Summary Rhodophyta (or red algae) are a diverse and species‐rich group that forms one of three major lineages in the Archaeplastida, a eukaryotic supergroup whose plastids arose from a single primary endosymbiosis. Red algae are united by several features, such as relatively small intron‐poor genomes and a lack of cytoskeletal structures associated with motility like flagella and centrioles, as well as a highly efficient photosynthetic capacity. Multicellular red algae (or macroalgae) are one of the earliest diverging eukaryotic lineages to have evolved complex multicellularity, yet despite their ecological, evolutionary, and commercial importance, they have remained a largely understudied group of organisms. Considering the increasing availability of red algal genome sequences, we present a broad overview of fundamental aspects of red macroalgal biology and posit on how this is expected to accelerate research in many domains of red algal biology in the coming years.

The importance of integrating phycological research, teaching, outreach, and engagement in a changing world
Abstract The ecological, evolutionary, economic, and cultural importance of algae necessitates a continued integration of phycological research, education, outreach, and engagement. Here, we comment on several topics discussed during a networking workshop—Algae and the Environment—that brought together phycological researchers from a variety of institutions and career stages. We share some of our perspectives on the state of phycology by examining gaps in teaching and research. We identify action areas where we urge the phycological community to prepare itself to embrace the rapidly changing world. We emphasize the need for more trained taxonomists as well as integration with molecular techniques, which may be expensive and complicated but are important. An essential benefit of these integrative studies is the creation of high‐quality algal reference barcoding libraries augmented with morphological, physiological, and ecological data that are important for studies of systematics and crucial for the accuracy of the metabarcoding bioassessment. We highlight different teaching approaches for engaging undergraduate students in algal studies and the importance of algal field courses, forays, and professional phycological societies in supporting the algal training of students, professionals, and citizen scientists.

Summary Microalgae adapted to near‐zero temperatures and high light levels live on snowfields and glaciers worldwide. Snow algae have red‐colored pigments that darken snow surfaces, lowering its albedo and accelerating snowmelt. Despite their importance to the cryosphere, we know little about controls on snow algal productivity and biomass.Here, we characterize photophysiology from diverse natural field‐collected populations of alpine snow algae from the North Cascades of Washington, USA, where the major red‐bloom producing generaChlainomonas,Sanguina, andRosettawere present. We tested short‐term physiological responses of snow algae to light (0–3000 μmol m−2 s−1) and CO2levels (0–1600 ppm), allowing us to determine the saturating light and CO2levels for snow algal community net photosynthesis.All snow algal communities surveyed were adapted to extremely high light levels (3000 μmol m−2 s−1). In addition, photosynthesis rates of all the snow algal communities responded strongly to increasing CO2levels. At current atmospheric CO2levels (420 ppm), snow algal net photosynthesis rates were onlyc.50% saturated.Together, these results suggest the primary productivity of important bloom‐forming snow algal communities in alpine ecosystems will likely rise as atmospheric CO2concentrations increase, regardless of potential changes in available light levels.more » « less

Tropical reefs are commonly transitioning from coral to macroalgal dominance, but the role of macroalgae in coral decline remains inadequately understood. A growing body of research suggests that algae may harm corals via disruptions to the homeostasis of the coral holobiont, including resident microbial communities, but the processes that mediate these potential microbial effects and the spatial scales at which they operate are uncertain. Resolving the relative importance and context dependencies of microbially-mediated algal-coral competition is critical for understanding and predicting coral dynamics as reefs further degrade. In this review, we examine the current state of knowledge surrounding algal impacts on corals via disruption of their microbiomes, with a particular focus on the mechanisms hypothesized to mediate microbial effects, the scales at which they are thought to operate, and the evidence from laboratory- and field-based studies for their existence and ecological relevance in the wild. Abstract Much of the evolutionary ecology of toxic algal blooms (TABs) remains unclear, including the role of algal toxins in the adaptive ‘strategies’ of TAB‐forming species. Most eukaryotic TABs are caused by mixotrophs that augment autotrophy with organic nutrient sources, including competing algae (intraguild predation). We leverage the standing diversity of TABs formed by the toxic, invasive mixotrophPrymnesium parvumto identify cell‐level behaviours involved in toxin‐assisted predation using direct observations as well as comparisons between genetically distinct low‐ and high‐toxicity isolates. Our results suggest thatP. parvumtoxins are primarily delivered at close range and promote subsequent prey capture/consumption. Surprisingly, we findoppositechemotactic preferences for organic (prey‐derived) and inorganic nutrients between differentially toxic isolates, respectively, suggesting behavioural integration of toxicity and phagotrophy. Variation in toxicity may, therefore, reflect broader phenotypic integration of key traits that ultimately contribute to the remarkable flexibility, diversity, and success of invasive populations.more » « less

Since the discovery of the first “giant virus,” particular attention has been paid toward isolating and culturing these large DNA viruses throughAcanthamoebaspp. bait systems. While this method has allowed for the discovery of plenty novel viruses in theNucleocytoviricota, environmental -omics-based analyses have shown that there is a wealth of diversity among this phylum, particularly in marine datasets. The prevalence of these viruses in metatranscriptomes points toward their ecological importance in nutrient turnover in our oceans and as such, in depth study into non-amoebalNucleocytoviricotashould be considered a focal point in viral ecology. In this review, we report onKratosvirus quantuckense(née Aureococcus anophagefferens Virus), an algae-infecting virus of theImitervirales. Current systems for study in theNucleocytoviricotadiffer significantly from this virus and its relatives, and a litany of trade-offs within physiology, coding potential, and ecology compared to these other viruses reveal the importance ofK. quantuckense. Herein, we review the research that has been performed on this virus as well as its potential as a model system for algal-virus interactions.more » « less
