This study examined the impact of a National Science Foundation-funded support program for academically promising STEM students from low-income backgrounds. The program operates as a collaborative consortium, bringing together three public community colleges and one private university, to support the retention and graduation of program scholars. Using propensity score matching, we compared 169 program scholars to 169 matched non-scholars with similar demographic, academic, and financial characteristics ( Mage = 24.82 years; 41% female; 60% students of color). Participation in the program was associated with favorable academic outcomes, with large to moderate effect sizes. Specifically, program scholars had significantly higher cumulative and STEM-specific grade point averages than their non-scholar counterparts. They also completed significantly more STEM courses and were less likely to withdraw from college than non-scholars. These findings underscore the potential of comprehensive and equity-oriented approaches to STEM education in facilitating academic success for STEM students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.

Leveraging Cultural Wealth, Identities and Motivation: How Diverse Intersectional Groups of Low-Income Undergraduate STEM Students Persist in Collegiate STEM Environments
Grounded in a conceptual framework incorporating intersectionality, motivation, self-determination, and self-efficacy, this empirical study investigated how individuals’ identities, mindsets, and resources in educational environments intentionally cultivated to support their decision-making, development, and connections in the science community, can significantly increase the recruitment, persistence, and success of low-income, academically talented science students from diverse backgrounds. Several factors—academic performance in coursework, self-image, self-agency, financial support, and social integration in the science culture—continue to significantly impact student retention and persistence in STEM disciplines. Many of these factors are negatively affected based on a students’ intersecting identities, which can be detrimental to their academic success if not addressed. We found that additional considerations to factor in concerning low-income students from diverse backgrounds that is pertinent to supporting their persistence and success in the postsecondary STEM educational context.

Abstract Persistence across undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs is exceptionally low. Recent studies have shown that social support and sense of belonging are particularly important for students who are historically underrepresented in STEM, yet few interventions have directly targeted or investigated these factors. This qualitative study investigates low‐income, high‐achieving undergraduate STEM students' perceptions of their belonging in the context of a 2‐year peer social support group intervention. Interview analysis of 11 participants demonstrates that these STEM students attribute their sense of belonging to feelings or displays of comfort, commonality, community, and concerted effort. The peer group facilitated increases in participants' social support and sense of belonging by allowing participants to build friendships, recognize shared experiences, connect to their campus, build confidence with peers, and feel supported in their non‐academic and academic struggles. Although the program's main objective was to build participants' sense of belonging, the social support provided through the peer group also acted as a mechanism for increasing information‐related social capital. We recommend the implementation of similar non‐academic, supportive social spaces to increase the sense of belonging and overall persistence of low‐income STEM students.more » « less

This paper examines the impact of a National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (NSF S-STEM) Program at a large, Minority-Serving institution in the western U.S. Despite growing efforts to diversify STEM fields, underrepresented minority (URM) students continue to face significant challenges in persistence and success. This scholarship program addresses these challenges by providing financial support, faculty and peer mentorship, and skills development opportunities to academically talented and low-income URM STEM students. This study evaluates how participation in the program enhances key noncognitive skills, such as students' sense of belonging, leadership and collaboration skills, and science identity, which are critical to STEM persistence. Using both survey and university-based data among the 47 participating scholars, results reveal that program participants report strong levels of sense of belonging, high efficacy in leadership and collaboration skills, and strong science/math identities. Additionally, compared to university rates, scholarship students showed above-average retention and graduation rates, with the majority pursuing graduate studies or careers in STEM. These findings highlight the importance of comprehensive support programs that integrate financial aid, mentorship, and professional development to promote persistence and success among URM students in STEM fields.more » « less

To date, success in STEM has been primarily measured via grade point averages, retention in STEM programs, as well as obtaining STEM degrees and careers. Here we consider choice and autonomy to explore varied academic options in determining success, as the development of interest is dynamic and sometimes fluid; it changes with the environment and is shaped by new learning and exposure to career pathways. In this paper, we report on a qualitative evaluation of a S-STEM pilot program for two cohorts of underrepresented, low-income undergraduate students as a case illustration of alternative framings of success in STEM. We found the program boosted self-efficacy, STEM identity, academic sense of belonging, and confidence. Importantly, focus group data captured a key nuanced theme from student responses: that pathways for exploration to redefine and refine interests were key to their success and reported positive academic experiences. We present these findings as evidence for a more contextually appropriate definition of success that takes situational contexts and individual differences into account. We discuss the ways in which we can continue to provide diverse students with resources, support, and mentorship with this definition of success in mind.more » « less

The attrition rate at the undergraduate level for STEM fields is a disappointing 48%, and this is even higher for low-income students. Approximately only 11% of students who identify as low-income earn an undergraduate degree within six years, while 58% of students from higher income backgrounds earn their undergraduate degree within the same timeframe. The high attrition rates coupled with the already existing low enrollment is adversely affecting the country’s economy as the supply of degreed professionals is not keeping up with demand. The academic persistence of a student is a critical factor in determining if a student decides to remain in a certain major or not. Researchers have concluded that enhancing the self-efficacy of a student results improves academic persistence which may positively influence retention. This study investigates the effect of autonomous, project-based learning on self-efficacy for 15 financially disadvantaged students. The learning experience was constructed such that all four sources of self-efficacy viz. mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasions, and physiological states were incorporated. Results indicate that the experience had a positive effect on the students’ perceived self-efficacy. Each student believed that these played a major role in the success of the project and that their success was very much deserved.more » « less
