Nuclear medium effects on meson production are studied using the binary-collision scaled cross section ratio between events of different charged-particle multiplicities from proton-lead collisions. Data, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of , were used. The scaling factors in the ratio are determined using a novel approach based on the cross sections measured in the same events. The scaled ratio for is consistent with unity for all event multiplicities, putting stringent constraints on nuclear modification for heavy flavor. © 2025 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2025CERN

Absence of E2g Nematic Instability and Dominant A1g Response in the Kagome Metal CsV3Sb5
Ever since the discovery of the charge density wave (CDW) transition in the kagome metal , the nature of its symmetry breaking has been under intense debate. While evidence suggests that the rotational symmetry is already broken at the CDW transition temperature ( ), an additional electronic nematic instability well below has been reported based on the diverging elastoresistivity coefficient in the anisotropic channel ( ). Verifying the existence of a nematic transition below is not only critical for establishing the correct description of the CDW order parameter, but also important for understanding low-temperature superconductivity. Here, we report elastoresistivity measurements of using three different techniques probing both isotropic and anisotropic symmetry channels. Contrary to previous reports, we find the anisotropic elastoresistivity coefficient is temperature independent, except for a step jump at . The absence of nematic fluctuations is further substantiated by measurements of the elastocaloric effect, which show no enhancement associated with nematic susceptibility. On the other hand, the symmetric elastoresistivity coefficient increases below , reaching a peak value of 90 at . Our results strongly indicate that the phase transition at is not nematic in nature and the previously reported diverging elastoresistivity is due to the contamination from the channel. The first observation of the concurrent production of two mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of . The two mesons are reconstructed in their decay channels with transverse momenta and rapidity . Events where one of the mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields and , respectively. The first results of the study of high-energy electron neutrino ( ) and muon neutrino ( ) charged-current interactions in the emulsion-tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC are presented. A 128.8 kg subset of the volume was analyzed after exposure to of data. Four (eight) ( ) interaction candidate events are observed with a statistical significance of ( ). This is the first direct observation of interactions at a particle collider and includes the highest-energy and ever detected from an artificial source. The interaction cross section per nucleon is measured over an energy range of 560–1740 GeV (520–1760 GeV) for ( ) to be [ ], consistent with standard model predictions. The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high ) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at . A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter , 0.4, and 0.5 in the range and trigger-recoil jet azimuthal separation . The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low and at large azimuthal deviation from . The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on , which has a slope that differs from zero by . Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. In the bottomonium sector, the hindered magnetic dipole transitions between P-wave states , , 1, 2, are expected to be severely suppressed according to the relativized quark model, due to the spin flip of the quark. Nevertheless, a recent model following the coupled-channel approach predicts the corresponding branching fractions to be enhanced by orders of magnitude. In this Letter, we report the first search for such transitions. We find no significant signals and set upper limits at 90% confidence level on the corresponding branching fractions: , and . These values help to constrain the parameters of the coupled-channel models. The results are obtained using a data sample taken around with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider.
