Abstract The imidophosphorane ligand, [NPtBu3]−(tBu=tert‐butyl), enables isolation of a pseudo‐tetrahedral, tetravalent praseodymium complex, [Pr4+(NPtBu3)4] (1‐Pr), which is characterized by a suite of physical characterization methods including single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, and L3‐edge X‐ray near‐edge spectroscopies. Variable‐temperature direct‐current magnetic susceptibility data, supported by multiconfigurational quantum chemical calculations, demonstrate that the electronic structure diverges from the isoelectronic Ce3+analogue, driven by increased crystal field. The four‐coordinate environment around Pr4+in1‐Pr, which is unparalleled in reported extended solid systems, provides a unique opportunity to study the interplay between crystal field splitting and spin‐orbit coupling in a molecular tetravalent lanthanide within a pseudo‐tetrahedral coordination geometry.

Rapid Aminations of Functionalized Aryl Fluorosulfates in Water
Abstract Aryl fluorosulfates of varying complexities have been used in amination reactions in water using a new Pd oxidative addition complex (OAC‐1) developed specifically to match the needs of the fine chemicals industry, not only in terms of functional group tolerance, but also reflecting time considerations associated with these important C−N couplings. Also especially noteworthy is that they replace both PFAS‐related triflates and nonaflates, which are today out of favor due to recent government regulations. The new complex based on the BippyPhos ligand is used at low loadings and under aqueous micellar conditions. Moreover, it is easily prepared and stable to long term storage. DFT calculations on the OAC precatalyst compare well with the X‐ray structure of the crystals with π‐complexation to the aromatic system of the ligand and also confirm the NMR data showing a mixture of conformers in solution that differ from the X‐ray structure in rotation of the phenyl andt‐butyl ligand substituents. An extensive variety of coupling partners, including pharmaceutically relevant APIs, readily participate under mild and environmentally responsible reaction conditions.

Abstract Understanding the electronic structures of high‐valent metal complexes aids the advancement of metal‐catalyzed cross coupling methodologies. A prototypical complex with formally high valency is [Cu(CF3)4]−(1), which has a formal Cu(III) oxidation state but whose physical analysis has led some to a Cu(I) assignment in an inverted ligand field model. Recent examinations of1by X‐ray spectroscopies have led previous authors to contradictory conclusions, motivating the re‐examination of its X‐ray absorption profile here by a complementary method, resonant diffraction anomalous fine structure (DAFS). From analysis of DAFS measurements for a series of seven mononuclear Cu complexes including1, here it is shown that there is a systematic trifluoromethyl effect on X‐ray absorption that blue shifts the resonant Cu K‐edge energy by 2–3 eV per CF3, completely accounting for observed changes in DAFS profiles between formally Cu(III) complexes like1and formally Cu(I) complexes like (Ph3P)3CuCF3(3). Thus, in agreement with the inverted ligand field model, the data presented herein imply that1is best described as containing a Cu(I) ion with dncount approaching 10.more » « less

Abstract Vibrational Raman optical activity (ROA) spectra were calculated under off‐resonance, near‐resonance, and at‐resonance conditions for(A) and under off‐resonance conditions for(B) using a new driver software for calculating the ROA intensities from complex (damped) time‐dependent linear response Kohn‐Sham theory. The off‐resonance spectra ofAandBshow many similarities. At an incident laser wavelength of 532 nm, used in commercial ROA spectrometers, the spectrum ofAis enhanced by near‐resonance with the ligand‐field transitions of the complex. The near‐resonance spectrum exhibits many qualitative differences compared with the off‐resonance case, but it remains bi‐signate. Even under full resonance with the ligand‐field electronic transitions, the ROA spectrum ofAremains bi‐signate when the electronic transitions are broadened such as to yield absorption line widths that are comparable with those in the experimental UV‐vis absorption and electronic circular dichroism spectra.more » « less

Abstract The design and synthesis of persistent tetraaryl[4]cumulenes are reported. Derivatives with phenyl endgroups ([4]Phand[4]Ph/Ar*) are susceptible to reactions during synthesis and/or purification that complicate isolation of the desired product, particularly intermolecular dimerization reactions. Incorporation of (3,5‐di‐tert‐butyl)phenyl endgroups (Ar*) provides increased stability, culminating in the stable and isolable [4]cumulene[4]Ar*. Cumulene[4]Ar*remains, however, susceptible to dimerization under pressing conditions, and[4]Ar*also readily reacts with electrophiles under mild conditions that lead to intramolecular cyclization. Given the structural complexity of the side products in these studies (compounds3,10,14,17,18), X‐ray crystallography plays a vital role in their identification.more » « less

Abstract We report the synthesis, X‐ray crystal structure, and molecular recognition properties of pillar[n]arene derivativeP[6]AS, which we refer to as Pillar[6]MaxQ along with analoguesP[5]ASandP[7]AStoward guests1–18. The ultratight binding affinity ofP[5]ASandP[6]AStoward quaternary (di)ammonium ions renders them prime candidates for in vitro and in vivo non‐covalent bioconjugation, for imaging and delivery applications, and as in vivo sequestration agents.more » « less
