We present VLT/MUSE observations targeting the extended Lyman-α(Lyα) emission of five high-redshift (z ∼ 3-4) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with increasing quasi-stellar object (QSO) radiation: two SMGs; two SMGs that host a QSO; and one SMG that hosts a QSO with an SMG companion (QSO+SMG). These sources are predicted to be located in dark matter halos of comparable masses (average mass ofMDM ∼ 1012.2 M⊙). We quantified the luminosity and extent of the Lyαemission, together with its kinematics, and examined four Lyαpowering mechanisms: photoionization from QSOs or star formation, shocks by galactic and/or QSO outflows, gravitational cooling radiation, and Lyαphoton resonant scattering. We find a variety of Lyαluminosities and extents, with the QSO+SMG system displaying the most extended and bright nebula, followed by the SMGs hosting a QSO, and finally the undetected circumgalactic medium of SMGs. This diversity implies that gravitational cooling is unlikely to be the main powering mechanism. We show that photoionization from the QSO and QSO outflows can contribute to power the emission for average densitiesnH > 0.5 cm−3. Moreover, the observed Lyαluminosities scale with the QSO’s budget of Lyαphotons modulo the dust content in each galaxy, highlighting a possible contribution from resonant scattering of QSO radiation in powering the nebulae. We find larger Lyαlinewidths (FWHM ≳ 1200 km s−1) than usually reported around radio-quiet systems, pointing to large-scale outflows. A statistical survey targeting similar high-redshift massive systems with known host properties is needed to confirm our findings.

H i Lyα Emission from a Metal-poor Cool Stream Fueling an Early Dusty Starburst
Abstract The GAMA J0913−0107 system is a rare conjunction of a submillimeter galaxy (SMG) atz≈ 2.7 and two background QSOs with projected separations <200 kpc. Previous high-resolution QSO absorption-line spectroscopy has revealed high Hicolumn density, extremely metal-poor (∼1% solar) gas streams in the circumgalactic medium of the SMG. Here we present deep optical integral-field spectroscopy of the system with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). Reaching a 2σsurface brightness limit ≈10−19erg s−1cm−2arcsec−2with ∼2 hr of integration time, we detect a filamentary Lyαnebula stretching ∼180 kpc from the SMG intercepting both QSO sightlines. This Lyαfilament may correspond to the same cool gas stream penetrating through the hot halo seen in the absorption. In contrast to Lyαnebulae around QSOs, there is no obvious local source for photoionization due to the massive dust content. While uncertain, we consider the possibility that the nebula is ionized by shocks induced by the infall, obscured star formation, and/or a boosted UV background. The SMG–QSOs conjunction multiplied the efficiency of the KCWI observations, allowing a direct comparison of Lyαnebulae in two distinct environments. We find that the nebulae around the QSOs are much brighter and show steeper surface brightness profiles than the SMG nebula. This is consistent with the additional photoionization and Lyαscattering provided by the QSOs. While illustrating the challenges of detecting Lyαnebulae around SMGs, our work also demonstrates that important insights can be gained from comparative studies of high-zLyαnebulae.

Abstract We present Keck Cosmic Web Imager Lyαintegral field spectroscopy of the fields surrounding 14 damped Lyαabsorbers (DLAs) atz≈ 2. Of these 14 DLAs, nine have high metallicities ([M/H] > − 0.3), and four of those nine feature a CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter ≲30 kpc. Our search reaches median Lyαline flux sensitivities of ∼2 × 10−17erg s−1cm−2over apertures of ∼6 kpc and out to impact parameters of ∼50 kpc. We recover the Lyαflux of three known Lyα-emitting Hi-selected galaxies in our sample. In addition, we find two Lyαemitters at impact parameters of ≈50–70 kpc from the high-metallicity DLA atz≈ 1.96 toward QSO B0551-366. This field also contains a massive CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter of ≈15 kpc. Apart from the field with QSO B0551-366, we do not detect significant Lyαemission in any of the remaining eight high-metallicity DLA fields. Considering the depth of our observations and our ability to recover previously known Lyαemitters, we conclude that Hi-selected galaxies associated with high-metallicity DLAs atz≈ 2 are dusty and therefore might feature low Lyαescape fractions. Our results indicate that complementary approaches—using Lyα, CO, Hα, and [Cii] 158μm emission—are necessary to identify the wide range of galaxy types associated withz≈ 2 DLAs.more » « less

