This report is a summary of the mini-conference on Workforce Development Through Research-Based, Plasma-Focused Science Education and Public Engagement held during the 2022 American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics annual meeting. The motivation for organizing this mini-conference originates from recent studies and community-based reports highlighting important issues with the current state of the plasma workforce. Here, we summarize the main findings presented in the two speaker sessions of the mini-conference, the challenges, and recommendations identified in the discussion sessions and the results from a post-conference survey. We further provide information on initiatives and studies presented at the mini-conference, along with references to further resources.

For three days, 300 attendees embodied the subject of groundwater by going underground in the Hyatt San Francisco Airport conference center. This unique conference at the intersections of science and policy, groundwater and agriculture, water quality, and water supply brought together people from over 30 countries and six continents. Groundwater is the lifeline for many rural and agricultural regions around the world. The conference created an opportunity for researchers and practitioners from a variety of agricultural and political systems to share their similar challenges, such as declining water tables, deteriorating water quality, and solutions, such as long-term monitoring and creative engineering. The meeting was a much needed expansion of the 2010 version of this conference. Presentations were expanded to four parallel tracks, and each of the three days was opened with a 2-hour plenary session. A luncheon keynote was given on the first day, and poster sessions were held on two evenings. The conference closed with a high caliber closing panel reflecting on the challenges and opportunities. The International Conference on Language Documentation & Conservation series, or ICLDC, has, since its inception in 2009, become the flagship conference for the field of language documentation. Every two years, conference attendees gather at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa to share their experiences working on diverse topics related to the preservation of underrepresented languages worldwide. Attendees come from a range of backgrounds: Indigenous language communities, language activism organizations, K–12 school systems, as well as students and faculty from colleges and universities. They represent dozens of countries and hundreds of languages, and they have one goal in mind: supporting small languages together. In this paper, we trace the history of the ICLDC series since the first iteration and discuss the scope of its impact on the field of language documentation and conservation according to conference attendees. We also look ahead to the changes that the covid-19 pandemic will bring to the structure of the conference in 2021 and beyond.more » « less
