In this session, we will consider how to use place-based data to build your case to sponsors for funding research at your institution, particularly for sponsors who operate on the national or international scale. The setting of your institution—the communities it developed in, the region where it operates, and the people it reaches and serves—is key for conveying its unique capacities and potentials, and for making sponsors eager to bring you into their funding portfolio. How can data help you introduce yourself as an institution and tell your story in geographical and economic context? In this session we will explore US Census data, other federal data hubs, and research and reporting from organizations such as the Pew Research Center or the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). We will cover the benefits and challenges of working with raw data; identify suitable data types for certain purposes, such as diversity and equity issues; and consider what kinds of data and presentations are most compelling to different types of funders. With greater awareness of what data and tools are available, you can “put yourself on the map” and paint a vivid picture of your community for prospective funders. Making the Most of What You Have: Data to Optimize Space and Achieve Research Goals
Every institution has a strategic goal for more research funding and results. The drive for funding is inextricably tied to competition for top researchers, and competition for researchers is directly related to investments in and optimization of research space on university campuses. The case for focusing on space is critical when you expect each lab to produce $1 million or more in expenditures every 4 years. How can you use data analytics to optimize space allocation for research? How can you creatively use under-utilized spaces for short- and long-term research investments? This session will discuss Carnegie R2 and R1 and USNWR rankings as related to strategic research investments, cover key challenges in aligning PI, space and expenditure datasets, and demonstrate the use of data tools to optimize space assets.

This session will explore ways to locate, analyze, and present sponsor-provided data to guide research development. Individual investigators, who may be proposing to a funder for the first time, often want to know about funding success rates, as well as more nuanced insight into the kinds of projects agencies tend to favor. They may also benefit from insight into changing workforce demographics and career trajectories in their discipline. At the departmental and institutional level, leadership seeks information about trends in funding availability and mechanisms, and in patterns of grants made, to better position themselves for these opportunities. As a research development professional, how can you best use available data from and about grantmakers to answer their questions? Better yet, how can you proactively access and interpret this data to keep your institution informed of trends relevant to its priorities? In this session, we will take a tour of valuable data sources such as NIH RePORTER and the NIH data book, NCSES’s Survey of Federal Funds for Research and Development, and directories of philanthropy like Candid. Research analytics has become an indispensable part in today’s higher education institutions’ organizational structure. It not only provides a mechanism or platform to present research awards and expenditures data to internal and external data users, but also serves a superior tool that enables data-driven strategic decision makings with more reliable, valid, and in-depth analysis. The development of Artificial Intelligence techniques could push the boundary of Research Analytics to an even higher level by incorporating the abundance of data scattered across the university. We propose to present one attempt adopted by University at Albany, State University of New York (UAlbany) to incorporate AI techniques to Research Analytics: a project called Research Highlighter-MatchMaker. The Research Highlighter-MatchMaker project aims to identify research clusters at UAlbany, recommend funding opportunities for faculty/researcher, and suggest potential collaborations. Based on AI and Big Language Models, the project will identify core research clusters by UAlbany faculty and researchers and suggest potential collaborations for multidisciplinary projects across the campus. Moreover, the project aims to recommend more suitable and relevant funding opportunities to different faculty and researchers based on their research track records including their grant proposal abstracts and publication abstracts, with a potential to incorporate more research data associated with researchers such as technology transfer agreements and compliance documents in the future. One major strength of this self-established project is that it takes advantage of AI techniques to provide more personalized and tailored matches for faculty and researchers by considering their research track records on file, instead of providing limited recommendations based on only keyword match that is adopted by many current products on the market. Our purpose is to offer personalized suggestions to faculty and researchers with well-matched funding opportunities, save their time and effort on searching and screening a long list of funding opportunities from databases on their own, and avoid the occurrence of missing good funding opportunities that they could have successfully obtained.more » « less

Platforms often host multiple online groups with overlapping topics and members. How can researchers and designers understand how related groups affect each other? Inspired by population ecology, prior research in social computing and human-computer interaction has studied related groups by correlating group size with degrees of overlap in content and membership, but has produced puzzling results: overlap is associated with competition in some contexts but with mutual-ism in others. We suggest that this inconsistency results from aggregating intergroup relationships into an overall environmental effect that obscures the diversity of competition and mutualism among related groups. Drawing on the framework of community ecology, we introduce a time-series method for inferring competition and mutualism. We then use this frame-work to inform a large-scale analysis of clusters of subreddits that all have high user overlap. We find that mutualism is more common than competition.more » « less
