Title: Search for two-neutrino double-beta decay of 136 Xe to the excited state of 136 Ba with the complete EXO-200 dataset*
Abstract

A new search for two-neutrino double-beta (2νββ) decay of136Xe to theexcited state of136Ba is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset. A deep learning-based convolutional neural network is used to discriminate signal from background events. Signal detection efficiency is increased relative to previous searches by EXO-200 by more than a factor of two. With the addition of the Phase II dataset taken with an upgraded detector, the median 90% confidence level half-life sensitivity of 2νββdecay to thestate of136Ba isyr using a total136Xe exposure of 234.1 kg yr. No statistically significant evidence for 2νββdecay to thestate is observed, leading to a lower limit ofyr at 90% confidence level, improved by 70% relative to the current world's best constraint.

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large liquid scintillator detector designed to explore many topics in fundamental physics. In this study, the potential of searching for proton decay in themode with JUNO is investigated. The kaon and its decay particles feature a clear three-fold coincidence signature that results in a high efficiency for identification. Moreover, the excellent energy resolution of JUNO permits suppression of the sizable background caused by other delayed signals. Based on these advantages, the detection efficiency for the proton decay viais 36.9% ± 4.9% with a background level ofevents after 10 years of data collection. The estimated sensitivity based on 200 kton-years of exposure isyears, which is competitive with the current best limits on the proton lifetime in this channel and complements the use of different detection technologies.

On a lattice with 2+1-flavor dynamical domain-wall fermions at the physical pion mass, we calculate the decay constants of,, and. The lattice size is, which corresponds to a spatial extension offm, with a lattice spacing offm. For the valence light, strange, and charm quarks, we use overlap fermions at several mass points close to their physical values. Our results at the physical point areMeV,MeV,MeV,MeV, andMeV. The couplings ofandto the tensor current () can be derived from ratiosand, respectively, which are the first lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) results. We also obtain ratiosand, which reflect the size of heavy quark symmetry breaking in charmed mesons. Ratiosandcan be taken as a measure ofSU(3) flavor symmetry breaking.

We investigate the parton distribution function (PDF) uncertainty in the measurement of the effective weak mixing angleat the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The PDF-induced uncertainty is large in proton-proton collisions at the LHC due to the dilution effect. The measurement of the Drell-Yan forward-backward asymmetry () at the LHC can be used to reduce the PDF uncertainty in themeasurement. However, when including the full mass range of lepton pairs in thedata analysis, the correlation between the PDF updating procedure and theextraction leads to a sizable bias in the obtainedvalue. From our studies, we find that the bias can be significantly reduced by removing Drell-Yan events with invariant mass around theZ-pole region, while most of the sensitivity in reducing the PDF uncertainty remains. Furthermore, the lepton charge asymmetry in theWboson events as a function of the rapidity of the charged leptons,, is known to be another observable which can be used to reduce the PDF uncertainty in themeasurement. The constraint fromis complementary to that from, and thus no bias affects theextraction. The studies are performed using the error PDF Updating Method Package (ePump), which is based on Hessian updating methods. In this article, the CT14HERA2 PDF set is used as an example.

We report a measurement of the hyperfine-structure constants of the85Rb 4D3/2state using two-photon optical spectroscopy of the 5S1/24D3/2transition. The spectra are acquired by measuring the transmission of the low-power 795 nm lower-stage laser beam through a cold-atom sample as a function of laser frequency, with the frequency of the upper-stage, 1476 nm laser fixed. All 4 hyperfine components of the4D3/2state are well-resolved in the experimental data. The dominant systematic is the light shift from the 1476 nm laser, which is addressed by extrapolating line positions measured for a set of 1476 nm laser powers to zero laser power. The analysis of our experimental data yields both the magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole constants for the85Rb 4D3/2level, without using earlier hyperfine measurements of other atomic levels. The respective results,A=7.419(35) MHz andB=4.19(19) MHz, are discussed in context with previous works. Our investigation may be useful for optical atomic clocks for precision metrology and emerging atom-based quantum technologies, all-infrared excitation of Rb Rydberg levels, and molecular physics.

The best upper limit for the electron electric dipole moment was recently set by the ACME collaboration. This experiment measures an electron spin-precession in a cold beam of ThO molecules in their metastableH(3Δ1)state. Improvement in the statistical and systematic uncertainties is possible with more efficient use of molecules from the source and better magnetometry in the experiment, respectively. Here, we report measurements of several relevant properties of the long-livedQ(3Δ2)state of ThO, and show that this state is a very useful resource for both these purposes. TheQstate lifetime is long enough that its decay during the time of flight in the ACME beam experiment is negligible. The large electric dipole moment measured for theQstate, giving rise to a large linear Stark shift, is ideal for an electrostatic lens that increases the fraction of molecules detected downstream. The measured magnetic moment of theQstate is also large enough to be used as a sensitive co-magnetometer in ACME. Finally, we show that theQstate has a large transition dipole moment to theC(1Π1)state, which allows for efficient population transfer between the ground stateX(1Σ+)and theQstate viaXCQStimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP). We demonstrate 90 % STIRAP transfer efficiency. In the course of these measurements, we also determine the magnetic moment ofCstate, theXCtransition dipole moment, and branching ratios of decays from theCstate.
