Volunteer moderators play a crucial role in safeguarding online communities, actively combating hate, harassment, and inappropriate content while enforcing community standards. Prior studies have examined moderation tools and practices, moderation challenges, and the emotional labor and burnout of volunteer moderators. However, researchers have yet to delve into the ways moderators support one another in combating hate and harassment within the communities they moderate through participation in meta-communities of moderators. To address this gap, we have conducted a qualitative content analysis of 115 hate and harassment-related threads from r/ModSupport and r/modhelp, two major subreddit forums for moderators for this type of mutual support. Our study reveals that moderators seek assistance on topics ranging from fighting attacks to understanding Reddit policies and rules to just venting their frustration. Other moderators respond to these requests by validating their frustration and challenges, showing emotional support, and providing information and tangible resources to help with their situation. Based on these findings, we share the implications of our work in facilitating platform and peer support for online volunteer moderators on Reddit and similar platforms.

Stoking the Flames: Understanding Escalation in an Online Harassment Community
Online harassment remains a prevalent problem for internet users. Its impact is made orders of magnitude worse when multiple harassers coordinate to conduct networked attacks. This paper presents an analysis of 231 threads in Kiwi Farms, a notorious online harassment community. We find that networked online harassment campaigns consists of three phases: target introduction, network decision, and network response. The first stage consists of the initial narrative elements, that are approved or not in stage two and expanded in stage three. Narrative building is a common element of all three stages. The network plays a key role in narrative building, adding elements to the narrative in at least 80 % of the threads, resulting in sustained harassment. This finding is central to our model of Continuous Narrative Escalation (CNE), that has two parts: (1) narrative continuation, the action of repeatedly adding new information to the existing narrative and (2) escalation, the aggravation of harassment that occurs as a consequence. In addition, we present insights from our analysis of 100 takedown requests threads, discussing received abuse reports. We find that these takedown requests are misused by the community and are used as elements to further fuel the narrative. We use our findings and framework to come up with a set of recommendations, that can inform harassment interventions and make online spaces safer.

State-intensive network and distributed applications rely heavily on online caching heuristics for high performance. However, there remains a fundamental performance gap between online caching heuristics and the optimal offline caching algorithm due to the lack of visibility into future state access requests in an online setting. Driven by the observation that state access requests in network and distributed applications are often carried in incoming network packets, we present Seer, an online caching solution for networked systems, that exploits the delays experienced by a packet inside a network - most prominently, transmission and queuing delays - to notify in advance of future packet arrivals to the target network nodes (switches/routers/middleboxes/end-hosts) implementing caching. Using this as a building block, Seer presents the design of an online cache manager that leverages visibility into (partial) set of future state access requests to make smarter prefetching and cache eviction decisions. Our evaluations show that Seer achieves up to 65% lower cache miss ratio and up to 78% lower flow completion time compared to LRU for key network applications over realistic workloads.more » « less

Online harassment negatively impacts mental health, with victims expressing increased concerns such as depression, anxiety, and even increased risk of suicide, especially among youth and young adults. Yet, research has mainly focused on building automated systems to detect harassment incidents based on publicly available social media trace data, overlooking the impact of these negative events on the victims, especially in private channels of communication. Looking to close this gap, we examine a large dataset of private message conversations from Instagram shared and annotated by youth aged 13-21. We apply trained classifiers from online mental health to analyze the impact of online harassment on indicators pertinent to mental health expressions. Through a robust causal inference design involving a difference-in-differences analysis, we show that harassment results in greater expression of mental health concerns in victims up to 14 days following the incidents, while controlling for time, seasonality, and topic of conversation. Our study provides new benchmarks to quantify how victims perceive online harassment in the immediate aftermath of when it occurs. We make social justice-centered design recommendations to support harassment victims in private networked spaces. Online harassment refers to a wide range of harmful behaviors, including hate speech, insults, doxxing, and non-consensual image sharing. Social media platforms have developed complex processes to try to detect and manage content that may violate community guidelines; however, less work has examined the types of harms associated with online harassment or preferred remedies to that harassment. We conducted three online surveys with US adult Internet users measuring perceived harms and preferred remedies associated with online harassment. Study 1 found greater perceived harm associated with non-consensual photo sharing, doxxing, and reputational damage compared to other types of harassment. Study 2 found greater perceived harm with repeated harassment compared to one-time harassment, but no difference between individual and group harassment. Study 3 found variance in remedy preferences by harassment type; for example, banning users is rated highly in general, but is rated lower for non-consensual photo sharing and doxxing compared to harassing family and friends and damaging reputation. Our findings highlight that remedies should be responsive to harassment type and potential for harm. Remedies are also not necessarily correlated with harassment severity—expanding remedies may allow for more contextually appropriate and effective responses to harassment.more » « less

In a networked anagram game, each team member is given a set of letters and members collectively form as many words as possible. They can share letters through a communication network in assisting their neighbors in forming words. There is variability in behaviors of players, e.g., there can be large differences in numbers of letter requests, of replies to letter requests, and of words formed among players. Therefore, it is of great importance to understand uncertainty and variability in player behaviors. In this work, we propose versatile uncertainty quantification (VUQ) of behaviors for modeling the networked anagram game. Specifically, the proposed methods focus on building contrastive models of game player behaviors that quantify player actions in terms of worst, average, and best performance. Moreover, we construct agent-based models and perform agent-based simulations using these VUQ methods to evaluate the model building methodology and understand the impact of uncertainty.
