Abstract A self‐assembled FeII4L6cage was synthesized with 12 internal amines in the cavity. The cage forms as the dodeca‐ammonium salt, despite the cage carrying an overall 8+ charge at the metal centers, extracting protons from displaced water in the reaction. Despite this, the basicity of the internal amines is lower than their counterparts in free solution. The 12 amines have a sliding scale of basicity, with a ≈6 pKaunit difference between the first and last protons to be removed. This moderation of side‐chain basicity in an active site is a hallmark of enzymatic catalysis.

Abstract Silyloxyarenes were utilized as electrophilic coupling partners with amines in the synthesis of aniline derivatives. A diverse range of amine substrates were used, including cyclic or acyclic secondary amines, secondary anilines, and sterically hindered primary anilines. Additionally, a range of sterically hindered and unhindered primary aliphatic amines were employed, which have previously been challenging with other classes of aryl ether electrophiles. Orthogonal couplings of silyloxyarenes with aryl methyl ethers are illustrated, where selectivity between the two C−O electrophiles is determined by ligand control, thereby allowing complementary and selective late‐stage diversification of either electrophile. Finally, a sequential coupling displays the utility of this amination method along with the reversal in intrinsic reactivity between aryl methyl ethers and silyloxyarenes.more » « less

Abstract Results pertaining to the mechanism of the oxidation of the tertiary amine 1‐methyl‐4‐(1‐methyl‐1‐H‐pyrrol‐2‐yl)‐1,2,3,6‐tetrahydropyridine (MMTP, a close analog of the Parkinsonism inducing compound MPTP) by 3‐methyllumiflavin (3MLF), a chemical model for the FAD cofactor of monoamine oxidase, are reported. MMTP and related compounds are among the few tertiary amines that are monoamine oxidase B (MAO−B) substrates. The MMTP/3MLF reaction is catalytic in the presence of O2and the results under anaerobic conditions strongly suggest the involvement of radical intermediates, consistent with a single electron transfer mechanism. These observations support a new hypothesis to explain the MAO‐catalyzed oxidations of amines. In general, electron transfer is thermodynamically unfavorable, and as a result, most 1° and 2° amines react via one of the currently accepted polar pathways. Steric constraints prevent 3° amines from reacting via a polar pathway. Those select 3° amines that are MAO substrates possess certain structural features (e. g., a C−H bond that is α‐ both to nitrogen and a C=C) that dramatically lower the pKaof the corresponding radical cation. Consequently, the thermodynamically unfavorable electron transfer equilibrium is driven towards products by an extremely favorable deprotonation step in the context of Le Chatelier's principle.more » « less

The reaction of primary amines with In 37 P 20 (O 2 CR) 51 is found to remove In(O 2 CR) 3 subunits from In 37 P 20 (O 2 CR) 51 . This loss of Z-type ligands coincides with structural rearrangement to alleviate core strain and passivate phosphorus atoms. This result consolidates conflicting claims that primary amines both promote and retard precursor conversion rates for InP nanocrystals.more » « less

Aliphatic allylic amines are found in a great variety of complex and biorelevant molecules. The direct allylic C–H amination of alkenes serves as the most straightforward method toward these motifs. However, use of widely available internal alkenes with aliphatic amines in this transformation remains a synthetic challenge. In particular, palladium catalysis faces the twin challenges of inefficient coordination of Pd(II) to internal alkenes but excessively tight and therefore inhibitory coordination of Pd(II) by basic aliphatic amines. We report a general solution to these problems. The developed protocol, in contrast to a classical Pd(II/0) scenario, operates through a blue light–induced Pd(0/I/II) manifold with mild aryl bromide oxidant. This open-shell approach also enables enantio- and diastereoselective allylic C–H amination.more » « less
