The electrodeposition of Ru was investigated from solutions of ruthenium(III) nitrosyl sulfate and ruthenium(III) chloride onto seed layers of epitaxial and polycrystalline Ru and epitaxial Au. Using both galvanostatic and potentiostatic deposition modes, metallic Ru was found to electrodeposit as a porous layer comprised of (0001) oriented Ru crystallites, the presence of which was discovered and confirmed by X-ray and scanning transmission and transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) analyses. This finding was independent of the Ru salt and seed layer used. Using X-ray reflectivity (XRR), the average film density of the porous electrodeposited Ru layer was measured as less than the density of bulk Ru (14.414 g cm−3). Increasing the magnitude of the applied current density from −100μA cm−2to −10 mA cm−2in solutions of Ru nitrosyl sulfate increased the from 7.4 g cm−3to 9.7 g cm−2while the current efficiency decreased from 9.4% to 4.3%.

Performance of empirical and model-based classifiers for detecting sucrase-isomaltase inhibition using the 13 C-sucrose breath test
Abstract The13C-sucrose breath test (13C-SBT) has been proposed to estimate sucrase-isomaltase (SIM) activity and is a promising test for SIM deficiency, which can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, and for intestinal mucosal damage caused by gut dysfunction or chemotherapy. We previously showed how various summary measures of the13C-SBT breath curve reflect SIM inhibition. However, it is uncertain how the performance of these classifiers is affected by test duration. We leveraged13C-SBT data from a cross-over study in 16 adults who received 0, 100, and 750 mg of Reducose, an SIM inhibitor. We evaluated the performance of a pharmacokinetic-model-based classifier, , and three empirical classifiers (cumulative percent dose recovered at 90 min (cPDR90), time to 50% dose recovered, and time to peak dose recovery rate), as a function of test duration using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. We also assessed the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of consensus classifiers. Test durations of less than 2 h generally failed to accurately predict later breath curve dynamics. The cPDR90 classifier had the highest ROC area-under-the-curve and, by design, was robust to shorter test durations. For detecting mild SIM inhibition, had a higher sensitivity. We recommend13C-SBT tests run for at least a 2 h duration. Although cPDR90 was the classifier with highest accuracy and robustness to test duration in this application, concerns remain about its sensitivity to misspecification of the CO2production rate. More research is needed to assess these classifiers in target populations.

Abstract The polarization of the cosmic microwave background is rich in information but obscured by foreground emission from the Milky Way’s interstellar medium (ISM). To uncover relationships between the underlying turbulent ISM and the foreground power spectra, we simulated a suite of driven, magnetized, turbulent models of the ISM, varying the fluid properties via the sonic Mach number, , and magnetic (Alfvén) Mach number, . We measure the power spectra of density (ρ), velocity (v), magnetic field (H), total projected intensity (T), parity-even polarization (E), and parity-odd polarization (B). We find that the slopes of all six quantities increase with . Most increase with , while the magnetic field spectrum steepens with . By comparing spectral slopes ofEandBto those measured by Planck, we infer typical values of and for the ISM. As the fluid velocity increases, , the ratio of BB power to EE power increases to approach a constant value near the Planck-observed value of ∼0.5, regardless of the magnetic field strength. We also examine correlation coefficients between projected quantities, and find thatrTE≈ 0.3, in agreement with Planck, for appropriate combinations of and . Abstract M dwarfs are common host stars to exoplanets but often lack atmospheric abundance measurements. Late-M dwarfs are also good analogs to the youngest substellar companions, which share similarTeff∼ 2300–2800 K. We present atmospheric analyses for the M7.5 companion HIP 55507 B and its K6V primary star with Keck/KPIC high-resolution (R∼ 35,000)K-band spectroscopy. First, by including KPIC relative radial velocities between the primary and secondary in the orbit fit, we improve the dynamical mass precision by 60% and find , putting HIP 55507 B above the stellar–substellar boundary. We also find that HIP 55507 B orbits its K6V primary star with au ande= 0.40 ± 0.04. From atmospheric retrievals of HIP 55507 B, we measure [C/H] = 0.24 ± 0.13, [O/H] = 0.15 ± 0.13, and C/O = 0.67 ± 0.04. Moreover, we strongly detect13CO (7.8σsignificance) and tentatively detect (3.7σsignificance) in the companion’s atmosphere and measure and after accounting for systematic errors. From a simplified retrieval analysis of HIP 55507 A, we measure and for the primary star. These results demonstrate that HIP 55507 A and B have consistent12C/13C and16O/18O to the <1σlevel, as expected for a chemically homogeneous binary system. Given the similar flux ratios and separations between HIP 55507 AB and systems with young substellar companions, our results open the door to systematically measuring13CO and abundances in the atmospheres of substellar or even planetary-mass companions with similar spectral types.more » « less

Abstract We present13CO(J= 1 → 0) observations for the EDGE-CALIFA survey, which is a mapping survey of 126 nearby galaxies at a typical spatial resolution of 1.5 kpc. Using detected12CO emission as a prior, we detect13CO in 41 galaxies via integrated line flux over the entire galaxy and in 30 galaxies via integrated line intensity in resolved synthesized beams. Incorporating our CO observations and optical IFU spectroscopy, we perform a systematic comparison between the line ratio and the properties of the stars and ionized gas. Higher values are found in interacting galaxies compared to those in noninteracting galaxies. The global slightly increases with infrared colorF60/F100but appears insensitive to other host-galaxy properties such as morphology, stellar mass, or galaxy size. We also present azimuthally averaged profiles for our sample up to a galactocentric radius of 0.4r25(∼6 kpc), taking into account the13CO nondetections by spectral stacking. The radial profiles of are quite flat across our sample. Within galactocentric distances of 0.2r25, the azimuthally averaged increases with the star formation rate. However, Spearman rank correlation tests show the azimuthally averaged does not strongly correlate with any other gas or stellar properties in general, especially beyond 0.2r25from the galaxy centers. Our findings suggest that in the complex environments in galaxy disks, is not a sensitive tracer for ISM properties. Dynamical disturbances, like galaxy interactions or the presence of a bar, also have an overall impact on , which further complicates the interpretations of variations.more » « less
