Title: Supporting Focus on the Process of Learning, Rather Than the Product, in a STEAM Activity
This study explores how the design and facilitation of a STEAM activity during a professional development workshop supports a focus on learning through the process. How the activity was introduced and the whole group reflections – both mid-activity and at the conclusion of the activity - supported participants in making observations and focusing on the process, rather than the end product.  more » « less

    As part of the Institute for Scientist and Engineer Educators Professional Development Program (PDP), our team designed an activity for the Akamai internship program’s Preparation for Research Experiences and Projects (PREP) course. The activity focused on content around different renewable energy and storage technologies, and the widely applicable engineering practice of optimization through iteration and evaluating trade-offs. Here we describe the overall activity, with primary emphasis on how the PDP backward design process and integration of the Equity & Inclusion (E&I) theme led us to design and implement a unique model we call the “expert training model” that has important E&I implications. We found that an educational activity design that focuses on E&I considerations, such as identifying multiple ways to productively participate and developing learners’ identity in STEM, simultaneously satisfies criteria for being an engaging and authentic STEM experience. We also reflect on potential pitfalls and ways to improve and adapt this model.

We describe an experiment conducted with three domain experts to understand how well they can recognize types and performance stages of activities using speech data transcribed from verbal communications during dynamic medical teamwork. The insights gained from this experiment will inform the design of an automatic activity recognition system to alert medical teams to process deviations in real time. We contribute to the literature by (1) characterizing how domain experts perceive the dynamics of activity-related speech, and (2) identifying the challenges associated with system design for speech-based activity recognition in complex team-based work settings.

    Molecular chaperones play a central role in protein disaggregation. However, the molecular determinants that regulate this process are poorly understood. Hsp104 is an AAA+ ATPase that disassembles stress granules and amyloids in yeast through collaboration with Hsp70 and Hsp40.In vitrostudies show that Hsp104 processes different types of protein aggregates by partially translocating or threading polypeptides through the central pore of the hexamer. However, it is unclear how Hsp104 processing influences client protein functionin vivo. The middle domain (MD) of Hsp104 regulates ATPase activity and interactions with Hsp70. Here, we tested how MD variants, Hsp104A503Sand Hsp104A503V, process different protein aggregates. We establish that engineered MD variants fail to resolve stress granules but retain prion fragmentation activity required for prion propagation. Using the Sup35 prion protein, ourin vitroandin vivodata indicate that the MD variants can disassemble Sup35 aggregates, but the disaggregated protein has reduced GTPase and translation termination activity. These results suggest that the middle domain can play a role in sensing certain substrates and plays an essential role in ensuring the processed protein is functional.

  4. Abstract The influence of the copper ion exchange protocol on SCR activity of SSZ‐13 is quantified. Using the same parent SSZ‐13 zeolite, four exchange protocols are used to assess how exchange protocol impacts metal uptake and SCR activity. Large differences in the SCR activity, nearly 30 percentage points at 160 °C at constant copper content, are observed for different exchange protocols implying that different exchange protocols lead to different copper species. Hydrogen temperature programmed reduction on selected samples and infrared spectroscopy of CO binding corroborates this conclusion as the reactivity at 160 °C correlates with the intensity of the IR band at 2162 cm−1. DFT‐based calculations show that such an IR assignment is consistent with CO adsorbed on a Cu(I) cation within an eight‐membered ring. This work shows that SCR activity can be influenced by the ion exchange process even when different protocols lead to the same metal loading. Perhaps most interesting, a protocol used to generate Cu‐MOR for methane to methanol studies led to the most active catalyst both on a unit mass or unit mole copper basis. This points to a yet not recognized means to tailor catalyst activity as the open literature is silent on this issue.

  5. In this project summary, we briefly describe the culturally responsive gamified activity that taught students about the engineering design process. We provide an overview of its effectiveness of how the activity supported migratory adolescents’ engineering interest, self-efficacy, aspirational engineering identity, and how it engendered positive perceptions of using engineering as a tool for social justice.
