Title: Nash blowups of toric varieties in prime characteristic
Abstract We initiate the study of the resolution of singularities properties of Nash blowups over fields of prime characteristic. We prove that the iteration of normalized Nash blowups desingularizes normal toric surfaces. We also introduce a prime characteristic version of the logarithmic Jacobian ideal of a toric variety and prove that its blowup coincides with the Nash blowup of the variety. As a consequence, the Nash blowup of a, not necessarily normal, toric variety of arbitrary dimension in prime characteristic can be described combinatorially.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Generalizing previous results of Arezzo–Pacard–Singer, Seyyedali–Székelyhidi, and Hallam, we prove the invariance under smooth blowups of the class of weighted extremal Kähler manifolds, modulo a log‐concavity assumption on the first weight. Through recent work of Di Nezza–Jubert–Lahdili and Han–Liu, this is obtained as a consequence of a general uniform coercivity estimate for the (relative, weighted) Mabuchi energy on the blowup, which applies more generally to any equivariant resolution of singularities of Fano type of a compact Kähler klt space whose Mabuchi energy is assumed to be coercive.

  2. Abstract The ellipsoid embedding function of a symplectic manifold gives the smallest amount by which the symplectic form must be scaled in order for a standard ellipsoid of the given eccentricity to embed symplectically into the manifold. It was first computed for the standard four‐ball (or equivalently, the complex projective plane) by McDuff and Schlenk, and found to contain the unexpected structure of an “infinite staircase,” that is, an infinite sequence of nonsmooth points arranged in a piecewise linear stair‐step pattern. Later work of Usher and Cristofaro‐Gardiner–Holm–Mandini–Pires suggested that while four‐dimensional symplectic toric manifolds with infinite staircases are plentiful, they are highly nongeneric. This paper concludes the systematic study of one‐point blowups of the complex projective plane, building on previous work of Bertozzi‐Holm‐Maw‐McDuff‐Mwakyoma‐Pires‐Weiler, Magill‐McDuff, Magill‐McDuff‐Weiler, and Magill on these Hirzebruch surfaces. We prove a conjecture of Cristofaro‐Gardiner–Holm–Mandini–Pires for this family: that if the blowup is of rational weight and the embedding function has an infinite staircase then that weight must be . We show also that the function for this manifold does not have a descending staircase. Furthermore, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of an infinite staircase in this family which boils down to solving a quadratic equation and computing the function at one specific value. Many of our intermediate results also apply to the case of the polydisk (or equivalently, the symplectic product of two spheres).

  3. The 2-blowup of a graph is obtained by replacing each vertex with two non-adjacent copies; a graph is biplanar if it is the union of two planar graphs. We disprove a conjecture of Gethner that 2-blowups of planar graphs are biplanar: iterated Kleetopes are counterexamples. Additionally, we construct biplanar drawings of 2-blowups of planar graphs whose duals have two-path induced path partitions, and drawings with split thickness two of 2-blowups of 3-chromatic planar graphs, and of graphs that can be decomposed into a Hamiltonian path and a dual Hamiltonian path.

  4. Let 𝐷 be a toric Kähler–Einstein Fano manifold. We show that any toric shrinking gradient Kähler–Ricci soliton on certain toric blowups of C×D satisfies a complex Monge–Ampère equation. We then set up an Aubin continuity path to solve this equation and show that it has a solution at the initial value of the path parameter. This we do by implementing another continuity method.

  5. Abstract We construct projective toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone.As a consequence, we prove that the pseudo-effective cone of the Grothendieck–Knudsen moduli space M¯0,n \overline{M}_{0,n}of stable rational curves is not polyhedral for n10 n\geq 10.These results hold both in characteristic 0 and in characteristic 𝑝, for all primes 𝑝.Many of these toric surfaces are related to an interesting class of arithmetic threefolds that we call arithmetic elliptic pairs of infinite order. Our analysis relies on tools of arithmetic geometry and Galois representations in the spirit of the Lang–Trotter conjecture, producing toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone in characteristic 0 and in characteristic 𝑝, for an infinite set of primes 𝑝 of positive density.