Abstract We present the first results from a program searching for extended Lyαhalos around high-redshift (z ≳ 6.5) quasars using the red channel of the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). Our observations reveal a Lyαhalo extending to ≃11 pkpc around thez= 6.64 broad absorption line quasar J0910−0414. The Lyαvelocity field displays a rotation-like gradient, and the gas velocity dispersion is consistent with gravitationally dominated motion (σLyα < 300 km s−1). Comparison with the [Cii] kinematics of the host galaxy core from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations shows that the Lyα-emitting gas extends over a much larger region, shows distinct kinematics, and has a smaller velocity dispersion (σLyα ≃ 0.6σ[C II]). The Lyαspectral region of the quasar is largely obscured by a deep Nvabsorption trough, and as a result, roughly 55% of the total Lyαflux is from the extended halo. These observations demonstrate the potential of KCWI for probing the cool gas reservoir that fuels the growth of quasars and their hosts in the epoch of reionization.more » « less

Abstract High-velocity outflows are ubiquitous in compact, massive (M*∼ 1011M⊙),z∼ 0.5 galaxies with extreme star formation surface densities (ΣSFR∼ 2000M⊙yr−1kpc−2). We have previously detected and characterized these outflows using Mgiiabsorption lines. To probe their full extent, we present Keck/KCWI integral field spectroscopy of the [Oii] and Mgiiemission nebulae surrounding all of the 12 galaxies in this study. We find that [Oii] is more effective than Mgiiin tracing low surface brightness, extended emission in these galaxies. The [Oii] nebulae are spatially extended beyond the stars, with radial extentR90between 10 and 40 kpc. The nebulae exhibit nongravitational motions, indicating galactic outflows with maximum blueshifted velocities ranging from −335 to −1920 km s−1. The outflow kinematics correlate with the bursty star formation histories of these galaxies. Galaxies with the most recent bursts of star formation (within the last <3 Myr) exhibit the highest central velocity dispersions (σ≳ 400 km s−1), while the oldest bursts have the lowest-velocity outflows. Many galaxies exhibit both high-velocity cores and more extended, slower-moving gas indicative of multiple outflow episodes. The slower, larger outflows occurred earlier and have decelerated as they propagate into the circumgalactic medium and mix on timescales ≳50 Myr.more » « less

Abstract It has been well established in the local universe that galaxy properties differ based on the large-scale environment in which they reside. As luminous Lyαnebulae have been shown to trace overdense environments atz∼ 2–3, comparing the properties of galaxies within Lyαnebulae systems to those in the field can provide insight into how and when locally observed trends between galaxy properties and environment emerged. Six Lyαnebulae were discovered atz∼ 2.3 in a blind search of the GOODS-S extragalactic field, a region also covered by the 3D-HST spectroscopic survey. Utilizing 3D-HST data, we identified 86 galaxies in the vicinity of these nebulae and used statistical tests to compare their physical properties to galaxies elsewhere in the field. Galaxies lying within 320 proper kpc of a Lyαnebula are roughly half a magnitude brighter than those in the field, with higher stellar masses, higher star formation rates, and larger effective radii. Even when considering the effects of sample incompleteness, our study suggests that galaxies in overdensities atz∼ 2.3 traced by Lyαnebulae are being influenced by their environment. Furthermore, Lyα-nebula-associated galaxies lie on the same main sequence of star formation as field galaxies but have a larger proportion of high-mass galaxies, consistent with the idea that galaxy evolution is accelerated in rich environments. Expanded surveys for Lyαnebulae in other deep extragalactic fields and galaxy spectroscopic follow-up with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will better constrain the demographics of Lyα-nebula-associated galaxies.more » « less
