Steady-state traveling waves in structures have been previously investigated for a variety of purposes including propulsion of objects and agitation of a surrounding medium. In the field of additive manufacturing, powder bed fusion (PBF) is a commonly used process that uses heat to fuse regions of metallic or polymer powders within a loose bed. PBF processes require post-process removal of loose powder, which can be difficult when blind holes or complex internal geometry are present in the fabricated part. Here, a preliminary investigation of a simple part is conducted examining the use of traveling waves for post-process de-powdering of additively manufactured specimens. The generation of steady-state traveling waves in a structure is accomplished through excitation at a frequency between two adjacent resonant frequencies of the structure, resulting in two-mode excitation. This excitation can be generated by bonded piezoceramic elements actuated by a sinusoidal voltage signal. The response of the structure is affected by the parameters of the excitation, such as the particular frequency of the voltage signal, the placement of the piezoceramic actuators, and the phase difference in the signals applied to different actuators. Careful selection of these parameters allows adjustment of the quality, wavelength, and wave speed of the resulting traveling waves. In this work, open-top rectangular box specimens composed of sintered nylon powder and coated with fine sand are used to represent freshly fabricated parts yet-to-be cleaned of un-sintered powder. Steady-state traveling waves are excited in the specimens while variations in the frequency content and phase differences between actuation points of the excitation are used to affect the characteristics of the dynamic response. The effectiveness of several response types for the purpose of moving un-sintered nylon powder within the specimens is investigated.

Utilizing Steady-State Traveling Waves in a Quiescent Water Environment for Particle Propulsion

The complexity of this research lies in balancing the finesse of particle motion while concurrently imposing constraints on the number of control cycles implemented. To address this challenge comprehensively, we introduce a diverse range of control cycles tailored to manipulate particles of varying sizes. Navigating the nuanced dynamics of this system requires a sophisticated approach, prompting the adoption of the Reinforcement Learning Approach. This methodological choice empowers us to discern the characteristics of traveling waves necessary for facilitating the movement of particles with divergent sizes. The utilization of Reinforcement Learning not only refines our understanding of the intricate interplay between waves and particles but also enhances our ability to optimize control strategies in this particular context. The significance of this research extends beyond the confines of the laboratory, resonating in various applications, with particular prominence in advancing transportation mechanisms for cells and analogous entities. Hypothesis: Symmetry breaking in an electric field-driven active particle system can be induced by applying a spatially uniform, but temporally non-uniform, alternating current (AC) signal. Regardless of the type of particles exposed to sawtooth AC signals, the unevenly induced polarization of the ionic charge layer leads to a major electrohydrodynamic effect of active propulsion, termed Asymmetric Field Electrophoresis (AFEP). Experiments: Suspensions containing latex microspheres of three sizes, as well as Janus and metal-coated particles were subjected to sawtooth AC signals of varying voltages, frequencies, and time asymmetries. Particle tracking via microscopy was used to analyze their motility as a function of the key parameters. Findings: The particles exhibit field-colinear active propulsion, and the temporal reversal of the AC signal results in a reversal of their direction of motion. The experimental velocity data as a function of field strength, frequency, and signal asymmetry are supported by models of asymmetric ionic concentration-polarization. The direction of particle migration exhibits a size-dependent crossover in the low frequency domain. This enables new approaches for simple and efficient on-chip sorting. Combining AFEP with other AC motility mechanisms, such as induced-charge electrophoresis, allows multiaxial control of particle motion and could enable development of novel AC field-driven active microsystems.more » « less

Abstract Stimuli‐responsive hydrogels with programmable shapes produced by defined patterns of particles are of great interest for the fabrication of small‐scale soft actuators and robots. Patterning the particles in the hydrogels during fabrication generally requires external magnetic or electric fields, thus limiting the material choice for the particles. Acoustically driven particle manipulation, however, solely depends on the acoustic impedance difference between the particles and the surrounding fluid, making it a more versatile method to spatially control particles. Here, an approach is reported by combining direct acoustic force to align photothermal particles and photolithography to spatially immobilize these alignments within a temperature‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel to trigger shape deformation under temperature change and light exposure. The spatial distribution of particles can be tuned by the power and frequency of the acoustic waves. Specifically, changing the spacing between the particle patterns and position alters the bending curvature and direction of this composite hydrogel sheet, respectively. Moreover, the orientation (i.e., relative angle) of the particle alignments with respect to the long axis of laser‐cut hydrogel strips governs the bending behaviors and the subsequent shape deformation by external stimuli. Abstract Automated manipulation of small particles using external (e.g., magnetic, electric and acoustic) fields has been an emerging technique widely used in different areas. The manipulation typically necessitates a reduced‐order physical model characterizing the field‐driven motion of particles in a complex environment. Such models are available only for highly idealized settings but are absent for a general scenario of particle manipulation typically involving complex nonlinear processes, which has limited its application. In this work, the authors present a data‐driven architecture for controlling particles in microfluidics based on hydrodynamic manipulation. The architecture replaces the difficult‐to‐derive model by a generally trainable artificial neural network to describe the kinematics of particles, and subsequently identifies the optimal operations to manipulate particles. The authors successfully demonstrate a diverse set of particle manipulations in a numerically emulated microfluidic chamber, including targeted assembly of particles and subsequent navigation of the assembled cluster, simultaneous path planning for multiple particles, and steering one particle through obstacles. The approach achieves both spatial and temporal controllability of high precision for these settings. This achievement revolutionizes automated particle manipulation, showing the potential of data‐driven approaches and machine learning in improving microfluidic technologies for enhanced flexibility and intelligence.more » « less

Abstract Traveling waves of mechanical actuation provide a versatile strategy for locomotion and transport in both natural and engineered systems across many scales. These rhythmic motor patterns are often orchestrated by systems of coupled oscillators such as beating cilia or firing neurons. Here, we show that similar motions can be realized within linear arrays of conductive particles that oscillate between biased electrodes through cycles of contact charging and electrostatic actuation. The repulsive interactions among the particles along with spatial gradients in their natural frequencies lead to phase-locked states characterized by gradients in the oscillation phase. The frequency and wavelength of these traveling waves can be specified independently by varying the applied voltage and the electrode separation. We demonstrate how traveling wave synchronization can enable the directed transport of material cargo. Our results suggest that simple energy inputs can coordinate complex motions with opportunities for soft robotics and colloidal machines.more » « less
