This session does exactly that! Six exceptional educators will present innovative content just as they would to their students. The moderator, Colleen Lewis, will describe their pedagogical moves and how they connect to education research. The goal of the session is to inspire SIGCSE attendees by highlighting innovative instruction by exceptional educators. Attendees can adopt the content and/or pedagogical moves from each microteaching example.

Microteaching: Binary Heaps, Side-Channel Attacks, Equitable Grading, Java Classes, Loops, and 3D Java
This microteaching session is like Nifty Assignments for instruction. Instead of having the presenters just talk about their teaching, they will simulate how they would actually teach something. Covering a range of topics and grade levels, six educators will demo how they would teach a specific topic. To help identify the pedagogical practices that cut across grade bands and topics, the moderator, Colleen Lewis, will describe how their pedagogical practices connect with education research. The goal of the session is to inspire SIGCSE attendees by highlighting innovative instruction by exceptional educators. Attendees can adopt the content and/or pedagogical practices from each microteaching example.

The goal of the session is to inspire SIGCSE attendees by highlighting innovative instruction by exceptional educators. The specific content of the innovative instruction may be applicable for some attendees, and the discussion of the underlying pedagogical move within each innovation can be applied across the attendees' teaching.more » « less

The Computer Science Frontiers (CSF) project introduces teachers to the topics of artificial intelligence and distributed computing to engage their female students in computing by connecting lessons to relevant cutting edge technologies. Application topics include social media and news articles, as well as climate change, the arts (movies, music, and museum collections), and public health/medicine. CSF educators are prepared in a pedagogy and peer-teaching centered professional development program where they simultaneously learn and teach distributed computing, artificial intelligence, and internet of things lessons to each other. These professional developments allow educators to hone in on their teaching skills of these new topics and gain confidence in their ability to teach new computer science materials before running several activities with their students in the academic year classroom. In this workshop, teachers participating in the CS Frontiers professional development will give testimonials discussing their experiences teaching these topics in a two week summer camp. Attendees will then try out three computing activities, one from each Computer Science Frontiers module. Finally, there will be a question and answer session.more » « less

Developing a repertoire of notional machines (i.e., pedagogical tools for teaching programming) is essential for new computer science (CS) educators. However, there is a lack of documentation of notional machines and related pedagogical content knowledge (i.e., insights into teaching CS content). Our experience report addresses this lack of documentation and captures insights from our professional learning community. We co-designed an approach to use physical objects to teach inheritance in Java. Unlike a research paper that would rigorously document a few student outcomes with the expectation that these would generalize, our experience report shares our observations from multiple years of teaching with the goal of providing a number of things for educators to consider when teaching inheritance in Java. Drawing from an analysis of our meeting notes, we describe our instructional sequence, our perceptions of its current strengths and weaknesses for supporting students’ learning, insights from our previous failed attempts, and eight pedagogical practices.more » « less

Olanoff, D; Johnson, K.; Spitzer, S (Ed.)Administrators, educators, and stakeholders have faced the dilemma of determining the most effective type of data for informing instruction for quite some time (Pella, 2015). While the type of standardized assessment a teacher gives during instruction is often set at the district or state level, teachers often have autonomy in the formative and summative assessments that serve as the day-to-day tools in assessing a student’s progress (Abrams et al., 2016). Choices about in-class assessment and instruction are building blocks towards a student’s success on standardized assessments. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study is to explore how 4th-8th grade math teachers’ preparation and instructional practices are influenced by the types of assessments administered to their students in one school. Research questions are as follows: (a) How do 4th-8th grade math teachers describe the math assessments they use? (b) How do 4th-8th grade math teachers adjust their instructional practices as a result of their students completing formative, summative, and standardized math assessments?more » « less
