Title: Search for a heavy neutral lepton that mixes predominantly with the tau neutrino
We report a search for a heavy neutral lepton (HNL) that mixes predominantly with ν τ . The search utilizes data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e + e collider. The data sample was collected at and just below the center-of-mass energies of the ϒ ( 4 S ) and ϒ ( 5 S ) resonances and has an integrated luminosity of 915 fb 1 , corresponding to ( 836 ± 12 ) × 10 6 e + e τ + τ events. We search for production of the HNL (denoted N ) in the decay τ π N followed by its decay via N μ + μ ν τ . The search focuses on the parameter-space region in which the HNL is long-lived, so that the μ + μ originate from a common vertex that is significantly displaced from the collision point of the KEKB beams. Consistent with the expected background yield, one event is observed in the data sample after application of all the event-selection criteria. We report limits on the mixing parameter of the HNL with the τ neutrino as a function of the HNL mass. Published by the American Physical Society2024  more » « less

  1. The ratio of branching fractions R ( D * ) = B ( B ¯ D * τ ν ¯ τ ) / B ( B ¯ D * ν ¯ ) , where is an electron or muon, is measured using a Belle II data sample with an integrated luminosity of 189 fb 1 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e collider. Data is collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance, and one B meson in the ϒ ( 4 S ) B B ¯ decay is fully reconstructed in hadronic decay modes. The accompanying signal B meson is reconstructed as B ¯ D * τ ν ¯ τ using leptonic τ decays. The normalization decay, B ¯ D * ν ¯ , produces the same observable final-state particles. The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields R ( D * ) = 0.262 0.039 + 0.041 ( stat ) 0.032 + 0.035 ( syst ) . This result is consistent with the current world average and with Standard Model predictions. Published by the American Physical Society2024

  2. We report the first evidence for the h b ( 2 P ) ϒ ( 1 S ) η transition with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations. The decay branching fraction is measured to be B [ h b ( 2 P ) ϒ ( 1 S ) η ] = ( 7.1 3.2 + 3.7 ± 0.8 ) × 10 3 , which is noticeably smaller than expected. We also set upper limits on π 0 transitions of B [ h b ( 2 P ) ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 3 , and B [ h b ( 1 P ) ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 3 , at the 90% confidence level. These results are obtained with a 131.4 fb 1 data sample collected near the ϒ ( 5 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e collider. 3. The inclusive production of the charm-strange baryon Ω c 0 is measured for the first time via its semileptonic decay into Ω e + ν e at midrapidity ( | y | < 0.8 ) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the center-of-mass energy s = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The transverse momentum ( p T ) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 2 < p T < 12 GeV / c . The branching-fraction ratio BR ( Ω c 0 Ω e + ν e ) / BR ( Ω c 0 Ω π + ) is measured to be 1.12 ± 0.22 (stat) ± 0.27 (syst). Comparisons with other experimental measurements, as well as with theoretical calculations, are presented. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  4. The first results of the study of high-energy electron neutrino ( ν e ) and muon neutrino ( ν μ ) charged-current interactions in the FASER ν emulsion-tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC are presented. A 128.8 kg subset of the FASER ν volume was analyzed after exposure to 9.5 fb 1 of s = 13.6 TeV p p data. Four (eight) ν e ( ν μ ) interaction candidate events are observed with a statistical significance of 5.2 σ ( 5.7 σ ). This is the first direct observation of ν e interactions at a particle collider and includes the highest-energy ν e and ν μ ever detected from an artificial source. The interaction cross section per nucleon σ / E ν is measured over an energy range of 560–1740 GeV (520–1760 GeV) for ν e ( ν μ ) to be ( 1.2 0.7 + 0.8 ) × 10 38 cm 2 GeV 1 [ ( 0.5 ± 0.2 ) × 10 38 cm 2 GeV 1 ], consistent with standard model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges. Published by the American Physical Society2024

  5. We present a search for the baryon number B and lepton number L violating decays τ Λ π and τ Λ ¯ π produced from the e + e τ + τ process, using a 364 fb 1 data sample collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. No evidence of signal is found in either decay mode, which have | Δ ( B L ) | equal to 2 and 0, respectively. Upper limits at 90% credibility level on the branching fractions of τ Λ π and τ Λ ¯ π are determined to be 4.7 × 10 8 and 4.3 × 10 8 , respectively. Published by the American Physical Society2024
