The present research examines a pattern-based measure of communications based on Closed Loop Communications (CLC) and non-content verbal metrics to predict Loss of Separation (LOS) in the National Airspace System (NAS). This study analyzes the transcripts from six retired Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) who participated in three simulated trials of various workloads in a TRACON arrival radar simulation. Results indicated a statistically significant model for predicting LOS based on CLC deviations (CLCD), word count in transmission, words per second, and traffic density. However, more research is required to evaluate the significance of each communication variable to predict LOS.

Writing and Using Learning Objectives
This essay introduces an evidence-based teaching guide that presents research and resources on the uses and benefits of learning objectives (LOs). It summarizes key articles and includes a checklist, with the goal of encouraging instructors to incorporate LOs into their teaching practice. Ideas for further research are also discussed.

Learning objectives (LOs) are designed to orient learners to the importance of an upcoming lesson. Despite their intuitive value, research shows that instructors and students often perceive them as useless (or worse). Yet, LOs contain important information to guide students’ attention and self-regulated study. In two experiments, we investigate whether making simple modifications that encourage learners to more actively process the LOs (i.e., turning them into prequestions or metacognitive judgments versus control) can improve engagement and learning from a subsequent text passage. Modifying LOs increased subsequent test performance, though effects were largest for earlier content than for later content. These results suggest a potential way to use LOs to augment student learning.more » « less

This research, full paper examines the impact of introducing asset-based perspectives on faculty mental models of teaching and learning through participation in a Community of Practice. Ongoing research at California State University, Los Angeles is exploring how faculty perspectives are affected after participating in a community of practice intended to promote asset-based thinking towards students. This research challenges the factory-based framing of engineering education and advocates for an ecosystem model, where all participants-students, faculty, and staff-recognize their interdependence and embrace authenticity. This paper is based on qualitative data from minute papers, or participant reflections. Through inductive qualitative coding of this data, the research team has developed a code book with themes around Insights into Mindsets and Critical Points regarding understanding asset-based perspectives. Our results, contribute to the conversation about changing mental models, by tracing the journey of different faculty as they learn about asset-based perspective, process their learning through discussion and application, and how introducing this different framework affects faculty perspectives on students. This conversation is particularly important as we continue to create more inclusive classrooms, especially when faculty and students have differing experiences, based on different social identities (e.g. different racial/ethnic identities, socioeconomic status, gender identity). The contributions will also include implications for practice as we understand how faculty consider asset-based perspectives.more » « less

Light transport contains all light information between a light source and an image sensor. As an important application of light transport, dual photography has been a popular research topic, but it is challenged by long acquisition time, low signal-to-noise ratio, and the storage or processing of a large number of measurements. In this Letter, we propose a novel hardware setup that combines a flying-spot micro-electro mechanical system (MEMS) modulated projector with an event camera to implement dual photography for 3D scanning in both line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenes with a transparent object. In particular, we achieved depth extraction from the LoS scenes and 3D reconstruction of the object in a NLoS scene using event light transport.more » « less
