Title: Implementation of simultaneous ultraviolet/visible and x-ray absorption spectroscopy with microfluidics
X-ray spectroscopies are uniquely poised to describe the geometric and electronic structure of metalloenzyme active sites under a wide variety of sample conditions. UV/Vis (ultraviolet/visible) spectroscopy is a similarly well-established technique that can identify and quantify catalytic intermediates. The work described here reports the first simultaneous collection of full in situ UV/Vis and high-energy resolution fluorescence detected x-ray absorption spectra. Implementation of a fiber optic UV/Vis spectrometer and parabolic mirror setup inside the dual array valence emission spectrometer allowing for simultaneous measurement of microfluidic flow and mixing samples at the Photon-In Photon-Out X-ray Spectroscopy beamline is described, and initial results on ferricyanide and a dilute iron protein are presented. In conjunction with advanced microfluidic mixing techniques, this will allow for the measurement and quantification of highly reactive catalytic intermediates at reaction-relevant temperatures on the millisecond timescale while avoiding potential complications induced by freeze quenching samples.  more » « less

  1. Natural bearing (raw and calcined at 500 °C) and iron-enriched (impregnation and pillaring) montmorillonitic clay samples were prepared. The obtained samples were characterized (X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) and evaluated as catalysts in catalytic wet oxidation of Brilliant Green and Crystal Violet. Experiments were conducted in the same conditions (0.5 g catalysts, 300 mL air/min or 0.5 mL H2O2, 25 mL of dye solution, 25 °C, initial solution pH = 6.0, for 3 h) in thermostated batch reaction tubes. Process evolution was followed using UV-Vis spectrometry (200–1100 cm−1) and total organic carbon. Dye removal efficiencies (decolorization) between 98 and 99% were determined, while total organic carbon removal efficiencies were calculated to be in the 53–98% range. Iron leakage investigation showed that iron is lost in higher amounts for the catalysts prepared using the impregnation method by comparison with the pillared sample.

  2. Experimental benchmarking of transport coefficients under extreme conditions is required for validation of differing theoretical models. To date, measurement of transport properties of dynamically compressed samples remains a challenge with only a limited number of studies able to quantify transport in high pressure and temperature matter. x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy utilizes coherent x-ray sources to measure time correlations of density fluctuations, thus providing measurements of length and timescale-dependent transport properties. Here, we present a first-of-a-kind experiment to conduct x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy in laser shock compression experiments. We report measurement of the turbulent velocity in the wake of a laser driven supersonic shock and place an upper bound on thermal diffusivity in a solid density plasma on nanosecond timescales.

  3. This paper investigates the optoelectronic properties of CsPbBr3, a lead-based perovskite, and Cs2AgBiBr6, a lead-free double perovskite, in composite thick films synthesized using mechanochemical and hot press methods, with poly(butyl methacrylate) as the matrix. Comprehensive characterization was conducted, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), and photoluminescence (PL). Results indicate that the polymer matrix does not significantly impact the crystalline structure of the perovskites but has a direct impact on the grain size and surface area, enhancing the interfacial charge transfer of the composites. Optical characterization indicates minimal changes in bandgap energies across all different phases, with CsPbBr3 exhibiting higher photocurrent than Cs2AgBiBr6. This is attributed to the CsPbBr3 superior charge carrier mobility. Both composites showed photoconductive behavior, with Cs2AgBiBr6 also demonstrating higher-energy (X-ray) photon detection. These findings highlight the potential of both materials for advanced photodetector applications, with Cs2AgBiBr6 offering an environmentally Pb-free alternative.

  4. Abstract Most commercial systems for ultraviolet-visible (UV–VIS), Fourier-transform infrared, circular dichroism (CD), and fluorescence spectroscopies are designed for measurement of liquid samples. Moreover, adapters enabling the measurement of solid samples are expensive or unavailable for most commercial instruments. Consequently, there is a significant need for solid sample adapters that enable measurement of both liquid and solid samples with a single system. Here, we report two versions of a solid sample adapter cuvette that can be used in most commercial spectroscopy instruments designed for transmission measurement of liquid samples. One version is designed for techniques that do not require changing the sample orientation, and the other allows easy sample rotation. We successfully fabricated these cuvettes by 3D printing with both fused deposition modeling and stereolithography and demonstrated how they enable us to study the optical properties of macroscopic films of aligned carbon nanotubes by performing UV–VIS and CD spectroscopy measurements with the cuvettes. These 3D printed cuvettes and their implementation will help enable a wide range of experiments at a low cost.

  5. Dark photons that are sufficiently light and/or weakly interacting represent a compelling vision of dark matter. Dark photon decay into three photons, which we call the dark photon trident, can be the dominant channel when the dark photon mass falls below the electron pair threshold and can produce a significant flux of x rays. We use 16 years of data from Interrnational Gamma-Ray Astro Physics Laboratory (INTEGRAL)/Spectrometer of INTEGRAL (SPI) to constrain sub-MeV dark photon decay, producing new worlds-best constraints on the kinetic mixing parameter for dark photon masses between 90 and 1022 keV, and comment on the potential for future x-ray observatories to discover the trident decay process.
