Title: Bis(diisobutylammonium) tetrachloridobis[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]stannate
The asymmetric unit in the title salt, (C8H20N)2[SnCl4(C7H4Cl2F3)2], features a di-isobutylammonium cation in a general position and a diorganotin tetrachloride dianion,i.e. tetrachloridobis(3-trifuoromethylphenyl)stannate(IV), located on a centre of inversion; the SnIVatom is octahedrally coordinated. In the crystal, charge-assisted N+—H...Cl hydrogen bonds along with C—H...F contacts occur within supramolecular layers that interdigitate along thea-axis direction.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Searching for a connection between the two‐electron redox behavior of Group‐14 elements and their possible use as platforms for the photoreductive elimination of chlorine, we have studied the photochemistry of [(o‐(Ph2P)C6H4)2GeIVCl2]PtIICl2and [(o‐(Ph2P)C6H4)2ClGeIII]PtIIICl3, two newly isolated isomeric complexes. These studies show that, in the presence of a chlorine trap, both isomers convert cleanly into the platinum germyl complex [(o‐(Ph2P)C6H4)2ClGeIII]PtICl with quantum yields of 1.7 % and 3.2 % for the GeIV–PtIIand GeIII–PtIIIisomers, respectively. Conversion of the GeIV–PtIIisomer into the platinum germyl complex is a rare example of a light‐induced transition‐metal/main‐group‐element bond‐forming process. Finally, transient‐absorption‐spectroscopy studies carried out on the GeIII–PtIIIisomer point to a ligand arene–Cl.charge‐transfer complex as an intermediate.

  2. Abstract A new series of mono‐ and bis‐alkynyl CoIII(TIM) complexes (TIM=2,3,9,10‐tetramethyl‐1,4,8,11‐tetraazacyclotetradeca‐1,3,8,10‐tetraene) is reported herein. Thetrans‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)Cl]+complexes were prepared from the reaction betweentrans‐[Co(TIM)Cl2]PF6and HC2R (R=tri(isopropyl)silyl or TIPS (1), ‐C6H4‐4‐tBu (2), ‐C6H4‐4‐NO2(3 a), andN‐mesityl‐1,8‐naphthalimide or NAPMes(4 a)) in the presence of Et3N. The intermediate complexes of the typetrans‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)(NCMe)](PF6)(OTf),3 band4 b, were obtained by treating3 aand4 a, respectively, with AgOTf in CH3CN. Furthermore, bis‐alkynyltrans‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)2]PF6complexes,3 cand4 c, were generated following a second dehydrohalogenation reaction between3 band4 b, respectively, and the appropriate HC2R in the presence of Et3N. These new complexes have been characterized using X‐ray diffraction (2,3 a,4 a, and4 c), IR,1H NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, fluorescent spectroscopy (4 c), and cyclic voltammetry.

  3. 2,4,6-Triaminopyrimidine is an interesting and challenging molecule due to the presence of multiple hydrogen-bond donors and acceptors. Its noncovalent interactions with a variety of carboxylic acids provide several supramolecular aggregates with frequently occurring molecular synthons. The present work focuses on the supramolecular interactions of 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidinium 3-(indol-3-yl)propionate–3-(indol-3-yl)propionic acid (1/1), C4H8N5+·C11H10NO2·C11H11NO2, (I), 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidinium 2-(indol-3-yl)acetate, C4H8N5+·C10H8NO2, (II), 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidinium 5-bromothiophene-2-carboxylate, C4H8N5+·C5H2BrO2S, (III), and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidinium 5-chlorothiophene-2-carboxylate, C4H8N5+·C5H2ClO2S, (IV). All four salts exhibit robust homomeric and heteromericR22(8) ring motifs. Salts (I) and (II) develop sextuple [in (I)] and quadruple [in (I) and (II)] hydrogen-bonded arrays through fused-ring motifs. Salt (II) exhibits a rosette-like architecture. Salt (IV) is isostructural and isomorphous with salt (III), exhibiting an identical crystal structure with a different composition and an identical supramolecular architecture. In salts (III) and (IV), a linear hetero-tetrameric motif is formed and, in addition, both salts exhibit halogen–π interactions which enhance the crystal stability. All four salts develop a supramolecular hydrogen-bonded pattern facilitated by several N—H...O and N—H...N hydrogen bonds with multiple furcated donors and acceptors.

  4. Abstract The dialkyl malonate derived 1,3‐diphosphines R2C(CH2PPh2)2(R=a, Me;b, Et;c,n‐Bu;d,n‐Dec;e, Bn;f,p‐tolCH2) are combined with (p‐tol3P)2PtCl2ortrans‐(p‐tol3P)2Pt((C≡C)2H)2to give the chelatescis‐(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)PtCl2(2 a–f, 94–69 %) orcis‐(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)Pt((C≡C)2H)2(3 a–f, 97–54 %). Complexes3 a–dare also available from2 a–dand excess 1,3‐butadiyne in the presence of CuI (cat.) and excess HNEt2(87–65 %). Under similar conditions,2and3react to give the title compounds [(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)[Pt(C≡C)2]4(4 a–f; 89–14 % (64 % avg)), from which ammonium salts such as the co‐product [H2NEt2]+Clare challenging to remove. Crystal structures of4 a,bshow skew rhombus as opposed to square Pt4geometries. The NMR and IR properties of4 a–fare similar to those of mono‐ or diplatinum model compounds. However, cyclic voltammetry gives only irreversible oxidations. As compared to mono‐platinum or Pt(C≡C)2Pt species, the UV‐visible spectra show much more intense and red‐shifted bands. Time dependent DFT calculations define the transitions and principal orbitals involved. Electrostatic potential surface maps reveal strongly negative Pt4C16cores that likely facilitate ammonium cation binding. Analogous electronic properties of Pt3C12and Pt5C20homologs and selected equilibria are explored computationally.

  5. The functionalization of methane, ethane, and other alkanes derived from fossil fuels is a central goal in the chemical enterprise. Recently, a photocatalytic system comprising [CeIVCl5(OR)]2−[CeIV, cerium(IV); OR, –OCH3or –OCCl2CH3] was disclosed. The system was reportedly capable of alkane activation by alkoxy radicals (RO•) formed by CeIV–OR bond photolysis. In this work, we present evidence that the reported carbon-hydrogen (C–H) activation of alkanes is instead mediated by the photocatalyst [NEt4]2[CeCl6] (NEt4+, tetraethylammonium), and RO• are not intermediates. Spectroscopic analyses and kinetics were investigated for C–H activation to identify chlorine radical (Cl•) generation as the rate-limiting step. Density functional theory calculations support the formation of [Cl•][alcohol] adducts when alcohols are present, which can manifest a masked RO• character. This result serves as an important cautionary note for interpretation of radical trapping experiments.
