Tabular data provide answers to a significant portion of search queries. However, reciting an entire result table is impractical in conversational search systems. We propose to generate natural language summaries as answers to describe the complex information contained in a table. Through crowdsourcing experiments, we build a new conversation-oriented, open-domain table summarization dataset. It includes annotated table summaries, which not only answer questions but also help people explore other information in the table. We utilize this dataset to develop automatic table summarization systems as SOTA baselines. Based on the experimental results, we identify challenges and point out future research directions that this resource will support.

ReflectSumm: A Benchmark for Course Reflection Summarization
This paper introduces ReflectSumm, a novel summarization dataset specifically designed for summarizing students’ reflective writing. The goal of ReflectSumm is to facilitate developing and evaluating novel summarization techniques tailored to real-world scenarios with little training data, with potential implications in the opinion summarization domain in general and the educational domain in particular. The dataset encompasses a diverse range of summarization tasks and includes comprehensive metadata, enabling the exploration of various research questions and supporting different applications. To showcase its utility, we conducted extensive evaluations using multiple state-of-the-art baselines. The results provide benchmarks for facilitating further research in this area.

Summarization datasets are often assembled either by scraping naturally occurring public-domain summaries -- which are nearly always in difficult-to-work-with technical domains -- or by using approximate heuristics to extract them from everyday text -- which frequently yields unfaithful summaries. In this work, we turn to a slower but more straightforward approach to developing summarization benchmark data: We hire highly-qualified contractors to read stories and write original summaries from scratch. To amortize reading time, we collect five summaries per document, with the first giving an overview and the subsequent four addressing specific questions. We use this protocol to collect SQuALITY, a dataset of question-focused summaries built on the same public-domain short stories as the multiple-choice dataset QuALITY (Pang et al., 2021). Experiments with state-of-the-art summarization systems show that our dataset is challenging and that existing automatic evaluation metrics are weak indicators of quality.more » « less

Recent work has shown that large language models (LLMs) are capable of generating summaries zero-shot—i.e., without explicit supervision—that, under human assessment, are often comparable or even preferred to manually composed reference summaries. However, this prior work has focussed almost exclusively on evaluating news article summarization. How do zero-shot summarizers perform in other (potentially more specialized) domains?In this work we evaluate zero-shot generated summaries across specialized domains including: biomedical articles, and legal bills (in addition to standard news benchmarks for reference). We focus especially on the factuality of outputs. We acquire annotations from domain experts to identify inconsistencies in summaries and systematically categorize these errors. We analyze whether the prevalence of a given domain in the pretraining corpus affects extractiveness and faithfulness of generated summaries of articles in this domain. There has been a growing interest in developing machine learning (ML) models for code summarization tasks, e.g., comment generation and method naming. Despite substantial increase in the effectiveness of ML models, the evaluation methodologies, i.e., the way people split datasets into training, validation, and test sets, were not well studied. Specifically, no prior work on code summarization considered the timestamps of code and comments during evaluation. This may lead to evaluations that are inconsistent with the intended use cases. In this paper, we introduce the time-segmented evaluation methodology, which is novel to the code summarization research community, and compare it with the mixed-project and cross-project methodologies that have been commonly used. Each methodology can be mapped to some use cases, and the time-segmented methodology should be adopted in the evaluation of ML models for code summarization. To assess the impact of methodologies, we collect a dataset of (code, comment) pairs with timestamps to train and evaluate several recent ML models for code summarization. Our experiments show that different methodologies lead to conflicting evaluation results. We invite the community to expand the set of methodologies used in evaluations.more » « less

Social media9s explosive growth has resulted in a massive influx of electronic documents influencing various facets of daily life. However, the enormous and complex nature of this content makes extracting valuable insights challenging. Long document summarization emerges as a pivotal technique in this context, serving to distill extensive texts into concise and comprehensible summaries. This paper presents a novel three-stage pipeline for effective long document summarization. The proposed approach combines unsupervised and supervised learning techniques, efficiently handling large document sets while requiring minimal computational resources. Our methodology introduces a unique process for forming semantic chunks through spectral dynamic segmentation, effectively reducing redundancy and repetitiveness in the summarization process. Contrary to previous methods, our approach aligns each semantic chunk with the entire summary paragraph, allowing the abstractive summarization model to process documents without truncation and enabling the summarization model to deduce missing information from other chunks. To enhance the summary generation, we utilize a sophisticated rewrite model based on Bidirectional and Auto- Regressive Transformers (BART), rearranging and reformulating summary constructs to improve their fluidity and coherence. Empirical studies conducted on the long documents from the Webis-TLDR-17 dataset demonstrate that our approach significantly enhances the efficiency of abstractive summarization transformers. The contributions of this paper thus offer significant advancements in the field of long document summarization, providing a novel and effective methodology for summarizing extensive texts in the context of social media.more » « less
