This search for magnetic monopoles (MMs) and high electric charge objects (HECOs) with spins 0, , and 1, uses for the first time the full MoEDAL detector, exposed to proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV. The results are interpreted in terms of Drell-Yan and photon-fusion pair production. Mass limits on direct production of MMs of up to 10 Dirac magnetic charges and HECOs with electric charge in the range to , were achieved. The charge limits placed on MM and HECO production are currently the strongest in the world. MoEDAL is the only LHC experiment capable of being directly calibrated for highly ionizing particles using heavy ions and with a detector system dedicated to definitively measuring magnetic charge. MoEDAL Search in the CMS Beam Pipe for Magnetic Monopoles Produced via the Schwinger Effect
We report on a search for magnetic monopoles (MMs) produced in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions during Run 1 of the LHC. The beam pipe surrounding the interaction region of the CMS experiment was exposed to of Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV center-of-mass energy per collision in December 2011, before being removed in 2013. It was scanned by the MoEDAL experiment using a SQUID magnetometer to search for trapped MMs. No MM signal was observed. The two distinctive features of this search are the use of a trapping volume very close to the collision point and ultrahigh magnetic fields generated during the heavy-ion run that could produce MMs via the Schwinger effect. These two advantages allowed setting the first reliable, world-leading mass limits on MMs with high magnetic charge. In particular, the established limits are the strongest available in the range between 2 and 45 Dirac units, excluding MMs with masses of up to 80 GeV at a 95% confidence level. A search for hidden-charm pentaquark states decaying to a range of and final states, as well as doubly charmed pentaquark states to and , is made using samples of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of recorded by the LHCb detector at . Since no significant signals are found, upper limits are set on the pentaquark yields relative to that of the baryon in the decay mode. The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high ) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at . A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter , 0.4, and 0.5 in the range and trigger-recoil jet azimuthal separation . The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low and at large azimuthal deviation from . The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on , which has a slope that differs from zero by . Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. The results of a search for stealth supersymmetry in final states with two photons and jets, targeting a phase space region with low missing transverse momentum ( ), are reported. The study is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of . As LHC results continue to constrain the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the low regime is increasingly valuable to explore. To estimate the backgrounds due to standard model processes in such events, we apply corrections derived from simulation to an estimate based on a control selection in data. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified stealth supersymmetry models with gluino and squark pair production. We report a search for neutrino oscillations to sterile neutrinos under a model with three active and one sterile neutrinos ( model). This analysis uses the NOvA detectors exposed to the NuMI beam, running in neutrino mode. The data exposure, protons on target, doubles that previously analyzed by NOvA, and the analysis is the first to use charged-current interactions in conjunction with neutral-current interactions. Neutrino samples in the near and far detectors are fitted simultaneously, enabling the search to be carried out over a range extending 2 (3) orders of magnitude above (below) . NOvA finds no evidence for active-to-sterile neutrino oscillations under the model at 90% confidence level. New limits are reported in multiple regions of parameter space, excluding some regions currently allowed by IceCube at 90% confidence level.
