Context.Accurate42Ti(p,γ)43V reaction rates are crucial for understanding the nucleosynthesis path of the rapid capture process (rpprocess) that occurs in X-ray bursts. Aims.We aim to improve the thermonuclear rates of42Ti(p,γ)43V based on more complete resonance information and a more accurate direct component, together with the recently released nuclear masses data. We also explore the impact of the newly obtained rates on therpprocess. Methods. We reevaluated the reaction rate of42Ti(p,γ)43V by the sum of the isolated resonance contribution instead of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. We used a Monte Carlo method to derive the associated uncertainties of new rates. The nucleosynthesis simulations were performed via the NuGrid post-processing code ppn. Results. The new rates differ from previous estimations due to the use of a series of updated resonance parameters and a direct S factor. Compared with the previous results from the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model, which assumes compound nucleus43V with a sufficiently high-level density in the energy region of astrophysical interest, large differences exist over the entire temperature region ofrp-process interest, up to two orders of magnitude. We consistently calculated the photodisintegration rate using our new nuclear masses via the detailed balance principle, and found the discrepancies among the different reverse rates are much larger than those for the forward rate, up to ten orders of magnitude at the temperature of 108K. Using a trajectory with a peak temperature of 1.95×109K, we performed therp-process nucleosynthesis simulations to investigate the impact of the new rates. Our calculations show that the adoption of the new forward and reverse rates result in abundance variations for Sc and Ca of 128% and 49%, respectively, compared to the variations for the statistical model rates. On the other hand, the overall abundance pattern is not significantly affected. The results of using new rates also confirm that therp-process path does not bypass the isotope43V. Conclusions. Our study found that the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model is inappropriate to the reaction rate evaluation for42Ti(p,γ)43V. The adoption of the new rates confirms that the reaction path of42Ti(p,γ)43V(p,γ)44Cr(β+)44V is a key branch of therpprocess in X-ray bursts.

Thermonuclear 28 P(p, γ ) 29 S reaction rate and astrophysical implication in ONe nova explosion
Context. An accurate28P(p,γ)29S reaction rate is crucial to defining the nucleosynthesis products of explosive hydrogen burning in ONe novae. Using the recently released nuclear mass of29S, together with a shell model and a direct capture calculation, we reanalyzed the28P(p,γ)29S thermonuclear reaction rate and its astrophysical implication. Aims.We focus on improving the astrophysical rate for28P(p,γ)29S based on the newest nuclear mass data. Our goal is to explore the impact of the new rate and associated uncertainties on the nova nucleosynthesis. Methods. We evaluated this reaction rate via the sum of the isolated resonance contribution instead of the previously used Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. The corresponding rate uncertainty at different energies was derived using a Monte Carlo method. Nova nucleosynthesis is computed with the 1D hydrodynamic code SHIVA. Results. The contribution from the capture on the first excited state at 105.64 keV in28P is taken into account for the first time. We find that the capture rate on the first excited state in28P is up to more than 12 times larger than the ground-state capture rate in the temperature region of 2.5 × 107K to 4 × 108K, resulting in the total28P(p,γ)29S reaction rate being enhanced by a factor of up to 1.4 at ~1 × 109K. In addition, the rate uncertainty has been quantified for the first time. It is found that the new rate is smaller than the previous statistical model rates, but it still agrees with them within uncertainties for nova temperatures. The statistical model appears to be roughly valid for the rate estimation of this reaction in the nova nucleosynthesis scenario. Using the 1D hydrodynamic code SHIVA, we performed the nucleosynthesis calculations in a nova explosion to investigate the impact of the new rates of28P(p,γ)29S. Our calculations show that the nova abundance pattern is only marginally affected if we use our new rates with respect to the same simulations but statistical model rates. Finally, the isotopes whose abundance is most influenced by the present28P(p,γ)29S uncertainty are28Si,33,34S,35,37Cl, and36Ar, with relative abundance changes at the level of only 3% to 4%.

New 26 P(p, γ) 27 S Thermonuclear Reaction Rate and Its Astrophysical Implications in the rp-processAbstract Accurate nuclear reaction rates for 26 P( p , γ ) 27 S are pivotal for a comprehensive understanding of the rp -process nucleosynthesis path in the region of proton-rich sulfur and phosphorus isotopes. However, large uncertainties still exist in the current rate of 26 P( p , γ ) 27 S because of the lack of nuclear mass and energy level structure information for 27 S. We reevaluate this reaction rate using the experimentally constrained 27 S mass, together with the shell model predicted level structure. It is found that the 26 P( p , γ ) 27 S reaction rate is dominated by a direct capture reaction mechanism despite the presence of three resonances at E = 1.104, 1.597, and 1.777 MeV above the proton threshold in 27 S. The new rate is overall smaller than the other previous rates from the Hauser–Feshbach statistical model by at least 1 order of magnitude in the temperature range of X-ray burst interest. In addition, we consistently update the photodisintegration rate using the new 27 S mass. The influence of new rates of forward and reverse reaction in the abundances of isotopes produced in the rp -process is explored by postprocessing nucleosynthesis calculations. The final abundance ratio of 27 S/ 26 P obtained using the new rates is only 10% of that from the old rate. The abundance flow calculations show that the reaction path 26 P( p , γ ) 27 S( β + , ν ) 27 P is not as important as previously thought for producing 27 P. The adoption of the new reaction rates for 26 P( p , γ ) 27 S only reduces the final production of aluminum by 7.1% and has no discernible impact on the yield of other elements.more » « less

