This study examined whether connecting storytelling and tinkering can advance early STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning opportunities for children. A total of 62 families with 4- to 10-year-old ( M = 8.03) children were observed via Zoom. They watched a video invitation to tinker at home prepared by museum educators prior to tinkering. Then, half of the families were prompted to think up a story before tinkering (story-based tinkering group), whereas the other half were simply asked to begin tinkering (no-story group). Once they had finished tinkering, researchers elicited children’s reflections about their tinkering experience. A subset of the families ( n = 45) also reminisced about their tinkering experience several weeks later. The story instructions provided before tinkering engendered children’s storytelling during tinkering and when reflecting on the experience. Children in the story-based tinkering group also talked the most about STEM both during tinkering, and subsequently when reminiscing with their parents about their tinkering experience.

Storytelling With and About Data: Mapping the Terrain
“Data storytelling” is described in a variety of ways in literature, and even within the same project what constitutes a “data story” can vary among learners. These different treatments are likely to support different engagements with data, and therefore different learning opportunities for students. Here, we describe preliminary efforts to characterize the variety of ways in which data stories may differ in their mode (e.g., story about work with data and story about the data’s implications) and in their features (e.g., attention to data source; attention to history; case vs aggregate reasoning). To illustrate, we present an analysis of two data story artifacts produced by adolescents that participated in the same data storytelling workshop focused on health and the environment.

Interactive Cartographic Storytelling with Complex Spatio-Temporal Structures and Social ConnectionsIn this paper, we describe the design of an interactive cartographic storytelling platform for the 1906 Atlanta Race Massacre, a horrific incident that had a profound impact on the civil and human rights movement in the United States. This four-day event happened at various locations in downtown Atlanta and involved many people. Although multiple books and articles have been written about the 1906 Atlanta Race Massacre, they described the past events using conventional storytelling methods. We want to tell this story from a cartographic perspective because the locations are essential to this story. We also want to connect the past with the present because most people walking on the same streets today do not know the history and significance of the locations. Furthermore, most people are unaware that some major institutions are intricately connected to the people involved in the 1906 events. Telling the story this way requires us to handle a complex spatio-temporal structure and an extensive social network, which is unusual in traditional cartographic storytelling. In this paper, we discuss our design decisions and rationals. We believe our discussion will benefit other interactive story designers who deal with similar complex stories.more » « less

As demand for data scientists has increased to inform decision-making across multiple fields of societal importance, postsecondary institutions have expanded data science course offerings. Despite such growth, educators struggle to teach students all the skills central to data science. They focus on programming and statistical tools and lack time for mentoring students in data storytelling. This working paper reviewed literature and interviewed experts to model the domain knowledge of data storytelling to inform the design of intelligent technology to support data storytelling instruction at scale. The paper closes with a recommendation of two ways that artificial intelligence tools can support the development of students’ data storytelling knowledge and skills: "direct" feedback to students on routine data science tasks and "facilitated" summaries of students' data story progress to inform instructors' feedback. We intend to apply these insights to the design of intelligent coaching in an online platform to support the development of storytelling competency at scale.more » « less

Digital storytelling in combination with makerspace activities holds significant potential to engage students and support their learning. When students play, such as through makerspace activities, they engage in critical thinking and problem solving. In our work, we are joining storytelling with computational thinking (CT) practices, physical science exploration, and makerspace activities through a digital narrative-centered learning environment for elementary school. Learning within the environment is undergirded by makerspace play that centers on finding solutions to an open problem—how can stranded scientists on a remote island power up their village using found materials? The learning environment supports students’ CT practices and science content learning as they use and problem solve with physical energy conversion kits, culminating in their creation of an interactive story. We present here a brief case study of the ways students’ experiences with makerspace play support their problem solving and storytelling.more » « less

Current systems that use gestures to enable storytelling tend to mostly rely on a pre-scripted set of gestures or the use of manipulative gestures with respect to tangibles. Our research aims to inform the design of gesture recognition systems for storytelling with implications derived from a feature-based analysis of iconic gestures that occur during naturalistic oral storytelling. We collected story retellings of a collection of cartoon stimuli from 20 study participants, and a gesture analysis was performed on videos of the story retellings focusing on iconic gestures. Iconic gestures are a type of representational gesture that provides information about objects such as their shape, location, or movement. The form features of the iconic gestures were analyzed with respect to the concepts that they portrayed. Patterns between the two were identified and used to create recommendations for patterns in gesture form a system could be primed to recognize.more » « less
