Abstract z > 5.5, the observed intergalactic medium (IGM) optical depth shows a significant scatter, indicating an inhomogeneous reionization process. However, the nature of the inhomogeneous reionization remains debated. A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE) is a JWST Cycle 1 program that has spectroscopically identified >400 [Oiii ] emitters in 25 quasar fields atz > 6.5. Combined with deep ground-based optical spectroscopy of ASPIRE quasars, the ASPIRE program provides the current largest sample for IGM-galaxy connection studies during cosmic reionization. We present the first results of IGM effective optical depth measurements around [Oiii ] emitters using 14 ASPIRE quasar fields. We find the IGM transmission is tightly related to reionization era galaxies to the extent that a significant excess of Lyα transmission exists around [Oiii ] emitters. We measure the stacked IGM effective optical depth of IGM patches associated with [Oiii ] emitters and find they reach the same IGM effective optical depth at leastd z ∼ 0.1 ahead of those IGM patches where no [Oiii ] emitters are detected, supporting earlier reionization around [Oiii ] emitters. Our results indicate an enhancement in IGM Lyα transmission around [Oiii ] emitters at scales beyond 25h −1cMpc, consistent with the predicted topology of reionization from fluctuating UV background models. -
Abstract Deep Very Large Telescope/MUSE optical integral field spectroscopy has recently revealed an abundant population of ultra-faint galaxies (
M UV≈ −15; 0.01L ⋆) atz = 2.9−6.7 due to their strong Lyα emission with no detectable continuum. The implied Lyα equivalent widths can be in excess of 100–200 Å, challenging existing models of normal star formation and indicating extremely young ages, small stellar masses, and a very low amount of metal enrichment. We use JWST/NIRSpec’s microshutter array to follow up 45 of these galaxies (11 hr in G235M/F170LP and 7 hr in G395M/F290LP), as well as 45 lower-equivalent width Lyα emitters. Our spectroscopy covers the range 1.7−5.1 micron in order to target strong optical emission lines: Hα , [Oiii ], Hβ , and [N II]. Individual measurements as well as stacks reveal line ratios consistent with a metal-poor nature (2%−40%Z ⊙, depending on the calibration). The galaxies with the highest equivalent widths of Lyα , in excess of 90 Å, have lower [N II]/Hα (1.9σ ) and [Oiii ]/Hβ (2.2σ ) ratios than those with lower equivalent widths, implying lower gas-phase metallicities at a combined significance of 2.4σ . This implies a selection based on Lyα equivalent width is an efficient technique for identifying younger, less chemically enriched systems. -
ABSTRACT We describe JWST/NIRSpec prism measurements of Ly α emission in z ≳ 5 galaxies. We identify Ly α detections in 10 out of 69 galaxies with robust rest-optical emission-line redshift measurements at 5 ≤ z < 7 in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) and DDT-2750 observations of the Extended Groth Strip field. Galaxies at z ≃ 6 with faint continuum (F150W=27–29 mag) are found with extremely large rest-frame Ly α equivalent widths (EWs; ranging up to 286 Å). Likely Ly α detections are also seen in two new z > 7 galaxies (z = 7.49 and 7.17) from the second epoch of CEERS observations, both showing large Ly α EWs that likely indicate significant transmission through the intergalactic medium (IGM). We measure high Ly α escape fractions in the 12 Ly α emitters in our sample (median 0.28), two of which show $f_{\rm esc}^{ {\rm Ly}\alpha }$ near unity (>0.80). We find that $50_{-11}^{+11}$ per cent of z ≃ 6 galaxies with [O iii] + H β EW>1000 Å have $f_{\rm esc}^{ {\rm Ly}\alpha }$ >0.2, consistent with the fractions found in lower redshift samples with matched [O iii] + H β EWs. While uncertainties are still significant, we find that only $10_{-5}^{+9}$ per cent of z > 7 galaxies with similarly strong rest optical emission lines show such large $f_{\rm esc}^{ {\rm Ly}\alpha }$, as may be expected if IGM attenuation of Ly α increases towards higher redshifts. We identify photometric galaxy overdensities near the z ≳ 7 Ly α emitters, potentially providing the ionizing flux necessary to create large ionized sightlines that facilitate Ly α transmission. Finally, we investigate the absence of Ly α emission in a comparable (and spectroscopically confirmed) galaxy overdensity at z = 7.88 in the Abell 2744 field, discussing new prism spectra of the field obtained with the UNCOVER program.

Abstract We present Keck Cosmic Web Imager Ly
α integral field spectroscopy of the fields surrounding 14 damped Lyα absorbers (DLAs) atz ≈ 2. Of these 14 DLAs, nine have high metallicities ([M/H] > − 0.3), and four of those nine feature a CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter ≲30 kpc. Our search reaches median Lyα line flux sensitivities of ∼2 × 10−17erg s−1cm−2over apertures of ∼6 kpc and out to impact parameters of ∼50 kpc. We recover the Lyα flux of three known Lyα -emitting Hi -selected galaxies in our sample. In addition, we find two Lyα emitters at impact parameters of ≈50–70 kpc from the high-metallicity DLA atz ≈ 1.96 toward QSO B0551-366. This field also contains a massive CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter of ≈15 kpc. Apart from the field with QSO B0551-366, we do not detect significant Lyα emission in any of the remaining eight high-metallicity DLA fields. Considering the depth of our observations and our ability to recover previously known Lyα emitters, we conclude that Hi -selected galaxies associated with high-metallicity DLAs atz ≈ 2 are dusty and therefore might feature low Lyα escape fractions. Our results indicate that complementary approaches—using Lyα , CO, Hα , and [Cii ] 158μ m emission—are necessary to identify the wide range of galaxy types associated withz ≈ 2 DLAs. -
Abstract We investigate spatially resolved emission-line ratios in a sample of 219 galaxies (0.6 <
z < 1.3) detected using the G102 grism on the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 taken as part of the CANDELS Lyα Emission at Reionization survey to measure ionization profiles and search for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). We analyze [Oiii ] and Hβ emission-line maps, enabling us to spatially resolve the [Oiii ]/Hβ emission-line ratio across the galaxies in the sample. We compare the [Oiii ]/Hβ ratio in galaxy centers and outer annular regions to measure ionization differences and investigate the potential of sources with nuclear ionization to host AGN. We investigate some of the individual galaxies that are candidates to host strong nuclear ionization and find that they often have low stellar mass and are undetected in X-rays, as expected for low-luminosity AGN in low-mass galaxies. We do not find evidence for a significant population of off-nuclear AGN or other clumps of off-nuclear ionization. We model the observed distribution of [Oiii ]/Hβ spatial profiles and find that most galaxies are consistent with a small or zero difference between their nuclear and off-nuclear line ratios, but 6%–16% of galaxies in the sample are likely to host nuclear [Oiii ]/Hβ that is ∼0.5 dex higher than in their outer regions. This study is limited by large uncertainties in most of the measured [Oiii ]/Hβ spatial profiles; therefore, deeper data, e.g., from deeper HST/WFC3 programs or from JWST/NIRISS, are needed to more reliably measure the spatially resolved emission-line conditions of individual high-redshift galaxies.
