Dense packs of icebergs and sea ice, known as ice mélange, occur in many fjords in Greenland and Antarctica. Observations suggest that ice mélange may directly affect iceberg calving by pressing against the glacier front and indirectly affect glacier melting by controlling where and when icebergs melt which can impact ocean circulation and ocean heat transport towards glaciers. However, the interactions between ice mélange, ocean circulation, and iceberg calving have not been systematically investigated due to the difficulty of conducting field work in Greenland fjords. In order to investigate the dynamics of ice mélange (and other floating granular materials) and to inform development of ice mélange models, we conducted a series of laboratory experiments using synthetic icebergs (plastic blocks) that were pushed down a tank by a synthetic glacier. This data set consists of force measurements on the glacier terminus and time-lapse photographs of the experiments that were used for visualizing motion.

            ### Overview This data release includes surface nuclear magnetic resonance (sNMR) data collected as part of the SUN-SPEARS project. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation (Award number 2015329) and is concerned with studying soil evolution in high Arctic environments post glacial retreat. Within SUN-SPEARS, data are collected on a chronosequence from very recently deglaciated to older locations which have been exposed for decades to centuries. In this data release, sNMR data from two sites are included: site 1 which was collected approximately 15 meters (m) from the snout of the glacier, and site 2 which was located approximately 1000 m from the snout of the glacier, Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates are included for more precise locations. ### Access Data files can be accessed via: [https://arcticdata.io/data/10.18739/A23X83N25](https://arcticdata.io/data/10.18739/A23X83N25)

We established three game camera sites at beaver-impacted streams on the Baldwin Peninsula from August 2023-April 2024. We aimed to collect information regarding ice formation phenology, overflow dynamics, and wildlife interactions. Two cameras were deployed adjacent to beaver dams, and another was deployed at a "control" site in a part of a stream that remains unimpacted by beavers. Cameras were set in a hybrid setting, collecting images through timelapse and trigger settings. Two cameras (Moultrie brand) lost power in early December, and one (Bushnell brand) maintained power over the entire study period. Cameras captured ice formation dynamics in early fall, as well as a series of overflow events. From this rudimentary data set, we did not detect differences in ice formation between ponds and the control site. We were also able to detect a dam bursting event following an August rain storm, which beavers did not repair before winter. Cameras captured a variety of wildlife, including red foxes, moose, brown bears, Canada geese, green-winged teal, and, of course, beavers.more » « less

            ### Overview This dataset contains simulated significant wave height data generated from the WaveWatch III model run from 2020 up to 2070. It was produced to predict future environmental hazards threatening maritime navigation within the Arctic. Four unique simulations were produced using different Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) climate models' wind and sea ice projections along the shared socioeconomic pathways 5-8.5 (SSP5-8.5) future emissions scenario. The climate models used include: CNRM-CM6-1-HR, EC-Earth3, MPI-ESM1-2-HR, and MRI-ESM2-0. For each climate model, data is organized into yearly files written to NetCDF format. The data is contained on a spatially-varying unstructured triangular mesh which spans from 50° North (N) to 89.9°N and 180° West (W) to 180° East (E). The 'hs' variable presents the significant wave height (highest one thirds of wave heights) to occur for each node during the simulation in 6 hour intervals. ### Access Data files can be accessed via: [https://arcticdata.io/data/10.18739/A2ST7DZ74/](https://arcticdata.io/data/10.18739/A2ST7DZ74/)more » « less

Data was collected in the summer of 2024 using a DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise quadcopter with integrated multispectral and rgb sensors. The majority of the imagery focuses on study sites within the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) site near Healy, Alaska. The data set also includes a small amount of ground truth data on tussock dimensions for these sites. Additional images include a series of riparian corridors with beaver wetlands along the Denali and Steese Highways.more » « less

The core was obtained during fieldwork supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Arctic Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant #2230019, titled Assessing the impacts of Pleistocene megaherbivores on vegetation stability and resilience in the Arctic, awarded to Principal Investigator (PI) Jacquelyn L. Gill and Co-PI Alessandro Mereghetti. The primary objective of this project is to investigate how Pleistocene megafaunal diversity influenced long-term plant community dynamics and ecosystem resilience in Arctic environments. These data contribute to understanding ecological baselines and biotic responses to past climate and extinction events, with implications for modern conservation and rewilding strategies.more » « less