Abstract We reassess the 65 As(p, γ ) 66 Se reaction rates based on a set of proton thresholds of 66 Se, S p ( 66 Se), estimated from the experimental mirror nuclear masses, theoretical mirror displacement energies, and full p f -model space shell-model calculation. The self-consistent relativistic Hartree–Bogoliubov theory is employed to obtain the mirror displacement energies with much reduced uncertainty, and thus reducing the proton-threshold uncertainty up to 161 keV compared to the AME2020 evaluation. Using the simulation instantiated by the one-dimensional multi-zone hydrodynamic code, K epler , which closely reproduces the observed GS 1826−24 clocked bursts, the present forward and reverse 65 As(p, γ ) 66 Se reaction rates based on a selected S p ( 66 Se) = 2.469 ± 0.054 MeV, and the latest 22 Mg( α ,p) 25 Al, 56 Ni(p, γ ) 57 Cu, 57 Cu(p, γ ) 58 Zn, 55 Ni(p, γ ) 56 Cu, and 64 Ge(p, γ ) 65 As reaction rates, we find that though the GeAs cycles are weakly established in the rapid-proton capture process path, the 65 As(p, γ ) 66 Se reaction still strongly characterizes the burst tail end due to the two-proton sequential capture on 64 Ge, not found by the Cyburt et al. sensitivity study. The 65 As(p, γ ) 66 Se reaction influences the abundances of nuclei A = 64, 68, 72, 76, and 80 up to a factor of 1.4. The new S p ( 66 Se) and the inclusion of the updated 22 Mg( α ,p) 25 Al reaction rate increases the production of 12 C up to a factor of 4.5, which is not observable and could be the main fuel for a superburst. The enhancement of the 12 C mass fraction alleviates the discrepancy in explaining the origin of the superburst. The waiting point status of and two-proton sequential capture on 64 Ge, the weak-cycle feature of GeAs at a region heavier than 64 Ge, and the impact of other possible S p ( 66 Se) are also discussed.more » « less

Liu, W.; Wang, Y.; Guo, B.; Tang, X.; Zeng, S. (Ed.)In Type-I X-ray bursts (XRBs), the rapid-proton capture (rp-) process passes through the NiCu and ZnGa cycles before reaching the region above Ge and Se isotopes that hydrogen burning actively powers the XRBs. The sensitivity study performed by Cyburt et al . [1] shows that the 57 Cu(p, γ ) 58 Zn reaction in the NiCu cycles is the fifth most important rp-reaction influencing the burst light curves. Langer et al . [2] precisely measured some low-lying energy levels of 58 Zn to deduce the 57 Cu(p, γ ) 58 Zn reaction rate. Nevertheless, the order of the 1 + 1 and 2 + 3 resonance states that dominate at 0:2 ≲ T (GK) ≲ 0:8 is not confirmed. The 1 + 2 resonance state, which dominates at the XRB sensitive temperature regime 0:8 ≲ T (GK) ≲ 2 was not detected. Using isobaric-multipletmass equation (IMME), we estimate the order of the 1 + 1 and 2 + 3 resonance states and estimate the lower limit of the 1 + 2 resonance energy. We then determine the 57 Cu(p, γ ) 58 Zn reaction rate using the full pf -model space shell model calculations. The new rate is up to a factor of four lower than the Forstner et al . [3] rate recommended by JINA REACLIBv2.2. Using the present 57 Cu(p, γ ) 58 Zn, the latest 56 Ni(p, γ ) 57 Cu and 55 Ni(p, γ ) 56 Cu reaction rates, and 1D implicit hydrodynamic K epler code, we model the thermonuclear XRBs of the clocked burster GS 1826–24. We find that the new rates regulate the reaction flow in the NiCu cycles and strongly influence the burst-ash composition. The 59 Cu(p, γ ) 56 Ni and 59 Cu(p, α ) 60 Zn reactions suppress the influence of the 57 Cu(p, γ ) 58 Zn reaction. They strongly diminish the impact of the nuclear reaction flow that bypasses the 56 Ni waiting point induced by the 55 Ni(p, γ ) 56 Cu reaction on burst light curve.more » « less

Abstract The observation ofγrays from the decay of44Ti in the remnants of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) provides crucial information regarding the nucleosynthesis occurring in these events, as44Ti production is sensitive to CCSNe conditions. The final abundance of44Ti is also sensitive to specific nuclear input parameters, one of which is the57Ni(p,γ)58Cu reaction rate. A precise rate for57Ni(p,γ)58Cu is thus critical if44Ti production is to be an effective probe into CCSNe. To experimentally constrain the57Ni(p,γ)58Cu rate, the structure properties of58Cu were measured via the58Ni(3He,t)58Cu*(γ) reaction using GODDESS (GRETINA ORRUBA Dual Detectors for Experimental Structure Studies) at Argonne National Laboratory’s ATLAS facility. Details of the experiment, ongoing analysis, and plans are presented.more » « less
