

Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic elastic plane wave by a periodic rigid surface. The elastic wave propagation is governed by the two-dimensional Navier equation. Based on a Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map, a transparent boundary condition (TBC) is introduced to reduce the scattering problem into a boundary value problem in a bounded domain. By using the finite element method, the discrete problem is considered, where the TBC is replaced by the truncated DtN map. A new duality argument is developed to derive the a posteriori error estimate, which contains both the finite element approximation error and the DtN truncation error. An a posteriori error estimate based adaptive finite element algorithm is developed to solve the elastic surface scattering problem. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.more » « less

In some applications, it is reasonable to assume that geodesics (rays) have a consistent orientation so that a time-harmonic elastic wave equation may be viewed as an evolution equation in one of the spatial directions. With such applications in mind, motivated by our recent work [Hadamard- Babich ansatz for point-source elastic wave equations in variable media at high frequencies, Multiscale Model Simul. 19/1 (2021) 46–86], we propose a new truncated Hadamard-Babich ansatz based globally valid asymptotic method, dubbed the fast Huygens sweeping method, for computing Green’s functions of frequency-domain point-source elastic wave equations in inhomogeneous media in the high-frequency asymptotic regime and in the presence of caustics. The first novelty of the fast Huygens sweeping method is that the Huygens-Kirchhoff secondary-source principle is used to integrate many locally valid asymptotic solutions to yield a globally valid asymptotic solution so that caustics can be treated automatically. This yields uniformly accurate solutions both near the source and away from it. The second novelty is that a butterfly algorithm is adapted to accelerate matrix-vector products induced by the Huygens-Kirchhoff integral. The new method enjoys the following desired features: (1) it treats caustics automatically; (2) precomputed asymptotic ingredients can be used to construct Green’s functions of elastic wave equations for many different point sources and for arbitrary frequencies; (3) given a specified number of points per wavelength, it constructs Green’s functions in nearly optimal complexity O(N logN) in terms of the total number of mesh points N, where the prefactor of the complexity depends only on the specified accuracy and is independent of the frequency parameter. Three-dimensional numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the performance and accuracy of the new method.more » « less
